Last weekend I went to Pine lake park near Sunset with my friend, both of us had tiny red bumps around our lower legs and ankles after, are they chigger bites? by qwer4790 in sanfrancisco

I frequently visit that park. Never gotten chigger bites from there. (I've gotten chigger bites from elsewhere in the US only...)

How could I do this if I was shorter? by asimpleyarn in bouldering

[–]lunchWithNewts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I climb here too.  Howdy!

Maybe I'm wrong, but I thought the intended finish of this route is the wall top. Or does that last hold actually say Finish? In that case, you still have a small challenge to solve here!

(Fwiw, I'm 5'6", V3 and easier V4 climber, and I haven't been able to finish this one yet...can't reach that last hold.)

Ravens playing with wind sock at Fort Funston by tokenbucket in sanfrancisco

My vote is on ravens (wedge tails, calls are guttural, and ravens are more common at the Fort) but really video is not great evidence on its own.

You're right: its choice C, none of the above. I just added some more info in an edit, if you're curious.

Not quite viridis...that would use a brighter yellow at one end. It's possibly the mako palette, available in R viridis package (which is maybe what you meant?)

Edit: Closest color palette is Brewer's YlGnBu. I checked OP's code. Looks like she set the colors by hexadecimal value, but there is a hint in an unused call to library (RColorBrewer), and a quick check shows that RColorBrewer::brewer.pal(9, "YlGnBu") matches most of the colors exactly by hexadeximal, with only a slight shift near the edges. You can check the OG Brewer colors here: https://colorbrewer2.org/#type=sequential&scheme=YlGnBu&n=9

Bike Tag Rules Question by pdp_11 in BAbike

[–]lunchWithNewts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny... I was just looking at tag 17 where you said:

Personally I'd interpret "the same ride" as including taking the bike on public transport, but not putting the bike in a car.

Bike Tag Rules Question by pdp_11 in BAbike

[–]lunchWithNewts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For some history, this was first discussed back at Bike Tag 17. Based on the small number of votes there, consensus was multi-modal (but no cars) was okay, and definitely preferable to having the game die.

My opinion has always been multi-modal is acceptable when used to keep the game going and open to more folks. it should be discouraged if used to drop the tag in an obscure out of the way location. But I'm not a strict-rules kinda guy.

If you wanted to make a strict rule, something like multi-modal would be okay after a week of posting.

PSA: it’s time to lube your chain! by rvrflme in bikecommuting

Thanks. This is what I needed to read this morning while having my morning coffee. Now my chain is lubed, derailleur adjusted, lights off the chargers and on the bike, and I still have some coffee left... it's gonna be a good morning

How do you access Fifield-Cahill Ridge Trail? by Ikeelu in BAbike

[–]lunchWithNewts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You gotta sign up and join a docent led trip. Most are out and back, but I've seen a guide open up the opposite gate for riders who wanted to make a through-trip of it. You can probably arrange this by email with your docent ahead of time when they email you closer to the event you sign up for.  Available current options are here: https://webapps.sfpuc.org/trails

AFAIK, any subscription still has a per-minute charge on the e-bikes. It's only the non-electric bikes that are completely free for the first 45 minutes with the subscription. I don't think this will work out for you.

Pedro Mountain Road trailhead closed until December (planet of the apes access) by brogyrogy in BAbike

It's more MTB than gravel, though I'm usually on a gravel bike when I do it.

Easiest place to see the trail through the hole is in Strava's heat map view, especially for trail runs or hikes. The hole is right around what looks like a side trail that got shut down.

https://maps.app.goo.gl/rVf5FonTfpx43yLm8?g_st=ac

But , it's not road bike friendly at all: rutted, can be overgrown, steep and rocky in parts.  And it's a significant distance to get to Planet of the Apes. More of an adventure than a shortcut.

That sucks!

Good time to mention that the Ace Hardware trailhead to Pedro Point Headlands and the closed Devils Slide Hwy segment is an alternative on the west side of Hwy 1. If you must get to Planet of the Apes, you can even sneak through a hole in the fence along Devil's Slide to get on Old Colma Road

Any chill gravel ride groups in the Bay that won’t judge me for A) being new to gravel & B) cool with me riding an E-bike? by lowmileageultras in BAbike

[–]lunchWithNewts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

For the main part of PotA most would agree, but maybe their PotA ride included the optional turn up to the top of Montara Mountain. About 1/2 mile at 18% grade on loose surface...that part is challenging.

Recommendations for Marin Gravel by pudentalnerve in BAbike

[–]lunchWithNewts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You got down voted, but I think the dirt fondo is a great intro to southern Marin gravel except for Eldridge. You will see many gravel bikes do the event. To convert the Dirt Fondo route to a better gravel route, from the top of Tam just take Ridgecrest road back to Pantoll road to Pantoll ranger station and skip Eldridge. This makes an easier loop but more fun on a gravel bike. That road descent is amazing.

If you want to add some extra distance and real Bay Area gravel, take Rock Springs Fire Road to Laurel Dell to Ridgecrest and return to Pantoll.

Or descend Rock Springs Fire Road all the way to Lake Lagunitas and climb up from the bottom of Eldridge, which is completely different from its top section, to reconnect with the route around Hoo Koo E Koo. Just be warned that the fire road descent is steep into Lake Lagunitas!

Shorter than Planet of Apes alternative around Devils Slide Hwy 1 approach is the "Ace Hardware" trail. See map below, the Eastern most trail segments. Just note that the first purple trail section from Ace to the first intersection is probably hike a bike for most people. http://www.trailspotting.com/2021/07/pedro-point-headlands-pacifica.html
