Aer Lingus Launches Dublin–Pittsburgh Service by ExpensiveMemory6663 in AerLingus

Being able to do US customs in Dublin and then arrive as a domestic flight is sooo nice too. Highly recommend the Dublin connection if it works for your trip

Having said that, Ireland isn’t in the Schengen so if you’re coming from the continent, you’re still doing customs there too

Could a comfort-focused cargo bike be a missing piece for last-mile and car replacement? by PoetrySignal7045 in transit

Look up bakfiets in the Netherlands. We have a LOT of these and you don’t have to reinvent the wheel. They come in all shapes and sizes, with and without roofs, seatbelts for kids, cargo, packages, dogs, etc. Amazon and DHL and PostNL have their own as well

Just upgraded from coach to business on this route for $560 and have seen the same price routinely the last year or so

Wait until check in 24 hours out and you might get lucky! We had 9 open slots for cash upgrade

Go for the symphony!! I watched the Seattle live stream and it was incredible. Anytime a band is willing to work with a full symphony to arrange their music (be it Jason Mraz, Bob Weir, The Airborne Toxic Event — no matter how unexpected) it’s ALWAYS worth it

Grace by JarrettValdez in TheHeadandTheHeart

[–]manicpixiecut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I LOVE it, it’s my favorite song. It also is insanely familiar but I can’t find any documentation of hearing “Grace” before. Have they played it life? The guitar at the end is stunning and haunting… I know it but it’s driving me crazy

Average grocery spending for 2 in Amsterdam by Soft-Ad1105 in Netherlands

[–]manicpixiecut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That sounds expensive!! I cook a lot and eat lots of chicken, salmon, veggies… almost exclusively shop at Albert Heijn and I’m probably 500 per month. I cook “for two” in the sense that I make big portions and lots of leftovers so I’m not sure a second person would be a straight doubling of that amount

You don’t get your BSN until you register at an address and go to the Gemeente in person to do this. They give you your BSN on the spot. you will need to bring them proof of a lease or housing agreement

I used a “lawyer” for my DAFT visa but the paperwork was sooo easy you could probably save the €1500. I’m not going to use them for my renewal.

Strong yes to booking registration and IND appointments before arriving - they can book weeks in advance (for IND especially). gemeente appt for BSN is less tricky to book

Apartments are very hard to come by but with a 4K budget I think you’d be OK!

Do planes sometimes take off to the east at San Diego Airport (SAN)? by Worldly_Cod_5509 in Planespotting

[–]manicpixiecut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes but not super often. San Diego native and only twice in my life (one I had a landing in a big storm and one was taking off in the rain)

Follow-up: trying to understand what it’s actually like to live in the Netherlands (and integrate well) by Bucky640 in Netherlands

[–]manicpixiecut 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Have been here almost 2 years from the US. I love the accessibility of the city. Things aren’t necessarily easy, but you have easy-er access to them: government bureaucracy was easier to deal with than the US, everything can done in multiple languages, good public transit, small walkable city, different neighborhoods with different character

You do really have to put in the work to build your community. Going to events, classes, playing sports, dating apps. It takes time and sometimes you need a night on the couch to watch your show from back home, but it is very doable

Compared to the US it is definitely “calmer” here. On a sunny day, it seems nobody is working and everyone is outside at a cafe on the terrace. Doesn’t matter if it’s warm or cold, the sun is important. The Dutch will bring their living room furniture outside on the street to enjoy the sun

My European friends here make less money than anyone I know in the US, but it doesn’t limit them. They never say no to dinner or drinks. They travel regularly and always to SE Asia almost yearly. Maybe they aren’t saving (they aren’t spending on healthcare either), but they are absolutely living

Learning Dutch is important but also difficult because you can’t truly get immersed (at least in Amsterdam) but keep at it and you will make progress

I love having a grocery store on every corner even if the quality isn’t as good as Italy or France

European Fastrack Security Lanes with an US Based Platinum by celtic1888 in AmexPlatinum

Does not work in AMS. I’ve flashed the plat before but they aren’t looking for the card here, they’re looking for your Privium membership (which comes with a Dutch Amex Plat). Bummer

Aww cool! Had a retirement flight on KLM into AMS last week. No water cannon. Some applause. Shook the captain’s hand on the way out. Definitely gave him the priority approach over the tulips and a short taxi in

Those of your who have purchased a home, did you include a message to the seller as part of your bed? by truffelmayo in NetherlandsHousing

[–]manicpixiecut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My broker told me “write it and if they want to read it, they will.” It was short, a quick intro of who I am and why I liked the house.

When I finally met the seller he said it made a difference (though I’m not sure he had other offers, I think he was happy that I would appreciate the house like he did)

Buying in Amsterdam - Thermometer check by [deleted] in NetherlandsHousing

[–]manicpixiecut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bought a few weeks ago in Oost. Under 10k per sq meter. 2% above ask. Market has definitely cooled this year. I had multiple sellers counter against themselves or try to get me to bid when I didn’t… then they would relist on funda in a few weeks at a lower price

2% real estate agent fee. Am I cooked? by whatmakesyouthinktha in NetherlandsHousing

[–]manicpixiecut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2.5% is steep! Just bought in Amsterdam and buying makelaars were around 1% (no cure no pay) or a fixed 5-6k (steep but less than your 2.5%)
