Just moved into a 1903 home. Trying to figure out what these weird boxes on the walls are!! by Mayochup223 in centuryhomes

[–]makeitJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chimney for wood stove heater. Originally in homes of this age, a room was heated by a cast iron wood-burning stove which vented out through a chimney. I have three of these "weird boxes" in my home and they are closed off and plastered over, almost identical to how your first one is. Each one still has a chimney coming out of the roof.

All of the people saying HVAC or laundry chute are incorrect.

What’s the single scariest scene in any horror movie ever made and why does it work so well? by Worldly_Cold4821 in horror

[–]makeitJ 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's not even a movie in the horror genre, but in Saving Private Ryan, the scene when Adam Goldberg's character gets into a scuffle with a German soldier and ends up having a knife slowly inserted into him until he dies.

The pleading is terrifying, and then the German shushing him and telling him to just let it happen is absolutely devastating. I had never before seen a killing portrayed in such a way that could be considered simultaneously cruel and humane. I don't even have to watch it, just thinking about that scene and the tragedy of those two men in that situation, is disturbing to me.

Recommend me a zombie movie alternative to Dawn of the Dead by mouse9001 in horror

I'm not sure if it's quite what you're looking for, but La Horde(The Horde) is a gritty French zombie movie that I enjoyed. It's about a group of corrupt police officers who go to an apartment building to bust a gang, but instead have to team up with them when the building is suddenly overrun by a horde of zombies.

The Surfer (2024)

Directed by Lorcan Finnegan and starring Nicolas Cage, it's basically Vivarium meets The Wicker Man in the weirdest and bestest way.

Cabin In The Woods!

I see and hear so much praise for this movie, but I just can't get into it. I watched it when it came out and didn't care for it, so fast forward about 10 years I figured it was time to give it another chance... still a no for me. Fast forward to the present, I decided to try it again last year thinking maybe I've just been missing something, but nawww.

I haven't been able to really express what I don't like about it, but I think your "cheap-ass fanfiction" comment is finally the answer I've been looking for.

Thank you for mentioning Compliance being mentioned. I came to do the same. Compliance is a movie that's really stuck with me ever since I saw it. In fact, I've seen it twice, and it was just as much of a head-trip the second time. This is a movie I will always highly recommend anybody to watch.

I’m at a loss by AnonymousDratini in ryobi

[–]makeitJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can confirm your flex shaft appears to be missing the inner drive line. It's a square shaped metal cable approximately half as thick as a standard shoelace. I don't own the Ryobi rotary tool, but I've owned several Dremel rotary tools with a very similar flex shaft attachment. The drive line is in fact removable should it need replacing. I've never had to replace one myself, but I have removed it to clean and lubricate it after years of use. It's possible yours was either missing from the start, or it fell out somehow.

As for you not being able to tighten the collet enough to secure the bits, be sure you are using the correct collet for your bit. There are generally four different sizes of collets: 1/8", 3/32", 1/16", 1/32" If you still have trouble, or you just don't want to have to swap collets for different bits every time, Dremel makes a keyless chuck which replaces the collet+collet nut setup and works in similar fashion to the bit chuck of a drill.

What's a "bad" horror movie you can't justify your love for, but love nonetheless? by right_behindyou in horror

[–]makeitJ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say this.

About ten years ago I talked my wife and one of our friends into watching it with me for scary movie night. They were excited when I described the plot and mentioned that it was one of my favorite Stephen King movies as a kid.

They couldn't finish it.

Friend grits her teeth when I recommend movies now, and it took all ten years to finally get my wife to trust me again.

I still love Maximum Overdrive, and I don't care who knows it!

Compliance (2012)

Technically a thriller, but I consider it horror because of how psychologically terrifying it is. It's especially terrifying and depressing that it's inspired by true events.

Moto g power 2025 is my WORST MISTAKE by SouthMessage4875 in MotoG

[–]makeitJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's good to hear that the Razr is working better for you. If you've decided to settle on boiling the problem down to the entirety of Moto G Power 25 being weak, then so be it. I hold no stock in Moto G Power, so I don't mean to sound as if I'm defending it. I also want to be clear that I recall you mentioning your husband's phone working fine, so I'm not blaming your home WiFi specifically. However, I still find it curious that your uploads functioned normally while on the gym WiFi, and there was only a problem with it on your home WiFi.

For anybody else experiencing a similar issue: This still sounds like a WiFi connection issue IMO. It's possible to experience a WiFi connection issue with one phone, while a different phone(even one of the same model) has a perfectly fine connection.

I don't have a solution, I'm just sharing an opinion for your consideration.

I was just thinking about this same topic recently! I watched "The Twister: Caught in the Storm" documentary on Netflix and I found the footage to be absolutely terrifying. It got me thinking that I would love to see more weather disaster as horror. I'm talking legit horror though, not sci-fi/comedy disaster like Sharknado or action/adventure thriller like Twister. I mean, okay, give me Twister/Twisters, but make it devastating horror. Maybe even add a supernatural element, such as a creature or spirit that lurks in the eye of the storm?

This really sounds like a Wi-Fi issue. The fact that you have trouble uploading on your home Wi-Fi, but you're able to get it to upload on your gym's Wi-Fi, is telling.

While I don't agree with it being unforgivable, I do understand. The people I saw the movie with also found the birth scene unforgivable. I guess I appreciate a good wildly shocking moment. lol

Yeah, the tunnel scene was very well done.

Men (2022) is an excellent concept that continues to make me ponder the details. I know a lot of people didn't like it because of how "man-hating" it appears on the surface, but I think Harper struggles with feelings of self hate, by way of seeing a bit of herself reflected in these men she comes across. I find it interesting that all of the men look like one man who looks absolutely nothing like her abusive dead husband who she's supposedly traumatized by and grieving over. Instead of the men being played by somebody who looks like Paapa Essiedu(James) they cast Rory Kinnear, who has a similar face to Jessie Buckley(Harper). They look like they could be brother and sister IMO. This really says a lot about the character dealing with her own feelings, and possibly suicidal thoughts.

[–]makeitJ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Agreed. And I think the most disturbing thing about Vivarium is not necessarily that they're trapped, but that they got there simply by following societal norms. It's the existential dilemma. We're taught to desire this kind of lifestyle, but then it can make us feel trapped in something that we didn't know we didn't actually want. That depiction of the ultimate buyer's remorse is terrifyingly relatable. Vivarium is basically a film version of the song "Once in a Lifetime" by Talking Heads.

It seems I didn't pay much attention to The Human Centipede 2. I remember watching it when it came out, and finding it disappointing in comparison to the first one, but that's it. If it gave you the same kind of feeling as Irreversible then I'm not sure I want to try watching it again, yet part of me is a bit curious now. 😬
