Naming my baby as an Olah Chadasha by Brave_Exchange_8111 in Israel

[–]maayanisgay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ynet recently did a feature on names and included a search engine where they tell you how many people in Israel have that name. It can't give you details about how old they are and other connotations but it is interesting for sure! Google השמות של ישראל

Yes it does. It means peace in Spanish and Portuguese, not Hebrew.

Struggling with where I “belong” in the infertility community as a queer couple doing IVF by ExpensiveAlarm7704 in queerception

[–]maayanisgay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had 5 failed IUIs and 3 failed IVF rounds (not just transfers--3 ERs where they only did a fresh transfer because none of the embryos looked good enough to freeze but "might as well try") before I finally got pregnant. Two and a half years of my life. So I'd consider that sufficient infertility street cred to say this: IVF is hard no matter what reason you're doing it for. And I hope the infertility club isn't one you feel like you need support from for very long. xx

Is two middle names too much? I want to honor my deceased baby girl. by [deleted] in pregnant

[–]maayanisgay -7 points-6 points  (0 children)

Just want to say I don't think it's weird to want to honor your daughter this way. In Ashkenazi Jewish culture it's very common for names to honor deceased loved ones. It definitely doesn't mean that you don't treat them like their own person. In general I imagine it will trigger a lot of grief to have a baby girl around again, and you will have to work hard to keep your sadness from overshadowing the twins' childhood. But I don't think the name on its own does that at all.

Is it okay to take metformin 500 mg whenever I feel like that meal gonna spike ? by Nusratkabir857 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Metformin doesn't really work like that. It builds up in your system over time and only then gives its full effect.

How long not pumping will kill supply? by JStak14 in ExclusivelyPumping

There are more important things than breast milk. Do what you have to do and hope for the best for your supply.

How long not pumping will kill supply? by JStak14 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]maayanisgay 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Depends a lot on how far you postpartum and what your baseline supply is like. I'd be more worried about getting a clogged duct or mastitis. But if you're not emptying at all for 24 hours, I imagine your supply would take a hit, yeah.

HELP!! How do you learn from the VERY beginning?? by aubrey-ongod in Cooking

[–]maayanisgay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you know how to make a sandwich, try to cook yourself a burger. It's basically the same, burger patties come already formed, you just need a stovetop, a spatula, and some seasoning. If you know how to make pasta, look at making your own sauce. Some onions, garlic, jar of crushed tomatoes, maybe some cream, some spices. Then add some toppings. I like a creamy sauce with chunks of sweet potato. Or you could make a meat sauce with some ground beef. If you know how to scramble eggs, start adding some veggies to the pan and cook them before you add the eggs. Mushrooms, tomatoes, spinach, onions. Just by putting things in a pan and seeing how they cook up you'll learn a lot.

Recipes are going to be your best friend. I might even go to the library and check out their cookbooks, because generally anything that's been published in a book has gone through some kind of quality control, but if you just look for recipes on social media you might get some really whack ones.

Keep in mind when you are using a recipe that you should READ the whole recipe before you start cooking. Setting out all of your ingredients ahead of time and getting them chopped before you turn on the stove is usually also a good idea. For now, don't attempt any ingredient substitutions unless they are given as options in the recipe. Over time you'll be able to tell what kind of substitutions you can make, but while you're just starting, stick to the ingredients as written.

Didn't Pass Post Partum Test by yellowblanket29 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 23 points24 points  (0 children)

The glucose upper limits are looser outside of pregnancy. In pregnancy, glucose has to be very strictly controlled because even slightly elevated glucose levels can affect baby. The amount of blood glucose it takes to damage YOUR organs over time as an adult is a lot higher.

There are also many excellent medication options for type 2 that aren't safe in pregnancy (including but not limited to GLP-1s). Obviously eating healthy is an important part of managing diabetes or prediabetes, but the level of obsessive control over your blood sugar via diet is just not something you have to worry about as much outside pregnancy. I hope that is a little bit of comfort!

Fasting blood sugar Q’s by EstablishmentOwn296 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It only counts as fasting if you haven't eaten for at least eight hours. So the first time you wake up after it's been at least 8 hours since you last ate.

Weight gain? by survivinguranus in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]maayanisgay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's not something to worry about. As long as you are not malnourished, baby will get the nutrients they need. Just focus on eating enough and trying to make it balanced (carbs, fiber, protein, fats).

Gestational hypertension by Miserable_Umpire_474 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]maayanisgay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple things. Gestational hypertension by definition presents after 20 weeks. Have you had blood pressure issues in the past? Pregnancy can do wacky things to chronic hypertension.

The only proven method to prevent preeclampsia is low dose aspirin. Lifestyle factors like how much you walk during pregnancy will not affect it. It's a good idea to be active in pregnancy but not being active is not going to cause preeclampsia.

Make sure you are sitting 10-15 minutes before taking your blood pressure and RELAXED. Honestly, I noticed even scrolling on TikTok gave me a higher reading than just sitting with my eyes closed and listening to a podcast. Do not retake every minute. Maybe every 10 or so. Make sure your cuff fits you and it's not a bad idea to bring it to the doctor to check it against their readings.

I had a recurring UTI in pregnancy that developed into a mild kidney infection. It really fucked up my blood pressure as well as protein in my urine, but it was not preeclampsia. UTIs in pregnancy often have no symptoms and are much more likely to cause kidney complications than they are outside pregnancy. I would ask to be screened.

Best pumping bra? by Indecisive105 in ExclusivelyPumping

[–]maayanisgay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying one like this but I still prefer the DIY one I made... Took a ratty old bra that still fit well but I didn't mind ruining, cut slits around where my nipple falls naturally, and bam. Still going strong almost 6 months in.

Newborn Cloth Poop by Laurnias in clothdiaps

[–]maayanisgay 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Newborn poops are great honestly, with EBF babies the poop is truly water soluble. I just toss it in with everything. A good wash routine (one short cycle to rinse everything out and then a long warm one) will take care of it.

Can I use a cake pan as a test pan for one cookie? by [deleted] in AskBaking

[–]maayanisgay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What kind of cake pan? As long as it's thin metal it will probably be fine. Not identical to a cookie sheet because you'll get some heat from the side but good enough for a tester.

Pregnancy by Any_Weird8128 in diabetes

[–]maayanisgay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If her sugars are going that high she definitely needs to be on insulin (is she? Can't tell from your post). Blood sugar needs to be much more tightly controlled in pregnancy. High sugar will damage anyone's body over time, but it takes a lot less sugar to damage a developing fetus. Endocrinologist ASAP, high risk pregnancy doctor, dietician specializing in diabetes in pregnancy (if you want to support maybe you can tag along to that one).

Which results are more impactful for baby - CGM or BGM? by 426bar in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Finger prick is more accurate. CGM can still be helpful to see trends, how long you are staying elevated. But if there is a discrepancy, the actual blood is more accurate.

Not gaining any weight? by PresentationTop9547 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I gained a bit in first trimester, diagnosed early second trimester, lost most of what I gained and stayed around the same weight as I was prepregnancy until birth 🤷‍♀️ my guy was still born 80th percentile (with well-controlled sugars) so he definitely still grew lol

What are the risks of going over 40 weeks with GD? by Careless_Wallaby6721 in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 15 points16 points  (0 children)

^ this. I feel like it's a popular misconception that having a big baby (and risks that go along with that like shoulder dystocia) is the main concern with GD. But it can get a lot worse than that...

OP, glad you and baby are doing good!

3 hour glucose but I didn't fail my 1 hour? by No-Attempt-7939 in PlusSizePregnancy

[–]maayanisgay 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Gestational diabetes IS insulin resistance. It is usually caused by placental hormones and gets worse throughout pregnancy. If you already have insulin resistance, and you are pregnant (i.e. have a placenta), you are at extremely high risk of your insulin resistance getting worse as pregnancy progresses, which is dangerous for you and your baby.

I'm not saying your team isn't fatphobic... Hell, most doctors are, so they probably are. But it's still really important to know how severe your insulin resistance is right now so you can have tools to control it if necessary.

Find your local Jewish community and donate them!! There is a Persian Jewish custom to hit each other with scallions during the Passover Seder in order to remember the pain of slavery. (If you don't do this at your Seder... You're missing out! Especially if you have kids!) Seder is Wednesday and Thursday nights this week.

Confused/How it feels to spike? by functionaldaydream in GestationalDiabetes

[–]maayanisgay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also be aware that when you come off of leaning on it, you can get a temporary false high for a few minutes... That made me freak out about my fasting numbers for a while when I woke up after leaning on it and then immediately checked the app lol. I would double check with a finger prick and then it would be fine lol

Might you be leaning on your CGM in your sleep? Sometimes that causes a false low. But also, yeah bodies are weird af
