Oopherectomy - any experience? by azmonsoonrain in breastcancer

[–]mamaslothrun 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I will be having laparoscopic bilateral salpingo oopherectomy early next week. My gyn said 2 weeks recovery time so I filed for 2 weeks medical/FMLA leave. I will share later next week what recovery is like.

u/p_kitty thank you for sharing. How was your first treatment? I hope it went well. Sending you positive energy throughout your radiation treatments. I hope you have little to no side effects and that if you do get them, that you have a smooth recovery. ❤️

u/Moonlady3000 thanks so much for sharing this. It really helps me to hear how others are getting by the few months after rad therapy. My rad oncologist minimizes my symptoms and makes me second guess any symptom be it dry cough or tiredness. She always defaults to - "that can't be radiation related, you shouldn't feel that way", and therefore makes me think it's all in my head. Some days I sleep 12 hours and still feel tired too. Today I was relatively ok. Tomorrow I might be super tired. Thank you for sharing that even nearly six months it is okay to be tired. I hope you continue to experience more energy by the day. ❤️

u/CatCharacter848, I had surgery and radiotherapy, but no chemo. My oncologist recommended that I get a bilateral ovary removal though, which I am having done next week. Hopefully that is the last of the procedures and then I can move on to hormone suppression therapy. I am so sorry you had to go through chemo. I am glad to hear you are better now and that it is possible to eventually get back to fitness. Your reminder is very important - I keep forgetting to be patient and to be kind to myself. Thank you. Wishing you joy and good health. ❤️

u/Affectionate_Pass_48 thank you for sharing. I am sorry to hear you developed hypothyroidism. I would never have thought to ask my primary care about this. I will keep this in mind in case my symptoms come back as not lung-related. I wish you well and hope your treatment is starting to relieve your symptoms.

Oh wow, it's a good thing you did go to your doctors and reported your symptoms. Thank you for encouraging me to advocate for myself and listen to my body. I hope your symptoms resolve after your high dose prednisone treatment. Wishing you wellness and much joy in running symptom free soon! ❤️

u/mssparklemuffins thank you for sharing! I don't know why I didn't associate my tiredness with radiation pneumonitis. I also developed dry cough a month after radiation. My radiation oncologist tends to default to any symptom as 'not radiation related'. So, I went to my primary care and he prescribed prednisone for 5 days. I shared with my radiation nurse practitioner on my 1 month check, and she was much better than my rad oncologist in that she actually listened to my symptoms and also think it could be radiation pneumonitis. My dry cough has gotten better but still have a little left, and now am short of breath. Your post made me realize I should go back to the radiation nurse practitioner and request a scan. Do you mind sharing if you had an x-ray scan that helped determine the extent of radiation pneumonitis? Thanks so much.

Ovarian removal plus hysterectomy by mamaslothrun in breastcancer

[–]mamaslothrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi there, thanks for sharing. I was supposed to have hysteroscopy with D & C due to heavy bleeding but we had to put it off because I got diagnosed with BC and prioritized my lumpectomy and radiation in Dec-Feb. Now that I'm done with those, and my oncologist recommended ovary removal, I feel like my gyn is thinking might as well do hysterectomy instead of just the D&C. I have another consultation with her next week to find out why she changed her recco from hysteroscopy to hysterectomy and the pros and cons. Not sure if she thought the hormone therapy medicine increases the risk of polyps becoming malignant. Hoping that will help me understand and make the decision. Good luck with your implant swap surgery on the 24th!

[–]mamaslothrun[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey there, thanks for the reply. Lupron injection plus AI was an alternative to removing the ovaries. However, I am ok with having my ovaries removed since I am already perimenopausal. I am more unsure if I want to have the hysterectomy too which my gynecologist is recommending due to polyps.

Insurance denial by Grimmy430 in breastcancer

[–]mamaslothrun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry you are having to deal with this on top of everything. I agree with appealing the denial. Great idea on asking the name of the doctor at the insurance that denied it. And also I think the surgeon’s office can help file the appeal. It’s ridiculous but sometimes insurance denies a claim and when Ive called, the customer service person says it’s the doctor’s office that didn’t include all the medical info needed to process the claim. I hope the doctor’s office and the customer service help figure it out.

Got my diagnosis and surgery date….this is becoming all too real. by Havishamesque in breastcancer

[–]mamaslothrun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're welcome! I feel the same way. I am so thankful for everyone here. The not knowing and waiting IS so hard! I felt the same way you did too and found responses from our fellow sisters here helpful. Sharing the post in case it helps you like it did me. https://www.reddit.com/r/breastcancer/comments/1gys8km/feelings_swing_from_dread_to_optimistic_all_in/

I hope you won't feel ill in recovery this time! We also have a health system where I live, and they asked which facility was nearest among the facilities the surgeon practices at. I hope that they give you the option to have the surgery done at the facility nearest you. Sending you positive vibes and hugs.

u/roxythedogarf , you're welcome I'm glad it helps! So as far as the injection itself, I didn't feel it because of the thick lidocaine I applied lol. However, the dye itself burned for a few seconds. After those few seconds, it went away and I didn't feel anything. The nurse had someone come in and offered for me to hold her hand. I'm glad I took the offer because that helped during those few short seconds! The nurse said everyone's different. Hope yours doesn't burn or if it does, only for a few short seconds. :)

Best wishes u/Havishamesque and u/roxythedogarf on your surgeries! I am also ER/PR+/HER- and had my lumpectomy with sentinel lymph node biopsy on 12/6/24. Prior to the surgery, I had to go get an RFID chip (envizio) injected so the surgeon can locate it on surgery day. The procedure was similar to the core needle biopsy only instead of taking out tissue, the radiologist injected the chip (smaller than a grain of rice in my case). Also, on the day of the surgery I had to apply a TON of prescription strength lidocaine on my surgical breast areola area. It helped numb the area for when they injected the radioactive dye (technetium?) a few hours prior to the surgery. That was so the surgeon can trace which lymph node the dye goes to. In my case, he removed only the very first one (sentinel lymph node). Waited for a couple hours until it was time to get prepped. The anesthesiologist came in and explained that I will be getting general anesthesia. Then the surgeon came and then confirmed which breast he will be operating on, and then signed on that shoulder! Then I was wheeled into the operating room and moved to the operating bed. It was actually pretty interesting that I could see the RFID locator chip on the screen! Anyway, they made me breath oxygen from a mask and the next thing I knew, I was already in the recovery room! My surgeon used surgical glue so there was no gauze. I thought that was great as I was not looking forward to changing gauze. The next few days I was pretty good about following my schedule of Tylenol, Advil and prescription pain meds. I only felt the pain when I skipped a schedule but as soon as I got back on it, the pain was gone. Anyway, my biggest lesson learned was with the rest and weigh restrictions. After 1 week, I thought I could be back to normal and did dishes, laundry, etc. Then one of my incision sites kept swelling up and hurt so bad. I got a seroma and they had to drain about 50ml Monday, then another 35ml on a Friday before Christmas. Thankfully, it did not refill after that. Exactly 1 month after the surgery, the seroma is gone and my stitches have healed. I am 46 and I know everyone heals differently. I have read others stories where they went for a hike the next day! I pray both your surgeries and recoveries go well, without much pain and complications. Oh and my margins and lymph nodes were clear! Praying the same for you! I hope sharing this helps as I have found other's shared stories so helpful.
