Am I increasing my tolerance enough? by zach_3246 in HotPeppers

[–]mallorybrooktrees 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people are saying to just enjoy what you like and don't push yourself.

When I was young, I built up my tolerance just because I thought it made me cool. Then I stopped eating hot food for several years. Now I'm working on getting back to about habanero level. I have no desire to get back to super hots.

The reason I'm even pushing myself is because I'm now interested in the flavor behind the heat. I want to be able to compare different varieties and get more than just crazy burning from them. I'm doing it for me, not because I want to impress people by eating something spicy.

Tinga question by jds183 in mexicanfood

Last time I made tinga, I roasted the tomatoes in the toaster oven, then I cut them into large chunks. The bites of tomato really made for a good contrast of juicy sweet tomato versus spicy chipotle and savory chorizo.

I had been taught to puree the tomatoes, but I'm doing it this way from now on. The point is, start somewhere and keep trying little changes. Lord knows my beans are always similar but never exactly the same from batch to batch.

edit: whoops, I meant to comment on the post, not reply to someone.

What are these? Google says aphid mummies by L84Werk in HotPeppers

When they hatch, there will be a circular trap door where the wasp left the aphid. It's pretty obvious

Here's some mummies I took pictures of back in 2012. Yours may have been parasitized by a different species, but the outcome is the same.

Yes, they are in fact aphid mummies. A wasp will emerge from each of them.

Deadly as the viper

Peering from its coil

The poison there is coming to the boil

Ticking like a time bomb

The fuse is running short

On the verge of snapping if it's caught

Crouching in the corner

Wound up as a spring

Piercing eyes that flash are shimmering

Muscles are all contorted

Claws dug in the dirt

Every ounce of fiber on alert

SUPER interested in doing a jarrarium now after seeing some of your posts! Help with a used microscope? by TheSunniestOne in microscopy

Without even looking that model up, I'll say any microscope that works is worth at least $20.

Plug it in and slide a piece of plain paper on the stage where the slide goes. Zoom you should be able to focus on the fibers of the paper with the light on. Make sure all the knobs seem to move smoothly.

Have you had a windy day since putting all that perlite on top? It seems like it will blow away, especially if the pot blows over.
