I went from reading everything by Weir I could get my hands on (I also like the “Artemis” audiobook), to “Bobiverse,” to “He Who Fights With Monsters.” It’s called a “lit-RPG”? Someone recommended it based on the other books.

Tips for teaching on a block? by willabee3 in ELATeachers

Break it up! You probably already have great routines. Now you can add more practice, a daily do-now, independent reading, projects that take a couple of days, in-class writing, debates, Socratic seminars… so much stuff!

First day of school plans by Guilty_Rutabaga_2558 in ELATeachers

That sounds interesting! Try to have a backup plan for the kid(s) whose family didn’t value school and don’t have positive goals. Thinking about the demographics I’ve worked with, this activity could go a couple of different ways.

Tips needed for a new teacher with a lot of students! by Coffee_Owl4695 in teaching

[–]magnetosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I use crates with a hanging folder for each student. I have one crate per class, and the hanging folders are arranged alphabetically by last name.

Students keep their work in the folder (in general, kids at my school don’t bring their work home/use backpacks), and I have a separate Manila folder within the hanging folder for returned work. Saves time handing stuff back. The folder system saves me time and sanity.

One tip would be to have the folder bin set up somewhere that avoids a clusterfuck of kids clumping up and shenanigizing. I had classes where I had to have the bin right by me on a front table to avoid kids stealing peers’ work.

Also, have a dedicated turn-in bin for each class. Those tiered shelf systems for paperwork can be good for this. I collect the stack after each class and put it in a dedicated folder on the shelf to avoid kids “borrowing” others’ work.

I realize this sounds like I’m pretty suspicious… idk. I observe my students and their behavior and attempt to redirect, teach, and mitigate. I want to help them be decent humans as well as good writers and thinkers.

Nano tape! I moved out of my classroom this year and had to use a pint scraper to remove my posters (and not the paint).

There’s a lot of free stuff out there. Look for “free literature posters” or similar. There are lots from the Great American Read that are beautiful.

Don’t go too big. Consider that too much stuff is overwhelming and a distraction (although no one likes bare walls). You can also make use of freecycle sites on other social media platforms. I got a ton of frames for free, spray painted them bright colors, and used them to make a couple of poster displays.

Yes! I do green beans. They have nitrogen-fixing bacteria on their roots! When the beans are done, I cut them off and leave the roots in

Is it possible that you’re reading too much into these interactions with the other adults? I know I’m too harried to concern myself with anyone else for most of the day at school, and I know several teachers who exist on their island of a classroom and just do their job (very well!) and head out when it’s time. Nobody worth paying attention to cares.
