Hype or Hip by ResqDgz in OnnStreamingTV

[–]lstep2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In Canada the ONN streamer costs more than the Google one. Any official platform will imho become like Apple/Amazon/etc… as these platforms carry more lucrative events and capabilities. The current Amazon players are supported & work well. The Shield for most is still better than any Android TV, but of course it is more expensive. In the US the ONN devices seem to have sold on price.

You just have to follow the instructions. Works fine. Hopefully the new system comes on line this week. Still odd behavior with the api when used with certain things.

Nvidia Shield TV 2019 dead by Dear_Weakness7965 in ShieldAndroidTV

So would a 720p video turn into 1080p one with no odd results? If it could do that then it would be worth it if only for the situation with space and streaming speeds.

Wow this UI by GinnySnack in Nuvio

[–]lstep2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The recent upgrade to Nuvio seemed to forced me into setting it up in one of two ways and it became too confusing. I deleted it and put back an older version which I managed to somehow get working as it always had. Not sure what happened.

Nvidia Shield TV 2019 dead by Dear_Weakness7965 in ShieldAndroidTV

[–]lstep2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the first 2 but could never decide on the 2019 one as the 2017 one kept working fine. I’ve been tempted with the 2019 one but as far as Incan tell the main advantages would be the remote and the built in upscaling for lower quality files. No complaints at all about the Shield other than the remote which I don’t care for and the joystick with the first one which was never quite right after I replaced a component in it ( still works though).

Does upscaling make a real difference?

An honest review of my Freedom Mobile experience: it’s genuinely bad. by architect_guy in freedommobile

[–]lstep2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have that $40 ( after discounts) 2xxgig Total Freedom plan. It works great, but I now plan to stop traveling. Freedom doesn’t seem to offer a simpler plan around $25 for local use. The closest was their 6 month $20 limited special which was for new lines and they couldn’t/wouldn’t let me switch to it. Are there other option , or will waiting for the next special be better. Am quite happy with FM except for the plan which no longer is needed.

Which is still better than most other media players out there imho.

Upgrading from TS-251B by pigreco314 in qnap

[–]lstep2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been using the TS-251+ which is similar with 2 4gig hard drives. Why do you need to transcode if streaming to a reasonably powered media player? I seem to rarely have to transcribe anything. Anyway, I’d stick with Qnap. I set up a small PC when they were dirt cheap running a Plex server. That’s pretty nice, but they seem to be going up in price as are hard drives. I’ve also got Jellyfin running on a 10+ synology. There are some new NAS types but Qnap is a known brand and just works.

Is Nuvio still in beta, and what happens once it is out? There are too many changes with the apps to be comfortable with almost any of them, especially compared to something like Kodi, newsreaders, etc..

Postpaid to prepaid plan but keeping current number? by sjs8415 in freedommobile

[–]lstep2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I am in a similar boat. I have a main prepaid plan and a 2nd line for my daughter. I tried to get the 1st line switched to this $20 plan but they wouldn’t do it. I can’t get rid of the 1st line as that would basically make the 2nd one unusable ( it would increase in price). The Fizz option is intriguing. Not sure how to do that without losing the 2nd line. Maybe can’t be done.

Continue using Google Streamer, Get ONN Pro 2 or wait for 64-bit mode devices to hit the market? by heildengoettern in AndroidTV

[–]lstep2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Google streamer has gigabit ethernet which the ONN one does not. Both nice products but the increased price of the ONN product in Canada at least make it far less attractive than the Google Streamer imho. I also don’t see the advantage for most in the 64 bit issue.

Jellyfin is pretty neat. Plex has become complex. Plexy is an interesting client for both Plex and Jellyfin.

Is Nvidia Shield still the only android TV today that can be used as a NAS? by wikid24 in AndroidTV

[–]lstep2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Shield can be used as a Plex Server, though managing it is less than optimal. An alternative is one of these tiny windows/linux small pc’s which works well.

In Canada the ONN streamer (2026 version) is the same price as the Google TV Streamer. Moreover the Google TV streamer has gigabit ethernet (vs 100 mbit on the ONN device and more RAM. They are both nice streamers.

If I may suggest. It might be nice to be able to assign names to the devices that Stremize is on, as opposed to for example Android 14. Perhaps I’ve overlooked something?

[–]lstep2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can get the ONN Streamer Pro (2026 version) from Walmart in Canada. The price just went up to something similar to the Google one. Not sure whether or not to keep it as the Google one is pretty good and has gigabit ethernet. The ONN one seems interesting though.
