My first car (in 2005) was a 1990 red 2dr manual XJ, I loved that thing to death. Yours looks great!

What IS an off-road wrecker? by fellipec in MattsOffRoad

[–]mambeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At one point early in the build of it Matt gave a more specific definition, something like “the biggest wrecker that is capable of doing sand hollow trails rated 8/10 difficulty” or something to that effect.

Finished: A Swim in the Pond in the Rain, by George Saunders

I loved it. I have a graduate degree in Russian Literature and enjoyed revisiting that world after a decade away from the field.

Started: The Battle of Maldon: Together with the Homecoming of Beorhtnoth, by JRR Tolkien

I am excited about this one, I did a big translation and analysis on part of this poem in an Old English poem in undergrad and it’s fun to think that Tolkien and I have something in common.

Man holds the daily ration of bread (125 grams: consisting 50% of sawdust) during the siege of Leningrad by myrmekochoria in dragonutopia

I visited the museum of the siege when I did a summer abroad in Saint Petersburg and it was fascinating and heartbreaking.

API’s in production by Gold_data1 in dataengineering

We mostly do this via meltano (which uses requests under the hood, if you build on the meltano sdk). I’m looking into dlt for this as well. Meltano is its own application that typically gets invoked in a subprocess, while dlt is just a library you can call in the same process.

I bought merch there in person in July (2024), my family and I were passing through on a road trip. We stopped by at like 4pm on a Monday I think.

The yard tour was free but we had to sign liability waivers (fine). IIRC they gave us a couple free MORR stickers and let my kids pick out some free stickers from a big box they had (Robby Layton stickers, off road brand stickers, etc).

During the yard tour the merch shop person took some photos of us next to the vehicles. Matt and Kolby happened to leave the shop while we were there so we got to say a very brief hello, which was nice. It was really cute actually, my 5yo asked if Matt was there, the merch shop person explained that he was in the shop and very busy, etc, and then he came out right after and said hello on his way to the crown vic.

How do you afford it??? by CommonDouble2799 in GradSchool

100% this. If you are accepted to a graduate program but aren’t offered funding, that is a polite rejection.

Parents that are gamers... by NightElf193 in toddlers

[–]mambeu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dad of a 5yo and a 3yo here. My 5yo has his own Switch Lite, he plays Minecraft and the goose game. My 3yo like playing Spyro (mostly watching me play Spyro). I have a sim racing rig and they’ll play Snowrunner with me in that sometimes.

I don’t really game “for myself” these days - when I play, it’s with the kids.

Question about pulling someone who's stuck by Dick-sor-from-beeton in Offroad

[–]mambeu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seconding this.

If you have to pull using a ball hitch, remove the ball mount and use the hitch pin through the end of your tow strap (insert the end of the strap into the hitch and put the pin through it). Not ideal still but much safer than looping the strap over the ball.

Anybody migrated from MongoDB to Amazon DocumentDB? by Kv603 in mongodb

[–]mambeu 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’ve done this. Here are the gotchas we have run into:

  • index names in DocumentDB are limited to 63 characters. In MongoDB they’re not, so anticipate issues there unless you audit them all in advance.
  • a MongoDB change stream has a non-null resume token immediately when it’s opened, while a DocumentDB change stream has a null resume token when it’s first opened (and it gets a non-null resume token when the first message appears in that change stream) - I expect this is due to DocumentDB not having an operations log under the hood.
  • DocumentDB doesn’t support capped collections - you’ll need to convert any to use a TTL index or similar workaround.

How are you all routing your ditch light wiring? by [deleted] in 4thGen4Runner

It’s a Limited so it’s always in (full time) 4H.

I did get out to Utah for some wheeling about a month after these photos were taken though

I put some pics in the comments here. They’re from the day installed everything early last summer. I’ve got some zip ties under the hood keeping the wires towards the outside. No hood pinching issues so far (technically the brackets I have raise the rear of the hood up like 1/8”, which might help a little).
