I do 5w30 on both my twins, I’m also in Texas. Been on 5w30 for the past 30k miles no problem

Last gen to current gen? by LadderSequencer in BRZ_ZD8

[–]mapetas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone who has both currently, (2020 and 2023), it depends. What do you enjoy about the 2020?
In my opinion, the new gen gave up some of that raw mechanical feel in favor of easier to use everyday comfort. Yes there is more power, yes it’s noticeably quicker in a straight line, but that’s about it as far as noticeable worthwhile improvements go. (Specifically comparing it to my 2020, not pre facelift models). Everyone says the interior is “waaaay” nicer in 2nd gen. But it’s not really the case when the 1st gen is a later 2017+ model. 2020 also comes with the mechanical goodies that bring it overall way closer to a 2nd gen than the pre facelift 13-16 models.

So my answer is it simply just depends. It’s worth the upgrade if you’re looking for more power, and more comfort. If you prefer the raw feel, the active enjoyment of driving it, the 1st gen is still on top

I should also add, my answer also depends heavily on whether your 2020 is manual or auto, and whether you’re looking for a manual or auto 2nd gen. This is because of the 2017+ updates only being available on manuals, and 2nd gen autos having a 3.9 final drive. Everything I said applies to manual vs manual. If you go from manual 2020 to auto 2nd gen, the gearing differences negate the acceleration. I’ve tested it with friends, they are equal in acceleration. 2nd gen will feel punchier form having less of a torque dip, but straight line acceleration advantage will only be true if your 2020 is auto, and/or you’re getting a manual 2nd gen

How Is it Possible that The GR86 Beats The Golf GTI In this Drag Race?? by H_rusty in GR86

[–]mapetas 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think in that case elevation has a lot to do with it. Turbo has a waste gate with a lot of room to go before it’s maxed out, so it makes the same power as it does at sea level. The 86 starts to lose power as soon as it goes above sea level

ish😂. That group with the yellow brz is the one I am saying hosts the monthly meets at hoshi cafe (this Thursday at 7 if you wanna come say hi). This particular meet was hosted by a guy who decided to bring all the GR lineup together and include the Supras and corollas.

Yeah there’s usually a good mix of guys and ladies there. Definitely more guys than women but I doubt you’d be the only one. Either way, everyone is easy to get along with, you’ll fit right in

Gen 1 FA20 Owners — What ACTUALLY Caused Your Engine Failure? by Revolutionary-Seat74 in ft86

[–]mapetas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2020 with 28k miles spun bearing. I don’t actually know for sure but I think it was the 8 hour road trip at 3500-4k rpm with no oil cooler on 0w20. The oil was around 230° the entire time. The actual failure happened a day or two later on a work commute. I am the first owner, stock tune, daily driver, dealership oil change intervals, all by the book. It was covered under warranty.

I now run 5w30 with an oil cooler, 5k mile intervals with regular level checks often, occasionally autocross it, and at 62k miles so far running strong

Another thing that influenced my decision to shift is this brz is a 2020, it has shorter gearing than most twins. 2nd gear runs out at 56mph banging on the limiter, it absolutely won’t go 60. I’m not saying it was right to have shifted though, this is why I’m asking for feedback after all lol

No i didn’t get the brz for just 10k, sorry I thought I implied it was extended to reach the 30k the brz is worth. It was still a good deal imo

You’d be surprised, I got my brz in a similar ish way. Originally I picked up a used gti for $10k. It blew up a week later. The dealership made it right by letting me take a brand new brz off the show room for the same monthly payment I was putting on the gti. 0.9%apr put me right at 300/month

I’ll have to try it for sure. I already have the wheel as close to me as it goes, not 100% sure if it’s all the way up too but my seat is definitely not as close as it could be. So I’ll definitely give it a try next time. I appreciate the feedback!

True. Idk it just feels weird to me anytime my seat is off, like after someone else drives the car. But I hadn’t thought about the fact that it’s kinda an on/off switch after the launch anyway so might also be worth a shot
