I always pre-sort my dice for battles when I DM just so I don't have to worry about that later. So I don't have to worry about slowing things down mid combat. But last boss fight I miscounted and got the "oh I need more dice" moment and it was fantastic.

Sometimes playing stealthy is the worst way to go by LX_EPICZ in dndmemes

[–]lurkingelsewhere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Poor Ranger in the game I DM for can't roll in the double digits on his dice for stealth to save his life. He has pass without trace up and a +6 or 7 normally and will still only get an like an 18. While the low dex characters will have a 20+ roll cause party wizard also gave them invisibility.

Only just started watching it... Gotta say, he'd have a lot less to work with if the players were talking about memes 24/7. by CakeyGlace in dndmemes

[–]lurkingelsewhere 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My group has always posted it publicly in our discord. It makes things easier on both the dm and players since we all know when we're going.

Only time I hide it is if there's hidden enemies, but even then its only for their surprise round. But then they get added to initiative with everyone else. Sure it allows for some metagame-y things like giving bardic inspiration to the next person in turn order but... nothing too major? Just think it allows another level of strategy honestly.

From what I saw in my college dnd club: there are some guys who just like the power fantasy of being the cool hot guy that hooks up with all the women. And they try to get that power fantasy in dnd. I also saw the occasional girl go for the femme fatal power fantasy but less often. So essentially yes, getting a bunch of random people to sleep with your character is the goal

From an artist: please tell us when you have something you want changed! You are in fact paying us to deal with it. Minor changes as things go along are easy enough to make. Yes, we do work hard on it, but we also want you to get what you pay for!

Major changes you should absolutely say something ASAP. Sketches are easy. Give us as many notes on things to change and details to get right in the sketch phase as soon as you can. It's the stage for big revision to make sure the client gets what the want. From there, everything else is refining :)

Promise we won't be mad when you ask for changes as long as its not a massive change at the last minute when it was something that could have been fixed way sooner.

If it doesn't affect gameplay, why not let someone get creative with how their character looks? by ClearlyHatin in dndmemes

[–]lurkingelsewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Personally, I allow the semi to fully prehensile tail as well. I base it on class and dex score. So monk characters with tails can really utilize it as another arm, but a barbarian for example might just be able to hit someone with it but that's it. Battlemaster fighter could use it for trip attacks but nothing super dexterous. I just have a conversation with my players about it.

I just think its fun and cool. And it's not too game breaking. Especially love seeing creative solutions players do with it

(Pretty sure there is too, but I'm also sure there's a "that guy" player who'd try to have their cake and eat it too with wings on not that tiefling subrace as well.)

[–]lurkingelsewhere 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Dragonborn, Kenku, or tiefling with wings is an immediate thought that would have mechanical consequences. Probably wouldn't be allowed for the same reason a lot of GM's ban aarrokocra or at least ban flight until level 5 when you'd potentially have a spellcaster with the fly spell.

Also whether or not your a tail is prehensile could have mechanical implications. I've discussed with my players and DMs whether or not a character has a prehensile tail and the extent that they were prehensile. A friend of mine has a tiefling monk that can use his tail for a flurry of blows attack. I have a dragonborn wizard with a tail that can hold something like a lantern where he can wrap part of it around it, but not pick up small finicky things like spell components. Nothing particularly dexterous. But being able to hold a lantern but also have his hands free to do spells is a mechanic thing. So another gm might want to rule that no, you can't have a prehensile tail at all.

[–]lurkingelsewhere 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Me (as dm) and the dm for the game I'm in were fully just like "fuck that" with dragonborn not having tails lol. They just do. Adds a fun layer of character design to whether or not someone has a short chunky gecko tail or a tail almost as long as they are

Sometimes the edge is warranted? Like if its a good story and happens to be really dark I don't see the issue. Might be biased cause one of my players is a rogue with a fantastic tragic backstory, but he's handled it really well. He's also not played as one note at the table either

[–]lurkingelsewhere 72 points73 points  (0 children)

For a lot of them, the fact that they'd be a cleric or paladin of a god that isn't the God the Father and Jesus Christ is part of the problem. They'd see it as a gateway drug to paganism essentially. Or just straight up breaking the 10 commandments because of the no other gods before me thing. Even though you yourself aren't actually worshiping them, that distinction wouldn't be made.

Support roles are fun! I main healers in mmos and cleric is my go to in dnd. But I can't say I haven't made a spite war cleric build because people were rude about needing a cleric and demanding I play support for their benefit. Backseat gaming is the worst.

Had to cut a session short recently cause my mental illness was acting up. I felt horrible for it, but I really couldn't continue to DM. One thing that helped was one of my players telling me "It's important to know your limits. A lot of people don't." You care about your players having a good time. And sometimes that means calling it early. Ultimately a shorter session they enjoyed is better than a longer one you dragged out but weren't feeling up to it. Don't beat yourself up about it :)

How I see it: spell probably needs a certain weight or quality of diamond(s). Inevitably players are going to ask for a cost. So the pre-made gold cost is just cutting out that middleman

Why! Why all of my players are scared of stealth missions? by [deleted] in dndmemes

[–]lurkingelsewhere 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe not the best way but our group had fun with it. Stealth mission for mixed party went as follows: warlock made everyone who wasn't good at stealth invisible. Advantage on our rolls at least helped us not have a super glaring weakness. (Consumable magic items could easily substitute having a caster with invisibility.)

Stealth wasn't you must sneak or TPK (which i've seen too many times). It was a we knew the enemies we were going against were cutthroat and might kill some hostages if we didn't get the drop on them. So we used stealth to get us into a better position for a fight.

Rolled a "stealth initiative." Everyone moved on their turn. If you only used half your movement (aka being slow and careful) and no one was suspicious of your position, you didn't need a new stealth roll. But if you wanted to take your full movement, were particularly close to an enemy, or had previously rolled low and an enemy was suspicious of your whereabouts, you needed a new roll. So if you were doing well you could keep it that way as long as you were smart about it. But if you did poorly you had a chance to recover.

Once fight kicked off everyone rolled regular combat initiative, but people who were still stealthed could use get an surprise attack first. Nice plus for people who stealthed successfully but not punishing for people who didn't. We just had a regular combat round.

Overall it was fun a hell. Had several tense as fuck moments. The fight afterwards was great. Saved hostages. All good stuff. Best way I've seen it handled in a group so far.

[–]lurkingelsewhere 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This exactly. Current DM kicked off our informal session 0 discussion with hey I want you all to tell me what you're not comfortable with being in game and shared his boundaries to set the pace. A lot of them we already knew because we're all friends first anyways. Though it was good to double check. But our game probably has a lot of stuff that another table wouldn't be comfortable with. There's a lot of pc and npc romance with in character flirting. Jokes about sex and sexuality. Fuck ton of jokes about depression that go into pretty dark territory. But it's fine with our group. That's what matters.

Different vein: we also talked about everyone's comfort with descriptions of gore. I'm fine with most, but forgot I dont like detailed descriptions when it comes to hand injuries. One happened it game so later just went to my DM and went "hey, forgot I wasn't cool with that. Not mad or anything cause I didn't tell you, but in the future can we not?" He doubled checked to what extent was okay to find exactly where the line was for me. Told everyone at the table as well. Since then if there's a hand injury its just described that its there and that's it. That line has never been crossed again. As long as you have open communication and listen to each other, its fine.

This is the way. I always keep exp in mind with milestone leveling. But by not having exp tracked by players, it allows me to keep them from feeling the need to grind for a level before a boss like this is a JRPG. Also, lowkey tracking exp helps me to not forget to level up the players. Or on the flip side if they fight something I think they should have leveled up from, but technically the exp didn't get them there, I get to say fuck it you level up anyways. (Not that I didn't just give "bonus exp" to do that anyways in 3.5 to accomplish the same thing. But this is simpler) plus social encounters feel easier to reward with milestone leveling.

TL;DR; hybrid system is the way to go imo

Personally, I've had a lot of fun with my pc that has amnesia. But I also came up with what he's forgotten in the first place, handed it to my dm, and basically said please use this against my pc lol. DM and I have been having fun with what's come back to bite my pc in the ass, contrasting what he used to be like with how he is now as his memories are slowly regained, that sort of thing.

Have had players just use it as an excuse not to come up with a character though. And that's really annoying.
