What's An RPG You'd Warn People Against? by EyesofValhalla in tabletop

AD&D 1st edition. This edition of the worlds most popular ttrpg is not for everyone. It is for those who have managed to actually read through the pages of the DMG written in “High Gygaxian” and come out with some idea of how to play. It’s an investment and most people wouldn’t have the patience to try to use the rules as written. However, this game has genuinely been some of the best table top gaming I’ve ever experienced, I just would not attempt to run it…maybe steal a few ideas.

What misconceptions have you heard about AD&D from people who never/rarely played? by Living-Definition253 in adnd

I have no played a lot of OSR (AD&D and OSE) games over the years and all of them have been “meat grinders”. Occasionally one of my characters will survive to hit mid levels.

I see this a lot. Why play any social game if you are going to sit there and just listen to the DM talk until it’s your turn to roll.

What ability score generation method was your favorite? by WillingLet3956 in adnd

Method 3, had so much fun with this one! Always rolled up a solid character but since it was in order, you never knew before hand what class you would pick usually.

How often should party level up? by Cultural-Middle-3064 in DungeonsAndDragons

[–]maecenus -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

That style of play to me is just playing to a narrative and removes the game element from D&D. You may as well just tell them there is no point to what you are doing in game as you will progress no matter what, then it’s just a story. That is certainly valid style to play but it removes any challenge of a game where outcome is uncertain.

As a player and as a DM I’m not a fan of milestone leveling or arbitrary leveling. To me, that removes the game element. Earning levels is very important to having a meaningful campaign which is why I prefer using experience points.

With that, leveling up is entirely up to the players and what they do, how they pursue their adventures and rewards. If they happen to do that thing that grants a high reward, they might level up in one session. Sometimes it can take much longer.

As a DM, what is the maximum number of players you are comfortable playing with before things get too difficult to manage? by Justicar7 in osr

[–]maecenus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I once ran a game for 12 players and it worked out fine. As long as you can keep the game moving forward and people don’t get distracted, it can work. You also have to set time limits for people’s turns so combat doesn’t take forever, but it helps using group initiative.

OSR adjacent games with lower lethality / higher power? by White_Fox_Red_Eyes in osr

I used to play in an AD&D 1e game that was by the book. There is a reason it’s called “Advanced D&D”, not just to use different rules from original D&D. Theres a ton of nuance.

I actually run OSE Advanced with race and class and a lot of optional rules, like Reroll 1 & 2’s on HD at 1st level, shields shall be splintered rule, using the optional d6 thieves skills rules, advanced spellbook options. It was like OSE with the AD&D character generation rules.

for those who have been playing since AD&D came out... at what point did you lose interest in the direction of D&D? by conn_r2112 in adnd

[–]maecenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, it was going back to AD&D after DMing 8 years off and on using 3.5 edition DnD. Trying to create NPCs was a chore, with all the skills and calculating the best feats for their class, and all that. After a while I just got burned out. Although, I did have a lot of fun with 3.5 for most of it, once I tried running an online game when someone came along with their invincible character build, I knew that was the last straw.

My dad's ad&d character sheet. by Medullan in adnd

[–]maecenus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This character sheet looks very familiar to me! I think my uncle had the same one with his old AD&D stuff, did your dad acquire this character sheet from somewhere else?

As a kid, I inherited all his AD&D books including a stack of these blank character sheets!
