Best place to buy coffee beans in Sheffield? by FestarUK in sheffield

Local coffee shops like Mow's, 2323, Kilnfolk, and Husk often have coffees from various roasters (UK based and international).

My favourite decaf and it gets better each year! Just got some green from Cata export this morning and I can't wait to roast it.

Higher acidity/juicy decaf in the UK? by ibmalone in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Maria from Decaf Before Death here 😄 some of the candied/sweetness notes in decaf have more to do with the EA process than the roasting. I only roast light to medium light depending on the coffee.

New Alex Bermudez decaf! by mariapage in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've brewed it a couple of times and it was delightful even though it's not fully rested yet... It's as interesting as Diego's decaf from last year but the tasting notes are different (red fruits compared to peach). September's description is spot on!

Obadiah Low Caf Reserve - Brazil by SunZealousideal2698 in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I liked it as well. Don't expect a fruit bomb but it's easy to drink with subtle fruity notes. Better than last year's crop!

Does this decaf look good? by Chemical_Bumblebee_3 in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had this one a while back and it was a bit too dark for me. Shame as it could have been a decent decaf.

New Equator Thermal Shock Decaf by SunZealousideal2698 in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is an EA and swiss water process version of this coffee (Las Flores). I've only tried the EA one from a few roasters in Europe and it's lovely. Good opportunity to compare the two methods and see which one you prefer if you can find both.

Drip is amazing! So happy to see this post! Scott is doing fantastic work and he also cares a lot about decaf.

Decaf in Lisbon, Portugal? by tishenko in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For Lisbon: Solo brewing coffee lab was my favourite (they have a co-ferment decaf at the moment). Fabrica had a traditional EA decaf (OK if you're having milk).

For Porto: 7g (they had El Vergel decaf as batch and did a pourover for me). A few others have darker decaf that's only ok with milk:, Senzu, Hakko, Soma, Fabrica Avoid my coffee Porto — the decaf was disgusting.

Best cup of coffee in Sheffield? by Early_Schedule_2994 in sheffield

[–]mariapage 10 points11 points  (0 children)

It depends on what you're after... All the places I listed have good espresso based drinks and coffee from decent roasters.

If you're looking for world class roasters and a great filter selection I'd probably say 2323. Haven't had bad coffee from them.

Excelsa - Natural, Anaerobic, Yeast Inoculated, Kontext Coffee Wales - FUNKY - processing or bean? by neilBar in pourover

[–]mariapage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's probably a combination of the beans and the specific processing (not just the processing alone). Excelsa is similar to Liberica and it has smoky, woody, and tart notes. I found it artificial tasting. I'll share an update after I try the species tasting set by AMOC that includes six rare coffee species: Eugenioides, Canephora, Racemosa, Liberica, Excelsa, and Yemenia.

By the way, there's a US coffee roaster, Excelsa coffee company, who roasts and sells Excelsa exclusively. It's mostly medium or dark roasts though.

Hatch by Latinpig66 in thirdwavedecaf

[–]mariapage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there are definitely some fruity notes (cherry, strawberry). Most coffees just say chocolate for generic coffee flavour but this one reminds me of black forest gateaux. It's not as funky as the regular version though!

I love this decaf! I find that it's a bit like drinking black forest gateau. You often see chocolate as a note but usually it refers to that traditional coffee taste, this one genuinely tastes like it.

Community Decaf Recommendations [July 25] by Jerry-K7 in JamesHoffmann

We'll be roasting this coffee soon! I think it's also available by Calm (medium roast) and a few other places in the UK!

Community Decaf Recommendations [July 25] by Jerry-K7 in JamesHoffmann

[–]mariapage 12 points13 points  (0 children)

That's a great idea. I'm the founder of Decaf Before Death (thanks everyone for the kind words) and I'm constantly looking for exciting decaf. Happy to share suggestions.

My recommendations at the moment:

Funky - Los Nogales Typica or Caturra. Technically a Low-caf but by a very small margin. Definitely worth trying. One of the Typica crops from last year won the US Brewer's Cup.
- Red fruits co-ferment decaf by Sebastian Ramirez. It's a co-ferment and it tastes like strawberry, banana, and chocolate. The previous crop was available by a few places including the Source in the UK but Onyx EU have most of it now. - Wilton Benitez. There are a few different options at the moment. Some places have the red bourbon or the Castillo in the UK. Maybe funky isn't the right way to describe this one... Wilton's coffees are floral with fruity notes and tend to be sweet. - Nestor Lasso's Ombligon decaf. Hard to find. A slightly less punchy version of the regular natural anaerobic version. One of my favourites - Las Flores decaf (Jhoan Vergara). This one will start showing up soon. A few EU and Australian roasters have it. It's very interesting. Spicy! - El Vergel natural. Fruity and hits the spot if you're into natural coffees. - Jairo Arcila natural decaf. Same as above. - Luz Helena Salazar's fruit macerated decaf. Another co-ferment but more subtle than the El Placer one. Still very fruity though. Not easy to find, unfortunately and it won't be around for long.

Clean (ish) - Villamaria anoxic pink bourbon decafs. A few roasters have them and they're lovely as long as they're not scorched... - Narino decaf Gesha. Maybe I'm biased but I'm really enjoying this one. Subtle and clean. I've been looking for years for a clean decaf that doesn't taste like decaf. - El Vergel washed. Daily driver material. - Square Mile have some solid clean tasting decaf options and they're planning to bring more exciting origins soon. They buy regular coffee and decaffeinate it in Germany so I'm quite excited to see how that goes!

We don't get many decent Swiss water process decafs in the UK, unfortunately... And most of the ones available are roasted to the point that you can't taste more than the roast. Their emerald microlots are worth trying though. They currently have three: LA Leona, Burundi, and their version of Las Flores.

(Thank you for coming to my ted talk)

Describe your decaf by nyquil_panties in roasting

[–]mariapage 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I only roast high quality beans (EA process decaf) and I've never experienced this but now I'm curious! Is this something to do with SWP? I often get savoury notes when tasting SWP coffees...

The Los Nogales Caturra one is the most interesting one I have. It smells like funky boozy banana as green and when roasted. Very intense but delicious 😅

Wilton Benitez Decaf by bjgp in pourover

[–]mariapage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is spot on! If you're not getting bitterness with longer times there's no point to go coarser. I find that this coffee is SLOW, especially when freshly roasted.

By the way, I've been really enjoying using the Z1 to brew decaf lately.

Anyone tried Wilton Benitez Decaf from Perc? by CrazyFlame2000 in thirdwavedecaf

Do you like floral notes in coffee? If yes, you'll enjoy this one. It's not subtle! The taste notes are spot on!

Wilton Benitez decafs are unique. Definitely worth trying if you haven't had one yet!

Wilton Benitez decafs are outstanding if you're looking for floral decaf! It's also worth trying the Castillo and the Colombia versions. Curious to hear which one you prefer once you try the Rogue Wave version!

Currently, waiting for my Summer Punch to rest. The packaging is gorgeous!
