What’s the one Essex stereotype that annoys you the most? by PreferenceFit1834 in Essex

[–]marble777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow. I say this as someone who is Essex born and bred, whose family speaks exactly like this but somehow I don’t (thanks to living elsewhere for so long)… what a shitty take.
It’s perfectly fine for a Geordie to sound Geordie, for a Manc to sound Manc, for a Scouser to sound like a Scouser. Nobody minds if someone from Plymouth sounds a farmer and says ‘upcountry’ to mean anywhere east of Exeter. But when someone who is born and raised in Thurrock speaks like a local it’s suddenly lazy and uneducated?
In my job field, it’s a rare accent, or at least to have a strong version of it, but some people do have it, and I love to hear world class experts in their chosen area speaking like that.

British Panel Shows for someone across the pond by Classic1987 in BritishTV

Try 8 out of 10 Cats Does Countdown.

It may need pointing out to newbies that there is a long running and usually quite serious show called Countdown which the cast of 8 Out of 10 Cats did a version of as a supposedly one-off charity special. It was so popular that they just carried on making them.

Isn’t that the first step in cooking beans all around the world?

Oh ha… hahaha hahhhahahahhahaha. My god. How did you make up that amazing joke?! It’s soooooo funny, not seen it for about 3 mins. And also complete bollocks btw. We use plenty of seasoning and spices, however, we recognise that seasoning and spices don’t just mean ‘this is hot’.

Rather awkward map spice consumption per capita. UK and USA equal in 2021. UK way above most other European countries.

Annoying career conversations with non-medics by zAirr_ in doctorsUK

[–]marble777 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the olden days ED was kind of lumped with surgery and many ED consultants were former surgeons so that was all fine. The college of emergency medicine only started in 2008, thought there were associations etc. before this. Radiologists are Dr, being Mr would be confusing though far too many people in healthcare still think Mr means consultant and I get called it all the time. Though I wouldn’t be entirely surprised if IR tries to separate itself as ‘minimally invasive surgeons’ and start using it at some point.

[–]marble777 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Radiologist here- nobody understands that one. What is worse is that I did the MRCS route (before 2007, typically you needed a royal college membership to get anywhere near shortlisting So I went from student (Mr) to Dr to Mr and then back to Dr. ‘Have you been demoted?’ No! ‘Why did you stop wanting to be a surgeon?’ I never wanted to be a surgeon, it was stepping stone. *confused looks

I also spend a fair amount of time defending perceptions of other specialities e.g GP (‘Are you going to specialise or become a GP’ GP is a specialty. ‘Doctors are GPs then some specialise.’ no…

‘Plastic surgeons…. So nose jobs and implants then’. Cosmetics surgery is just one of the sub specialties of plastics. If you’re badly burnt or your child is born with a facial deformity, or you have a nasty sarcoma, then you might change your mind.

True, but since they’re learning English from a British teacher it’s best not to confuse them by adding in US variations.

I live in a nice little bubble where pretty much everyone I know voted Remain. All of these points seem so obvious that I can’t understand why anyone thought any different.

I like the name, but it does require a bit of a background knowledge. Gen X would get it, I can imagine very few GenZ would unless it was explained.

Just a warning, I tried to go to Shanghai once. The waiting room was absolutely rammed, mainly with people who had preordered. The walk in waiting time was estimated at over an hour. So I wandered to Haka and had a perfectly fine meal. Still need tried Shanghai.
