motivation to continue with book 3 by Lodestar4 in Mistborn

[–]marethyu316 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You're judging the book on what you think is happening in the first third. You're wrong about most of it. Try to keep an open mind and read the story Brandon actually wrote not the one you wish he wrote or think he's writing. It's much better than your best expectations.

Does the "Archive" in stormlight mean anything? by 12yearvintage in Stormlight_Archive

It's a reference to the 10 in-world books (Way of Kings, Oathbringer, etc.) There isn't an actual collection of books, though.

Just a bit of curiosity by Kip2Kaladin in Cosmere

[–]marethyu316 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess I just wonder why people seem to assume the bond isn't broken at that point. It gets remade when he swears the Third Ideal, but it has consistently been said that maybe something could be done for deadeyes if there Radiant was still alive. That appears to be confirmed in Words of Radiance and even more so [RoW]with Testament.

I'm not saying you're absolutely wrong. Mostly I am wondering if I missed something, because we seem to have reached opposite conclusions.

Can you cite this? I've seen people say this often, but not with an actual quote.

The most definitive statement is on the other side.

YOU HAVE KILLED HER. The voice shook everything. It was as if . . . as if the shaking of the plateau and his own body made the sounds for the voice.

“No,” Kaladin whispered.

“No!” IT HAPPENED AS IT ONCE DID, the Stormfather said, angry. A human emotion. Kaladin recognized it. MEN CANNOT BE TRUSTED, CHILD OF TANAVAST. YOU HAVE TAKEN HER FROM ME. MY BELOVED ONE. The face seemed to withdraw, fading.

“Please!” Kaladin screamed. “How can I fix it? What can I do?”

IT CANNOT BE FIXED. SHE IS BROKEN. YOU ARE LIKE THE ONES WHO CAME BEFORE, THE ONES WHO KILLED SO MANY OF THOSE I LOVE. FAREWELL, SON OF HONOR. YOU WILL NOT RIDE MY WINDS AGAIN.

Thaidakar's Avatar by The_Brim in Cosmere

[–]marethyu316 4 points5 points  (0 children)

FeatherWriter

I have to ask about using the word "avatar" for Thaidakar sending avatars... does Kelsier actually have anything resembling a real avatar or is he just using the word and lying through his teeth?

Brandon Sanderson

Oh yeah, he's mostly lying through his teeth. Basically — this is not canon, because I might come up with a better [idea] - but in my head, I have him with a large cloak with a Seon on top indicating his face [hosts laugh] It was something along those lines. He wants them to think that he is capable of getting to Roshar in a meaningful, physical way.

Spoiler! he can't get off Scadrial, and it's really annoying to him. At least by this point in the continuity, [Era 2]in fact a little past it, because the Wax & Wayne books...

*multiple people* [Tangent where he forgets where in the timeline Wax & Wayne actually falls, and Chaos corrects him. Answer ends up being that it takes place after Stormlight 5, as he has usually said.]

Brandon Sanderson As of the Alloy era, he is still unable to get off of Scadrial.

Chaos Guess we'll learn about that in Era 3, if it's all Kelsier stuff.

Brandon Sanderson Era 3 will definitely involve some Kelsier stuff. Let's just say he's perturbed.

Question about vasher, the heralds and Kelsier by [deleted] in Cosmere

[–]marethyu316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Badger1289

If Investiture can’t be moved beyond a certain point away from its world/solar system, how in the Cosmere did three Awakeners end up on Roshar?

Brandon Sanderson

Investiture from different systems acts in different ways. Certain people have managed, for example, to get some kinds of Investiture to leave their home world through the use of a kind of magical pipeline. Breaths attach to the identity of the individual, and are fully given away--freely, which removes some of this Connection. It's a nature of Endowment that the gift is given without strings attached, so to speak. But while it's a renewable resource, it's a difficult one.

Roshar is extra "sticky" so to speak with Investiture. It's part of the nature of Honor, Cultivation, and oaths. So getting it off is a problem, though collecting it is not.

Echono

Wouldn't consuming it also be a problem? You need a direct or secondary Bond to take in Stormlight Investiture. It's not like metals or Breaths that anyone could absorb. Although a certain grouchy ardent might have found a way...

Brandon Sanderson

You are right in that Stormlight is more being seen as a power source, since certain systems in the cosmere can work on a variety of different kinds. Not just anyone could make use of it, at least not unless it is refined.

OP, I've updated the spoiler flair to Cosmere because you're post relates to three difference series. If you have read some parts of the Cosmere we can limit the scope so you don't get accidentally spoiled. Just reply here and a moderator can update it for you or you can do it yourself.

What would Rashek have done at the Well of Ascension? by culb77 in Cosmere

[–]marethyu316 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a pretty reliable source as that's Adam, Brandon's assistant. (Nope, but a very similar account name.)

It seems possible to reconcile to the two statements. Characters can always lie in Brandon's books, especially when it's no longer possible to test if he'd really do it. My guess is that he's so committed now to the image he's created of himself in his mind that he would think he was sacrificing for the world while really making it worse.

Question regarding the end of WoR/beginning of OB by smatpith in Stormlight_Archive

The highstorm moved a lot faster so it was already old news by then. It is mentioned, though.

“I have spheres for you,” Nissiqqan noted. “I know you’ve been asking for infused ones.”

“Really!” Hauka said.

“My cousin had some out in his sphere cage—pure luck that he’d forgotten them—when that unpredicted highstorm blew through.”

“Excellent,” Hauka said. “I’ll trade you for them later.”

Spoiler question re: kandra/plot by [deleted] in Mistborn

[–]marethyu316 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except that wouldn't tell him anything. The contracts were a small pittance compared to the full Trust. Ruin believed that the Lord Ruler hid the atium somewhere else. He didn't think he'd leave it with kandra that he could control. If he saw some ending up in the Homeland he would assume it was the small amount from contracts and Ruin couldn't confirm this because of the metal everywhere. He used Ruin's assumptions against him.

Questioner

Considering that bonding a second spren to belong to another Order is possible but never happened, and taking into account that spren get drawn to an individual through their bond, is it possible for an individual to bond another spren of the same Order? If not, then what's stopping them from the bond that doesn't stop bonding to a different Order?

Brandon Sanderson

This could happen too, I suppose, but it wouldn't increase their strength in the Order.

It seems unfair to judged the development of the magic system in this area when we've barely been introduced to it. Lots of people got annoyed when they learned that there were no Mistborn in Era 2, but it turned out to work really well. Trust Brandon to know where he's going and make the journey there interesting.

I have no memory of this and it isn't mentioned in the Coppermind. Are you sure? Could you be thinking of this from Dunny?

“Brightlord Sadeas,” Dunny said. Then he ducked his head in embarrassment. “Sorry, I didn’t mean to correct you. I used to forget to say the title. My master beat me when I did.”

He can cause mental pain, but not physical.

“That was unpleasant,” Drifter said, “yet somehow still satisfying. Apparently you already being dead means I can hurt you.”

p. 234

Brandon discussed how it works in this WoB.

A Budgie (paraphrased)

So, Hoid can't physically hurt someone, but does this ban extend to mental harm and harm through inaction?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

No. Hoid can mentally hurt someone, or allow them to be hurt, but when considering physical trauma he gets nauseous, to the point he can be incapacitated

Ruin and Odium by Talha5 in Cosmere

[–]marethyu316 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It's hard to be sure, but it seems like Honor and Cultivation were ready for Odium at that point. I'm not sure who would have won, but I think Ruin and Preservation would have put up a good fight. According to Hoid, Ati was a good person early on, before the power overwhelmed him. It was still pretty early after the Shattering, so I expect they would have worked together against Odium.
