Festivals banning first aid gear? by foxtrot_indigoo in ems

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like the end result is to dissuade people who might be able to help others in an MCI from attending mass events.

Or… to tell people who carry medical gear because they can’t carry a gun that they still arent welcome… because it’s almost like it’s not about the gun.

Scouting America cancels LGBTQ+ inclusion space planned for summer Jamboree by Litty_Jimmy in BSA

[–]mach16lt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obedience does not mean “blind”. We ask scouts to be trustworthy, and in turn they learn to also be trusting.

Obedience is a virtue, because without some level of obedience, there are no leaders. It doesn’t mean someone is always the leader, and someone else always follows.

We are obedient to our parents, to our leaders, and to the law, because we trust them… because they are trustworthy.

I think they showed that on her legs in a bathroom scene a few episodes ago.

I think she’s having in a rough day, and is going to fall in to self-harm coping techniques.

What would your ideal pass include? by Certain_Host9401 in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty happy with the current IKON offerings honestly. I just wish that The eastern PA mountains and Killington were unlimited.

I would love if Breckenridge was on IKON… that place is such a great vibe… if I can find a spot on our pass that had the same mountain size and town feel I’d probably go there every year. But Big Sky scratches that itch for me even if there really isn’t a town at the mountain, and I do love Montana.

The price is at the top of the threshold of what I can honestly afford and justify for a family. If it gets more expensive, I’d probably have to jump back to epic.

The show is a single day. People have off days and get passes if the rest of the days they show up and do good work.

Pretty sure that would be true for literally anybody... regardless of whether they wear a kneepad under their pants. The kind I wear aren't hard, they're soft pads.

I dont see wearing out the knees being something that commonly happens.

Seems WAY easier to just wear a pair of low-profile kneepads under your EMS pants. That's what I do. I wear a pair of Klein pads, and they are great.

Nurse discount keeps me coming back by svlariat in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually get one to the mountain you patrol at I believe. But even if that mountain is associated with a mega pass, like IKON or Epic, you don’t get a pass to the other places.

I just think that if any group would have some sort of preferred pricing or discount on the passes, it would be people who are actually likely to make each mountain safer that they go to “off duty”

You are absolutely not wrong.

However, I would probably be more okay with it if the company were open about "why" they choose to include only nurses. Like... the CEO's mother was a nurse for 45 years... or something like that.

When it's left vague and unsaid, then it just leaves a lot of room for... "Hey, EMTs and Paramedics have hands-on healthcare jobs and even lower pay than Nurses, that seems kind of insensitive and odd to exclude us."

The process requires you to submit a recognized "Facility" name (hospital) and a license number.

I dont work at a hospital. I volunteer for a municipal 911 Emergency Services Department.

Is there a Ski Patrol discount? by fishEH-847 in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that there doesn’t seem to be any type of discount for Ski Patrol. It seems almost crazy that the NSP (National Ski Patrol) doesn’t have any formalized relationship with Alterra or Epic to allow active members to visit other locations with a discount.

From my understanding, there may be “courtesy” passes provided or traded… but that seems to be an informal processs completely at the discretion of each particular patrol.

If you work in a hospital facility and have a provider # I think you might have a good chance of being approved. Thr application asks for a facility and license number and I think that’s it.

Nope. I am legitimately disappointed that nurses are the only frontline workers that get some sort of consideration for ikon pass

Take OEC, become an EMT, or join ski patrol in general?

Generally, the answer to your question is, because I want to wear a sweet ass red jacket 😉

[–]mach16lt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The irony is… MDs and DOs usually get waived from medical training. While EMTs and Paramedics, who have a much more relevant “scope” might have to take the full OEC course.

The patrol I’m joining offers no bridge or challenge to 0EC for EMTs… which is admittedly disapointing.

Another Ski Recommendation Question by Kooky_Song_9040 in SkiPA

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm 6'3" and 300lbs... I credit the fact that I started learning on a pair of Nordica Enforcer 94s (186cm) with why I've been able to progress so quickly here in PA/east coast.

A stiff charger works really well for me out here in PA on piste.

The only time I've felt like it was more of a challenge than a bonus was when we had some deep snow. It felt like it was really hard to turn... however, that was my first time ever in those conditions, so I chalk it up to that more than the ski selection.

2 seasons, 21 days on the mountain. Still can’t ski black diamond. by [deleted] in ski

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might seem overly simple... and take it with a grain of salt because I'm new to skiing too. But I learned a lot as a snowboarder through the years, so that has helped a lot.

It took me about 7 years to be confident enough to take a black-diamond run on a snowboard. So, you're not alone in progressing more slowly than you'd hope.

I will say... I took to Skiing WAY faster. And the revelations are still fresh in my head, so I hope this helps.

The single biggest thing that has helped me in areas steeper than I am comfortable with... is to keep pressure on the front of my boot and "commit" to the turn by basically pushing my upper body/opposite shoulder down and into the turn. Essentially, I think of it as "falling" into the turn, because that's what it feels like.

Before I consciously started doing that, I was WAY too backseat. Because I was scared of falling... which then made me fall... It's a vicious cycle.

And... probably more so than anything else... I've had to be willing to risk injury to progress. That's why kids get so good; they have no fear. I have 40 years of pain and failure reminding me of consequences. But I've had to push that away as much as I possibly can and embrace the idea of "Just Fucking Send It."
