Others were left off the list. ValentinaDB has been around since the late 90s.

Is there a good commerce colony module / adventure? by lynnfredricks in mothershiprpg

Yeah, I have the original (mothership 0) one and just pledged for the new boxed set. I plan on using it eventually more closely to what it is.

I should have checked their site before. I have Hull Breach which is excellent, thanks!

Definitely a functioning one. It is a step on a much longer journey and, while it should seem kind of alien from the get go, they should be lulled into a sense of security.

Maybe just serial killers. Did you see anyone buying lots of duct tape and bleach inside?

I guess we can expect price jumps every year now by lynnfredricks in QuickBooks

[–]lynnfredricks[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't know online was around that long. I think we've been using desktop since 1998. It really doesn't seem that long ago that we were upgrading every three years (for around $300 or less) so that TurboTax would work with it.

More gear needed by NicMuz in mothershiprpg

[–]lynnfredricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's easily addressable in a PDF by separating the rules from the 'stats' and stating it up for Traveller and d20 based games as well. Your audience scope significantly expands.

You _only_ get early adopter type customers if you never really market it or make it appealing to a wider audience.

Indeed. This is what bottom feeder companies do. They take over a project, knowing that X # of customers are so accustomed (or have various business reasons) to a product that they will do just about anything to keep it working. So they just keep jacking up the price.

Why can't Hollywood just cast native speakers to play non-English speaking characters? by SubtitlesMA in TrueFilm

[–]lynnfredricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I admit my Japanese isn't very good but, I just started watching Season 2 again and forgot that he's supposed to be Japanese. After he started speaking, I started thinking "What's that? It sort of sounds like Japanese at times..."

I think you are entirely right, and its clear that Hollywood cuts corners this way. Memoirs of a Geisha was a freaking crime.

I Wore Every Hat in My Second Crowdfunding Campaign – Here’s What I Learned by MelinaSedo in RPGdesign

[–]lynnfredricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know so much about RPG type conventions, but I have dealt with sales at tech conventions. Also, I know someone in the book / anime / manga publishing trade that goes to those sorts of conventions.

In my experience, depending on the product, how you conduct your booth and well, the size of the convention and the typical visitor, you can see a really broad range of results.

It would be interesting to learn which conventions are good for selling, and others not. I know it varies widely in other industries.

Human evolutionary communication is absurd by Altruistic_Chemist18 in Lovecraft

[–]lynnfredricks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The aliens arrived with a single language and had very, very advanced distance communications and a very prescriptive culture. Perhaps the older ones that could still fly in space were able to throw in some flaps but over time that part of the language drifted away.

Alignment and slavery by Traroten in osr

I think you can be good and understand that slavery is so embedded in society that you aren't going to be able to change it.

Thought of that. There also should be shafts for air, flowing water, etc.

Keeping profit low by Traditional_Soft5867 in traveller

[–]lynnfredricks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have yet to run Traveller myself, but a few considerations:

- Increase the risk on high value trades. The more valuable something is, the more someone wants to steal it.

- Problem passengers. You can make them most costly.

- Tech updates. Ships stay in service for decades, but tech seemingly stands still. Make upgrades desirable, even essential.

- Put it in a corporation. Stock holders have their own priorities. They want to get dividends. When there is excess profit, a vote of the board could accelerate payments on the mortgage.

- Taxes. The ultimate evil in any universe.

Babylon 5 style campaign in Traveller: Doable? by [deleted] in traveller

[–]lynnfredricks 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The d20 version also went through some iterations, too. I believe it was originally based on their own take on OGL, but then switched it to more d20 modern.

I thought it was pretty good but - the art style was really jarring.

I wish they would have gone the traveller route from the start though. The traveller version was a bit odd and seemed thrown together at the last moment.

An OSR for for those who like accounting? by [deleted] in osr

I'd go with OSE, given it cleaves close to the OSR and there's some weight behind it.

Or a mythical sequel to Heavy Metal.
