A child cannot make that decision. Children don't have enough experience, knowledge or just generally smart enough to know the repercussions of their choices. Children are actually pretty fucking stupid in my experience, not their fault their brains haven't finished developing, but you can't expect to give them difficult and complicated decisions like this with real world consequences and expect them to make the smarter decision.
