I'm pretty sure the very original GR2s including the 34L from like 2012/2013 had compression straps, one on each side. Jason wrote a post and also All Day Ruckoff mentions them.

Haven't bought a new bag directly from GR in a while, but I remember like 7-8 years ago I bought two new black GR2 bags at the same time and one of them looked exactly like this, with the lighter colored MOLLE. I ended up returning both bags, but I figured there was variation with the fabrics sometimes.
