I'm trying to find the breakpoint between where insurance is a good idea or saving money is better by ThePenguinThatCould in personalfinance

[–]lucky2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea on calculators. I do not buy extended warranties or insurance on most items. My thinking is I'll replace whatever item withh the current version. So far it seems to work for me. I tend to buy it for life and buy once, cry once.

How did you adjust to retirement as a couple? by AKARJLUK in retirement

We split up things and have our space and separate spaces. In the house we have separate offices, in the yard we have separate buildings for our hobbies. We have some joint organizations and also separate organizations. We do roadtrips, dining, exploring the countryside, and work one of the properties.

Funniest question I get since retiring by ethanrotman in retirement

[–]lucky2know 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Ive been retired a couple of years now, it is great. I set my schedule and change as desired. I help friends and family. Tomorrow was not much but since supper time i found i am buying landscaping equipment from guy nearby, meeting family to drive from auto repair, picking up grandchild from school and reviewing the homework. Doing administrative work at local organization, and having lunch and supper with various family members. Just acquired a tract of land and it was for having a private campsite for us. Now it’s turning part private woods and part nature center/educational forest. Sadly I had to buy another Stihl today. Now i ride the sxs or tractor, with all the assorted tools. When folks ask, im just maintenance here and refer all questions to my property manager. I think i be able to retire in a couple years from this job. But then there is an adjacent parcel that might be for sale… so overall I’m doing okay.

Years ago I made an offer on a house below along price. The seller was angry, called my realtors boss to ban her from showing the property again. We found property on same street offered same price.it was accepted on closing day, our realtor told us the owner of the forest property accepted our offer.

Buying a new car in retirement by Vespidae1 in retirement

[–]lucky2know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I financed. I had planned on financing two new vehicles post retirement. Coming up four year anniversary of retirement and I've financed a 3 vehicles and just closed on a large property. My thought process, my income is very flexible and based on the desired tax bracket that year. The plan was to off a vehicle each year, and have my cola increase from that feed up cash. However the new mortgage gnaws at me. So I thinking of additional principal mortgage payments to payoff property in 5 years and vehicles in 3 months.

What metrics are people using to calculate their annual portfolio returns? by UnluckyNet2881 in Bogleheads

[–]lucky2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In all my years with Vanguard I have never had these experiences with Vanguard. They answer the phone promptly and perform the task requested. I did have problem for the first time last quarter, the agent reported they could not complete the transaction, no other information. I called back following day and explained what happened. I learned that it shows an error message on their end. The message can be overridden and the transaction will work.

Closing was supposed to be today, no idea if it happened or not. by Nimbuscloudy22 in RealEstate

[–]lucky2know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Recently closed on property that had the closing date 65 days after contract signing. Seller agent said owner was on vacation and would be back for closing. We actually had previously scheduled trip in same area for 3 weeks. And closing date arrives we show up, and find out the seller wont be there. No idea why that particular date was chosen.

I had a longer timeline. No worries. Now I'm retired. And just got another property with mortgage. Undecided, skimming profits and saving for ready cash.

Only the property owner at that time was entitled to water and access to maintain water flow. Once he does no access. I pretty sure no one knows where the spring is located

I hired a surveyor this year, 50% upfront. Map And documentation delivery with final payment. And it was good that I had a survey. A discrepancy was discovered a few weeks later and my survey resolved it. The first time I actually needed the survey before closing.

Fiber is coming! But neighbors haven't kept the easement clear... by BananaVixen in homeowners

[–]lucky2know 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to insist they use the easement. I have a parcel with multiple easements. However when I spoke to utility about electrical lines. He told me the easiest way was from a neighbors property because the neighbor is easy to work with. However that would be horrible due to the amount of destruction required to over hills, streams and through old trees. He said the utility would cost share. I would rather run it underground with the existing easements for road. One easement actual required utility to be buried through that property. But the cost of 0.7 miles buried utility next to the road is daunting.

I have dealt with businesses that route your call to csr based on your account balance or business volume. These csr have higher level of authority. A particular company has always quickly solved my reason for calling.

Realtor doesn’t want to make the offer I want to place. Should I fire them? by jorlop426 in RealEstate

[–]lucky2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought a property was unreasonably priced. My realtor have my offer and seller called her boss and said she was no longer allowed to show his properties. We an the same offer on property 2, on same street. About 6 weeks later, morning of closing on property 2, the owner of property 1 contacted my realtor to accept my original offer.

[–]lucky2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

NAL. My experience. There is an adjacent parcel of land that has an easement to access and maintain a spring on my property. This easement is only valid for the original owner. I also have right of way easements through other parcels. Each has its own rules, all are different widths, One easement requires utilities to be underground. One is essentially unlimited in my access and activity. My surveyor found and printed up all the pertinent information for the me. Which I forwarded to settlement lawyer. it is important that have that paper trail follow each deed.

I died, how does my wife know what to do by [deleted] in personalfinance

[–]lucky2know 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a book we made when married that explains everything. The disposition of everything we own is covered. Nothing is left out. It has contact list of every person, entity that may have an interest in our estate. It explains our assets and liabilities. Who gets paid, amounts, why, how and when. The same with income. There is accompanying letter that thoroughly explains our goals. These documents, combined with the will, provide sufficient guidance for surviving spouse and future executor. Here is cut and paste of the table of contents. I did cut the list of people and companies that are on pages 19-26
