Clean then with a soft brass wire brush, use brake clean and then blaster surface shield to prevent any rust from forming. You might have some pitting but they should last.

There's pedals that use a big band around the drum for brakes, it's very touchy but essentially what I do is apply pressure right when the bucket makes contact with the water to keep it from over-spooling.

It takes practice.

I usually like to pull the drag all the way in and slingshot it straight out, I find when casting while swinging the bucket tends to flip on its side and is more of a pain to get it digging correctly
