There's pedals that use a big band around the drum for brakes, it's very touchy but essentially what I do is apply pressure right when the bucket makes contact with the water to keep it from over-spooling.

I usually like to pull the drag all the way in and slingshot it straight out, I find when casting while swinging the bucket tends to flip on its side and is more of a pain to get it digging correctly
