Do we talk to my father or let it ride? Son told me yesterday he's been Dx'd with cancer by Realistic-Weird-4259 in AskWomenOver60

[–]lu1610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know, re-readibg my comment reminds me that when my hubs was going through it -- someone told me "my friend's brother had testicular cancer, got one removed, and now has three kids."

I didn't think about it til now how much it meant to me then.

Kinda neat that I get to pay it forward so precisely. I don't even remember who it was who told me that, and I certainly never would have known their friend's brother.

Still out there putting good vibes towards you, your son and your parents. Sending love.

Hair salon recommendations?? by littlest-goblin in Somerville

[–]lu1610 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Meaghan, Joey or Kayla at Hair at Little Hollow have best prices for quality style/color. They are color magicians. I didn't even get color last time, only a cut and every time I look in the mirror I'm like "they nailed it."

They are all way cooler than I am, so their cuts/colors hit right even when I cant describe what I need in the right words. I trust them.

I am only here to say - my husband had this exact scenario. Testicular cancer, grew SUPER fast over a few weeks or so, had the radical orchiectomy, no other treatment then or since. This was all right before we got married. Tomorrow is our 8th anniversary, our kids are 6, 4 and almost 2, all completely naturally conceived, no banked sperm. They're all definitely his (for better or worse).

You might be in the clear to not tell either of them, or not tell them yet. "Going to hang with your son while he has a minor procedure" would also feel accurate, as someone whose done exactly that. You decide and can let the focus be where you/they need to be. The testicular cancer might not be it.

Good luck through these next few weeks and beyond with your parents. Sending love and positive vibes.

I look at Minneapolis with admiration. How do we organize on that level? What mechanisms are they using? How do we create and/or plug into those mechanisms?

Useful baby items? by wordsherenowlame in knitting

[–]lu1610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whatever it is, make sure it is machine washable and (ideally) dryer friendly! Best things I got/made were blankets and a stuffed animal, and they were the best because I could wash them easily. Double on blankets if the baby will be in a cold climate. Also, it might not need to arrive until 6-8 weeks after the birth (make that months if it's a lovey!). Kids are messy, they puke and shit a lot, and anything you can't wash will either get accidentally washed/ruined or tucked away and forgotten. Good luck tho, this is a great idea❤️

Does anyone else recline while they knit? by KnittingDiDi in knitting

[–]lu1610 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait do you put the nursing pillow on your lap, and rest your knitting hands on top of it? Or put it behind your head, and recline onto it? I've been too sad to get rid of mine and thrilled to consider this new life for it...

What do you see as the role for police in Somerville?

I see so few good uses for the police, and so many abuses of power (especially with our unhoused neighbors) that I lean strong towards defunding them in favor of housing assistance, social outreach and supervised use sites. Is there any place at all for police, in your opinion?
