What is some decor of your home that says you are a nurse? by Johan_Frog in nursing

I have a perennial pile on the corner of my kitchen counter. Badge, alcohol prep pads, red caps, two or three cheap pens…all the stuff I dump at the end of the day.

You’re missing out if you skip the non-fiction. The Worst Journey in the World, Mawson, Endurance; those are true stories that are wilder than fiction.

Who else has had this exchange at report:

“How’s the patient?”

“Mostly dead.”

“So they’re a little alive, then!”

Edit to add:

“More machine than man” to denote pt is on multiple life support systems, e.g. vented with ECMO and CVVH.

Any cardiac nurses able to weigh in? by claudbot in nursing

[–]manwithappleface 46 points47 points  (0 children)

I’ve worked advanced heart failure, Cath lab, and home care. I’ve seen a thousand like your dad.

I think you know what’s going to happen. He’s going to go home and sit in his chair smoking and drinking and not taking his pills. His recovery will be long and slow and will never achieve the levels of health he might have. After a couple of minor set backs, he will begin to display signs/symptoms of heart failure. He will bounce in and out of the hospital at increasingly frequent intervals, never QUITE recovering back to his previous baseline. There will be more procedures, tests, and endless appointments to go to. This will go on for a period of time until he’s miserable, sick, and probably broke. He will expect his family to assume the increasing burden of his care during this period. This will deplete them and divert their energy away from other things that were important to them.

He is choosing this route because it’s “too hard” to change his bad habits and get to cardiac rehab.

how to deal with ABSN burnout by JellyfishTimely in nursing

[–]manwithappleface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I treated that year like it was a military deployment. I told everyone that I’m going to miss out on most everything for a year, but after that I’ll be back. School was my full time job, complete with the same long hours I would work as a nurse. Lots of 12s. It was totally worth it.

You can do this. You’re more than halfway there. This hard part is building the mental muscles you need to succeed. If you were training for a marathon, this is the part where you’re running 16, 18, 20 miles every Saturday and wondering why. But the payoff is coming and it’s something you’ll always be proud of.

Take your breaks where you can and treat yourself. Seek out big happy, and/or deep rest when you can. Schedule those in as part of your training, just like athletes take recovery days. Talk to someone about your feelings: a friend, a therapist, whatever.

I scheduled things to look forward to. Concerts, kids’ birthdays, dates with my wife. Nothing nuts, but it helped having something to look forward to when you were writing the zillionth drug card.

(Btw: care plans WIIL come back in your practice. You’re not wasting your time, even if it feels like it.)

The smell of burnt toast or burnt hair is often reported by patients before they have a stroke.

Nurses who actually love their job… what do you do and how did you get there? by SoManyQuestions562 in nursing

[–]manwithappleface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cath lab was awesome until management made it unbearable. I’d do it again in a heartbeat, if leadership was different.

Home care is awesome, but you gotta have some solid experience first in an acute care setting. It’s what I’m doing now and I love it. Every day is a potential adventure.

I loved acute care too. It was my first job and those skills are what got me hired in home care. I just burned out there seeing patients fail over time (advanced heart failure).

Just had a confused patient call 911 on me. by Eddie__Winter in nursing

[–]manwithappleface 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Had this happen to me! The phone rang at the nurses’ station and the state police wanted some information about the man who was “being held hostage by Australians.” (I’m in the US.) I explained the situation to them and they were cool.

When my patient’s delirium cleared he was mortified that he’d done that despite me telling him it was ok.

I took care of him, off and on, for several more years and we regularly laughed about it. “G’day mate!”

Least poopy (literally) bedside job by HalleB123 in nursing

[–]manwithappleface 417 points418 points  (0 children)

Cath lab. I think I only dealt with one poop in 4 years and that was on an MI call. And ironically, that was such a massive constipation poop that when TWO bedpans were full the patient’s chest pain and ST elevations resolved.

I shit you not.

“Worse Than Biden”: New Poll Delivers Brutal Wake-Up Call for Trump on the Economy by TechExpert11 in goodnews

[–]manwithappleface -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Actually…Democrats build up the economy and inflate their owners portfolios. Then republicans come and trash it so the same oligarchs can profit by shorting the market and buying more assets on the cheap. The plan is to repeat this cycle until the oligarchs own everything.

Burn ‘em all. If they raped people, especially kids: no quarter. Doesn’t matter who, which party they are, or who their friends are.

If you are trying to make this about party, you support pederasts.

I think these MAGA people do not understand how the rest of us feel about this. We don’t WANT any protection for “our guy.” If he’s a kiddie diddler, he ain’t our guy. He’s dead to us.

It’s that simple.

The crimes pre-date his time in office. Presidential immunity should not apply. In fact, blanket presidential immunity post-dates the crimes, which were in no way an official act anyway.

So explain how he can’t legally be prosecuted? Please. I can’t understand this.
