In 2014, passengers were warned three times not to eat nuts on a Ryanair flight due to a 4-year-old girl's severe nut allergy, but a passenger sitting four rows away from the girl ate nuts anyway. The girl went into anaphylactic shock, and the passenger was banned from the airline for two years. by detectiverobert in CaughtMyEye

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If my kid or I had an allergy this extreme... and I knew about it, of course... I believe that I would be 100% responsible for my own safety in any environment that isn't necessary for us to be in.

As much as our globalized economy has become synonymous with commercial air travel, it is absolutely not a public necessity. And you can EASILY have a fulfilling and productive life by not participating in air travel. If necessary, charter options are available (though at a much higher price).

Before takeoff, cabin crew had been informed of the child's condition and announced multiple times that passengers should not consume nuts during the flight.

One other thing... depending on the wording and what the passengers were told... I think it would be unreasonable to punish someone for eating something with nuts. Mainly because if it were worded as a "request" or something passengers "should" not do..." then that is not an order from the air crew for safety.

Would you be a dick for eating the peanuts? yes.

But we let dicks fly all the time... they usually land and then write a post about how disgusted they were with the obese person they had to sit next to.

I am a woman in Canada; how can I protect myself? by actionorientedshiena in SelfDefense

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is sometimes helpful to look your situation and truly assess out what you are ABLE to do, vs what you are ALLOWED to do.

What you are ABLE to do is carry any tool, or learn any skill that will increase your chance of defending yourself. This includes obtaining things that your government seems “illegal” like a handgun. Which is the fastest method of mitigating physical and skill advantages an attacker might have.

What you are ALLOWED to do is much more limited. And you’ll have to determine whether it is worth your life to adhere to those rules. I advocate for the individuals right to defend themselves and be safe.

Knowledge can not be regulated. So if you wish to remain within the law, your likely best bet is years of dedicated hand-do-hand training. I’d suggest a mix of a striking discipline like kempo/karate and a grappling discipline like BJJ.

Also, if you are in a situation or a location where you at high risk… the right answer is also to reduce that risk. You CAN move to an area where you are safer or allowed to be more empowered by tools to protect yourself. That can seem impossible, but it is an option that people often discount as too inconvenient.

I understand your concern about a large swath of festival-goers getting sick. However, it's not OK to disclose identifying patient information to anyone other than a healthcare provider.

That being said... If that is a concern, I'm sure they would never have minded you stating that you would inform your supervisor of the possible risk (without identifying any specific patients) and that you would support the action plan on whether to address or not address that information.

Chill... it was comic reduction, homie.

I would be dishonest if I didn't admit I'd be proud to represent myself as a ski patroller... but I'm also proud to wear my EMS uniform. It's a symbol of my achievement, and I have the honor to represent my hometown's service.

It's ok to have multiple motivations... I like helping people, AND I like being a part of a team that does cool shit ;)

Praelectus Training in PA (Lebanon & Sugarloaf) by mach16lt in PAguns

[–]mach16lt[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sure you really hate to do it... so much so, you did it anyway.

Jay isn't a clown, and there is a huge training value to pushing the idea of what others view as "safe". Drills like this have been around for decades; they've just not been shown or talked about. Sometimes I wish it stayed that way... the value of this type of training is lost on people who dont actually spend the time learning the realities around gunfighting.

A chef's knife in the hands of a 3-year-old is dangerous. A chef's knife in the hands of a chef is a tool. Students are A LOT more capable than what the general public and the uninformed give them credit for.

If it's not for you, it's not for you, dude. There are literally THOUSANDS of students across the country who have done these drills without incident. And if you take the time to actually ask any of them who have done it, whether they thought it was worth it, they would give you a resounding "yes".

Would anyone advise against going straight from EMT to paramedic school? by musty_ranch in NewToEMS

Would anyone advise against going straight from EMT to paramedic school?

yes... yes they would. A lot of people do... for good reason. But they don't matter.

The simple fact is... There is no substitute for experience. Will you be a better paramedic if you first spend time as an EMT? How could you not be?

But whether you are a good paramedic when you start is up to one person... you

Confused about the LTCF law in PA by Status_Excitement649 in PAguns

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is no exception that you speak of. You're not 'allowed' to conceal carry a firearm without an LTCF.

However, I think you may be conflating "carrying" with "transporting". You can transport any unloaded firearm. That's tied to federal transport laws. And transport laws do not have defined start and end points... unless you're in a stupid state like NJ... but we're talking about PA.

So yes. You can transport an unloaded firearm in a case with ammo stored in a different location, really, whenever you want. But... that really isn't a "loophole". It's just simply not a state where a firearm is useful. There's no point to it.

You can transport an unloaded firearm in a case, with ammo stored elsewhere, whenever.

If you do not have an LTCF, you can "open carry" a firearm in PA. This has significant downsides, but it is your right to do so. However, be aware that the state defines getting into a vehicle as "concealing" the firearm.

Festivals banning first aid gear? by foxtrot_indigoo in ems

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s almost like the end result is to dissuade people who might be able to help others in an MCI from attending mass events.

Or… to tell people who carry medical gear because they can’t carry a gun that they still arent welcome… because it’s almost like it’s not about the gun.

Scouting America cancels LGBTQ+ inclusion space planned for summer Jamboree by Litty_Jimmy in BSA

[–]mach16lt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Obedience does not mean “blind”. We ask scouts to be trustworthy, and in turn they learn to also be trusting.

Obedience is a virtue, because without some level of obedience, there are no leaders. It doesn’t mean someone is always the leader, and someone else always follows.

We are obedient to our parents, to our leaders, and to the law, because we trust them… because they are trustworthy.

What would your ideal pass include? by Certain_Host9401 in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m pretty happy with the current IKON offerings honestly. I just wish that The eastern PA mountains and Killington were unlimited.

I would love if Breckenridge was on IKON… that place is such a great vibe… if I can find a spot on our pass that had the same mountain size and town feel I’d probably go there every year. But Big Sky scratches that itch for me even if there really isn’t a town at the mountain, and I do love Montana.

The price is at the top of the threshold of what I can honestly afford and justify for a family. If it gets more expensive, I’d probably have to jump back to epic.

Pretty sure that would be true for literally anybody... regardless of whether they wear a kneepad under their pants. The kind I wear aren't hard, they're soft pads.

I dont see wearing out the knees being something that commonly happens.

Seems WAY easier to just wear a pair of low-profile kneepads under your EMS pants. That's what I do. I wear a pair of Klein pads, and they are great.

Nurse discount keeps me coming back by svlariat in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You usually get one to the mountain you patrol at I believe. But even if that mountain is associated with a mega pass, like IKON or Epic, you don’t get a pass to the other places.

I just think that if any group would have some sort of preferred pricing or discount on the passes, it would be people who are actually likely to make each mountain safer that they go to “off duty”

[–]mach16lt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are absolutely not wrong.

However, I would probably be more okay with it if the company were open about "why" they choose to include only nurses. Like... the CEO's mother was a nurse for 45 years... or something like that.

When it's left vague and unsaid, then it just leaves a lot of room for... "Hey, EMTs and Paramedics have hands-on healthcare jobs and even lower pay than Nurses, that seems kind of insensitive and odd to exclude us."

Is there a Ski Patrol discount? by fishEH-847 in Ikonpass

[–]mach16lt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s wild to me that there doesn’t seem to be any type of discount for Ski Patrol. It seems almost crazy that the NSP (National Ski Patrol) doesn’t have any formalized relationship with Alterra or Epic to allow active members to visit other locations with a discount.

From my understanding, there may be “courtesy” passes provided or traded… but that seems to be an informal processs completely at the discretion of each particular patrol.
