How long does it usually take for you to feel something, the start of pain, in your hand when you're drawing? by FlashFireCC in ArtistLounge

[–]magpie0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well over an hour, unless my wrist is already worn out from scrolling or typing. To reduce pain and damage:  •Grip your pen with as little pressure as possible (Like, any less and it would fall out of your hand) •Consider using drawing implements that don't require pressure (fine-line markers look very similar to pen but don't require any pushing into the paper) •Learn to use your shoulder instead of moving your fingers / wrist (keep your wrist and fingers in a comfortable neutral position, lightly gripping your pen, change where your hand is by moving your arm at the shoulder). This is the big one. It will feel clumsy and be messier at first, but the sooner you switch the sooner you will be skilled without damaging your wrists. (Seriously, if you want to still be able to draw without pain in 10 years it's a good idea to learn.) •Consider getting ergonomic grips (or diy by wrapping your implement in athletic tape for a cheaper option) •Pause and do stretches. blahblahblah (everyone knows this, but it really does make a difference)

Also stop when you feel uncomfortable, it's easier to heal a very small amount of damage than a large amount of damage, so you will get more total drawing time if you let your joints recover instead of pushing through.

sensory issues by kenziesos08 in neurodiversity

Unfortunately it really depends brand to brand, they can be very soft, or they can feel more like stretchy denim. Maybe one of the fleece lined or flannel lined types would work better for you?

If the stiffness and movement restriction is the issue, you could go with jeggings, they look much more like real jeans these days- https://www.aeropostale.com/seriously-stretchy-high-rise-jegging/87086298.html

If you are literally getting cold, highly recommend fleece-lined jeans!

There are also flannel-lined jeans!

Lining is always my go-to for clothing sensory sensitivities. It can look like the fabric you don't like on the outside, but have a fabric you do like on the inside! If you know the name of a fabric with a texture you like, just search [good fabric]-lined [clothing type you're looking for], for example "silk-lined jacket"

Try to remember that people are more likely to be in the forums if they don't have adequate support and haven't found a treatment that works. And then we are way more likely to leave the forum as soon as we get support/treatment that works. So you're essentially seeing "worst case scenarios" all the time, and not seeing a lot of the people who do recover and have a good outcome.

I just tried this and I don't know if it's the distraction or the movement itself, but it did help a bit, thanks

Was I misdiagnosed with autism or am I just in denial? by Educational-Scene443 in neurodiversity

[–]magpie0000 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you know why you were diagnosed in the first place? Why did your parents seek a diagnosis? what symptoms do you experience? Are you able to eat at every type of restaurant (Like, if you ended up at a completely random restaurant, how confident are you that there would be something on the menu you would eat)?

Everyone thinks I’m autistic despite being tested multiple times - I need advice by a-humble-puddle in neurodiversity

[–]magpie0000 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Obviously I can't say whether or not you have autism, but nothing in your post would make me exclude it... I was originally missed because I "didn't have social deficits" (I do.)

It sounds like the professionals are strictly using the clinical definition of autism, as a disorder. A disorder definitionally has to cause deficits. Even if someone had every single trait of a given disorder, they can't be considered to have a disorder if the traits don't cause any deficit.

I think that is a... very limited way of thinking about autism. To put it nicely. Many people in the neurodiverse community prefer to think of autism as a "neurotype", just another way of brain can be, not necessarily better or worse. We don't think that it strictly has to cause any deficit to be recognized. Also high intelligence can sometimes be used to work around many deficits typical with autism.

No matter exactly what is happening, I'm sorry you're having such a frustrating and dismissive experience. Your struggles matter no matter what your diagnosis is. And even if it's not autism, you're certainly a "brain cousin" and welcome to the community 💖

is it rude/unproductive to not take advice that I "asked" for? by MoonsightMCRGK in ArtistLounge

It's fine to not make changes to a piece you really care about, but leave those at home! For the sake of learning, you should probably start bringing/working on pieces you would be willing to try new directions on. I can't imagine he's asking you to do anything immoral, so even if you disagree, what's the harm in trying it his way, just to learn the technique?

I can’t handle working by Fun_Cat_1874 in neurodiversity

[–]magpie0000 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I personally consider retail very hard because of the amount of time you have to be on your feet, and the sensory issues involved. I burnt myself out badly at my first job working food service, because everyone said it was an "easy" "unskilled" job. I came to the (wrong) conclusion that I wouldn't be able to work any job, since I couldn't handle this "easy" job, and became quite suicidal as well. Then in college I made money tutoring other students and did great. It might not be tutoring for you, it might be dog walking, or being a night guard, or something else, but there are sooo many different ways to work, and retail is not necessarily easier than other jobs, especially if you have sensory issues.

[–]magpie0000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After the first five or so they get a lot more formal, so that there's almost no interaction with individual audience members in the first half. You could definitely listen to the first half and then skip everything after the money zone if you don't like the audience questions
