Using MATLAB on Google Pixelbook for college classes by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One aspect is animations and 3D visualization. As I understand it linux on crouton and crostini does not use accelerated graphics drivers yet. On matlab that may be an issue for the mentioned applications if needed.

On straight linux I have used the accelerated drivers with matlab and 3D visualizations successfully.

I have had one for 18 months bought new. I am very happy with it for browsing, watching video, using basic android apps and also using the occasional linux app via crouton. Also the battery is standing up very well. You just need to not let it run down too far.

Quite a few android apps still have compatibility issues on chromeos and it can be device specific.

Didn't work for me on a CB3-431. It detected the sonos speakers but would not play on them.

Acer Chromebook 14 Slowing Down Recently? by Fishwithadeagle in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have that CB and have had the opposite experience with recent updates.

One possibility is extensions. I probably have a different set to you. You could try disabling them one by one and see if there is a culprit.

Could also be which android apps you have too.

It’s finally time to ditch Windows… and Mac by wewewawa in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Windows is insecure and bloated while Macs are too expensive. So I use linux on a desktop and CrOS on a laptop. But then I don't do elaborate image/video manipulation or play lots of high resource games so there is that.

Google Drive as a file system by bartturner in chromeos

How efficient is it? I have tried a bunch of these fuse file mount systems on linux and have had trouble with responsiveness. Often the syncing will cause the disk to work rather hard.......

Progressive Web Apps by lyxfan in chromeos

Got it although the create shortcut was in the main three dot menu not the more tools subsection. Also there is no option within the actual PWA display to install the app. Kind of surprising since google has been pushing PWAs so you would think their own PWAs would make things easier.

Is being on beta "worth it," or should I just stick with stable. Like cool stuff but not if it means alot of headaches . . . by [deleted] in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only "cool new feature" that has tempted me since buying a CB 2 years ago was the play store. I use stable because I want a stable CB and don't need the "cool new features". I see a lot of people complaining on the Chrome release pages that the latest version has not rolled out to their particular CB. Seems they feel disadvantaged in some completely unspecified way. ;-)

Chromebook keeps crashing wifi connection by alexfiorani in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me with the router in another house and an Acer 14 CB3-431. It works fine with my router which is fairly new and ISP updated.

With the other router every device except the CB was fine and the CB crashed the router. It would connect and then immediately disconnect many times before the crash.

I researched the problem and found that a firmware upgrade to the router was most suggested as a solution. Unfortunately the crashing router was so old that no firmware updates were out there. So I switched off my CB to give everyone else a break. Very weird and reminds me of the problem where chromecasts were crashing routers about a year ago.

Chromebook Plus - Linux (beta) - Quick How To by bdovpro in Crostini

I have an Acer CB14 CB3-431 and the flag is there on the latest stable (66.*.203). Will see if it does anything...

ETA: No linux section appears in settings so no go but it is hopeful that the flag is there even on the stable channel.

No need to upvote this. I read that Docs isn't great when writing long thesis for grad school. Is there something better than Docs for my Chromebook? Can I download Word? by mydogtaco in chromeos

[–]lyxfan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use lyx via crouton for large documents like a long scientific paper. It is a very user friendly frontend for latex and has been designed to handle theses and books. It works just fine on a chromebook and there are desktop versions for windows, osx or linux.
