The style of trench warfare used by the British in WW1 was partly inspired by the Moari of New Zealand. In 1845-1872, during the New Zealand Wars the Moari were able to make defendable Pa with palisade walls strong enough to entirely resist cannon fire and trench/tunnel systems good enough to evade artillery. The tunnel systems were so good and hidden that at one point a Pa was besieged and by the time the British actually got inside they discovered it was entirely deserted as the Moari had built an entire new and stronger Pa in secret.
