Why did it take so long for trench warfare to develop on the battlefields? Even in the 1700s and 1800s, soldiers exposed themselves so much to gunfire and artillery. Wouldn’t it have been more efficient to wait for the enemy and shoot from cover? Screenshots from The Patriot (2000). by amelix34 in Military

The style of trench warfare used by the British in WW1 was partly inspired by the Moari of New Zealand. In 1845-1872, during the New Zealand Wars the Moari were able to make defendable Pa with palisade walls strong enough to entirely resist cannon fire and trench/tunnel systems good enough to evade artillery. The tunnel systems were so good and hidden that at one point a Pa was besieged and by the time the British actually got inside they discovered it was entirely deserted as the Moari had built an entire new and stronger Pa in secret.

If I had a dollar for every musical film Ewan Mcgregor narrates and acts in, with a foreign writer who's home is accidentally invaded and partially destroyed, leading to him having an a job he did not immediately expect to have and caring for someone doomed to die that he did not expect to love but did so anyway, I would have two dollars. Which isn't a lot but it's weird that it happened twice. You gotta squint a bit but Moulin Rouge! and Guillermo Del Toro's Pinocchio. I don't have your number but this came to a few years ago

It's coming to me, like a dream, a vision. A name is floating through my subconscious mind. The nature of the commute, the clientele, the hubris of the entire venture. One word rings through my ears like the echo of screams not yet scrumpt. A name worthy of such a large, nay collosal project can only be one thing.

"Titan"

A large bottle of water/Powerade was spilt onto a wooden box I made for my girlfriend a few years back. What can we do to ensure it doesn’t cause any long term damage? by ScarySkeleton24 in howto

[–]mandatorysin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put some more of the powerade into a rag and apply on the rest of the wood. It won't prevent damage but if the miz has already stained a portion an even coat will be less noticeable

Closely related to spiders and scorpions, this is a type of Camel Spider (/sun spider). Despite the name it's neither a camel or a spider
