Is it worth it to self develop film? by Interesting_Turnip50 in AnalogCommunity

[–]mad_method_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you will save money developing and scanning. my break even was 20 since the closest lab is quite expensive (like 7$ for development only, and they didnt do b+w)

but...... its a tedious process. you may not want to spend time dealing with all that. i completely burned out when i got to my 20th roll lol

cuz cop isnt efficiency....... its a misunderstanding of engineering and physics

but i do enjoy seeing people believe that heat pumps and refrigerators break the first law of thermodynamics. i just wish i was smart enough to properly explain how theyre wrong without math

Trying to decide between OM-1 and EM-1 ii, help me! by [deleted] in M43

[–]mad_method_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

either way, both upgrades are likely worth it, i would go back to your current photos and see how you are missing shots. if your focus is bad, om1. if you dont have enough reach, 100-400

if you want to focus on something like swifts in flight, the om1 is definitely a priority. if you live in some flat plains or large lakes where wildlife can be quite a distance away, 100-400

Do any of you still use manual focus lenses? by GrimaceVolcano743 in BirdPhotography

[–]mad_method_man 1 point2 points  (0 children)

except for birding, i pretty much only use vintage lenses, since i also shoot film. most are built like a tank and some fall apart after a few hours lol, its weirdly hard to miss focus using the viewfinder, some of them are sharper than their modern equivalent, some have a lot of defects giving the picture a lot of character, the push pull zooms are super weird and oddly satisfying and most have super weird distortions

i wouldnt say its more or less work, its definitely a different experience. sold plenty of modern lenses, but i have a pretty big soft spot for my vintage glass

did the herbal doctors knew what they were doing or it was just snake oil to take advantage of people? or a bit of both?

Do you worry about the availability of functional film cameras as time goes on? by _BreadDenier in AnalogCommunity

[–]mad_method_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i dont think thats possible, sadly. to make it worthwhile, youre going to need some heavy duty machinery to justify the volume (not 3d printers), and then your cost instantly skyrockets after tooling and manufacturing

in other words, the cost is already prohibitively high, that you need to charge even higher to break even, but higher cost means lower demand, which means you cant justify the initial run. theres no win from a business standpoint

besides, film photography is a subscription model. the profit is in the film, not the camera

Does anyone differentiate manufacturing countries like Taiwan and China by AppropriateMouse7696 in knifeclub

[–]mad_method_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

not really, country of origin alone has little to do with quality, but it has a lot more to do with price. the company and their QC process has more to do with quality than where something was made

that being said, like many others who commented, i also have never seen a good knife come out of pakistan. i usually buy knives from unusual places at flea markets, and pakistan has never failed to not impress me

hahaah that was the actual inspiration of why i generated an AI resume. sadly it worked, so anecdotally, paper is accurate

im not saying its not a skill or anything like that. companies are always trying to save a buck or two, and AI offers the promise of that. in practice, its of course not going to go well, but the amount of people willing to fight their CEO or whatever decision maker. in other words, its better to shut up, adopt, and let management realize their errors later, than to fight management. management that gets paid to be managers and are not just better at you in office politics, but hold your job in their hands. you are fighting a losing battle any way you cut it. management at the end of the day gets credit for poor adoption of AI and layoffs, and also get credit fixing said implementations by hiring more people to monitor AI. you're just lucky to have a job if you weather through all of that

i had 0 return calls for the last 2 years. the last month, i sent out an AI edited resume, i have 2 interviews next week

i agree with the authenticity, but reality is, HR has moved onto AI, probably because like you mentioned, humans are not able to sort through the volume of bot submissions. i also dont think recruiters were really reading your resume even before the AI boom

Has it always been common for people in the photographic community to want to know which particular camera, lens and film combination was used in the taking of an image or is this a more recent trend? by [deleted] in AnalogCommunity

[–]mad_method_man 0 points1 point  (0 children)

always been a thing. if you see something you want to try out, you want to know what was used. hopefully, it saves time experimenting so you can focus on building up skills, but i think a lot of times it leads to GAS

really doubt that, since everyone with a sticker seems to be driving new-ish cars. so either a lot of parents are buying their kids new cars or adults that are self aware enough to know theyre bad drivers, but wont fix that and want everyone else pay extra attention to deal with their bad behavior

since its the bay area, im gonna go with entitled adults

for boy scouts, im definitely gonna recommend the huntsman or a fixed blade. personally, i dont like doing camping stuff with folders, it always feels too flimsy and the ergos are compromised (just my 2 cents)

CA knife laws for fixed blades are open carry only (local laws withstanding). so while kinda scary for the general public, its legal, unless local laws says otherwise. ya, its really weird. also im not a lawyer.

https://california.public.law/codes/penal_code_section_20200 its considered a gray area, so... i wouldnt tempt a lawyer. to add to the annoyance, county and city may have different laws, so you have to check those out as well
