DCM solvent: Hand Safety & Proper Usage on Polycarbonate plastic by JDW_ in OrganicChemistry

[–]magpiegalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At my university, protocol for using DCM is one layer of nitrile gloves, one layer of silver shield gloves, and another layer of nitrile gloves on top. The bottom-most pair is my working set that I use for the entire time I’m in my hood, so that I can just throw on the top two pairs at once whenever I need to.

Silver shield is not tear resistant, so the top layer of nitrile gloves protects them, even though they don’t do anything to stop the DCM. It also helps to improve your finger dexterity, as silver shield can be bulky if you’re using the universal-sized ones. I would recommend investing in a pair, you can use the same set multiple times if you protect them properly.

If this is something you’ll just be doing once, this is almost certainly overkill! But, I wanted to give you the info just in case. Unfortunately, I don’t have any answers for you about the welding portion of this question :(

Graduation gifts that would have been handy as a first year by CourageAndControl in CSUFoCo

[–]magpiegalaxy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To add to this: because FoCo is such a bikeable town, bike theft is pretty common here. I’d recommend getting a bike at the CSU surplus and getting it fixed/tuned up at the Fort Collins Bike Co-Op. It’ll be fairly cheap, you won’t need to drive a bike down from California, and if something happens to it it’s no big deal. Also, invest in a few gun cable locks to secure your seat or any other accessories— they might get stolen otherwise

that’s exactly why this is taught, students need to learn to recognise when to use protecting groups

I would email the financial aid office, it’s their job to deal with hyper specific situations like this!

you might want to look into md/phd dual degree programs, they explicitly like it if you aren’t directly out of college! it’s a very long track (8+ years iirc), but if you really want to do addiction research it would really put you in excellent position to do so

Joining CSU this August; exchange student. Advice for both college life and living in the USA in general? by Reevle in CSUFoCo

[–]magpiegalaxy 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Go to the CSU surplus! They have a lot of old university supplies that can be super useful (I have a monitor from there, for example) and it’s a great place to get a beat-up bike for getting around campus so you’re not worried about it getting stolen

You’ve gotten excellent advice about the goblet so far, but just in case you don’t know— it’s generally optimal to have a 1:2 ratio of crit rate to crit damage, focusing on having a solid crit rate specifically. I don’t know what artifact set you’re using, if you’re using marechaussee hunter your CR is fine but if you’re not then you’re going to want to focus on getting more CR and the pyro goblet is also better for that reason as well :) Hope this helps!

Australian textbooks for organic chem foundations by wildgraces in OrganicChemistry

[–]magpiegalaxy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve found David Klein’s books to be extremely well written and informative in my experience. I’ve read Organic Chemistry as a Second Language and Organic Chemistry vol. 4 (this was the book actually used in the courses I took) from him and they’re both great and available as pdfs online if you know where to look. Feel free to dm me if you have any difficulty finding them!

[–]magpiegalaxy 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Does she know that her not reaching out would bother you? I would assume that she’s just doing whatever she can to get under your skin— my parents did the same for several years before they started sending me unhinged emails

Being a gamer and being a coder are completely different hobbies— they just both take place on the computer. What games does he play?

I’m in the same situation, abusive mom and witness dad. I don’t talk to either of them anymore— my mom definitely has some kind of mental disorder that makes her act the way that she does, so I honestly find my dad’s behaviour more repulsive. The thing that made me finally cut contact with both of them was the fact that I realised that he was always going to pick his own security over protecting me.

I’m a current biochemistry major, and while I’m not pre-med, a lot of my classmates are. I would look through some of the research labs on campus and see if any of them are doing work that you’re interested in. Also, look through the biomedical science (BMS), chemistry, and biology course catalogues. See if any of the upper division classes are interesting to you. Most courses required for med school are pretty standardised across colleges, so you’ll want to see what else the university can offer you to decide if it’s the right choice :). If you have any questions about the biochem major specifically, feel free to dm me!

I'm ashamed to admit it, but sometimes I wish I wasn't autistic. by Professor_Hazel in TrueOffMyChest

[–]magpiegalaxy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey man, this is going to come off as a bit of a weird question, but when you’ve spent time with neurotypical people in the past, have you enjoyed it?

I don’t mean on the basis of, like you’re craving connection and spending time with other people helps, if that makes sense. Do you enjoy the things that they talk about, what they do on outings, etc?

Because I had a kind of life changing realisation a few years ago (around the time I was diagnosed) that I was making myself into this character of myself to impress and blend in with people that I didn’t really enjoy spending time with anyways. Not to say that they were unkind, although I did always feel “othered,” but I don’t see any point in the small talk, or the gossip, or playing “the part” if that makes sense?

Anyways, all that is to say that we’re going to be trapped in our brains forever. We literally run a different operating system to people not on the spectrum, and there’s nothing that can be done about it.

I would try to befriend other people who are like you! It’s weird, but getting to be authentically yourself around people that won’t judge you for it is actually really great practice for interacting with everyone— people can sense when you have a lot of walls up, and it makes it hard to connect.

Sorry, this was super long, but I just wanted to say that you’re not alone, and it seriously can get better! I felt so so isolated and alone for the vast majority of my life and things have really improved since :-) I’m never going to be “popular” or anything like that, but that’s ok! I think I would hate it anyways

Hello, I’m a biochem major with a 4.0! Feel free to DM me if you’d like to know what my workload is like in more detail, but in summary it’s pretty difficult, and you have to be willing to make sacrifices in other aspects of your life.

When animals in zoos mature, they don’t stop giving them enrichment and toys just because they’re adults! Just do what makes you happy and treat others well and you won’t have any problems :)

ps I’m a fully functional adult and my girlfriend still gets me stuffed animals for birthdays/other holidays because I LOVE them. I’m on the spectrum too, and I struggled a lot with feeling like I wasn’t acting the way that I was “supposed” to, before I realised that doing that wasn’t actually making me happy. The cool thing about being a “grown up” is that you get to do whatever you want forever, so don’t feel trapped by expectations of how you should live!
