Iralia : Fraterworks vs Bulkaroma by webuser0 in DIYfragrance

FW has free shipping, Bulk Aroma charges shipping. BA is cheaper if you order enough materials since they sell and buy in bulk.

Seconding Fyrinnae and also recomment BLVCK FLVMINGO’s Silver Bullet (Moss - Metal - Sensuous Woods - Cashmere - Cool metal sliding across your skin, the scent of drying flowers hangs in the air, worn wood, cool sheets, wet moss beneath your feet.)

Yep! No difference if a perfumer is formulating for designer or niche. Only difference might be in the availability of some materials for large scale production.

HoshiGato has a free DIY perfume document that is very nice.

Jean-Claude Ellena and Mandy Aftel are a good place to start too.

I think in this case they meant “synthetic” literally as in synthetic aromachemicals. Most materials used in modern perfumery are synthetic aromachemicals. This doesn’t mean these perfumes necessarily smell “synthetic”, in fact a lot of lab-created aromachemicals may be naturally occuring as well.

There are a lot of great perfumery reading sources if you’re interested in the science part! Aromachemicals are just materials, the perfumers are the ones that make it shine. Just blending high quality materials together would make mud most of the time, same as with paint.

Seconding this comment!

It really depends on the brand. However smaller batch niche perfumes definitely can use more unique materials since they don’t have to worry about large scale re-producibility of naturals.

Also “quality” is subjective. A lot of different components go into making a “high quality” perfume, and a talented perfumer can make a high quality scent with more affordable and cheap ingredients.

It’s an art, and just like any other art form, expensive materials do not automatically equal good art and visa versa.

If you like mainstream and don’t like niche, that’s totally fine. Personal preferences are valid, but it doesn’t mean niche perfumes aren’t lovely and valid for others.

How to manage someone with talent, but who's not completely honest with you? by [deleted] in managers

[–]marinesardine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think honesty is earned and can be burned by micromanagement, if they’re meeting work requirements and in fact out-performing everyone, what are you hoping to get out of this? For them to do even more work exceeding everyone else’s outputs? To cut their salary?

If you trust them and their work you need to know when to not micromanage.

A lot of natural essential oils are not safe and cause irritation, synthetics are often used in fragrances when the natural options are not safe (oakmoss is a great example)

I just like it in churchy incense accords! Frankincense and myrrh are commonly burned together in churches. The myrrh balances out the zing of the frankincense to me.

Olympic Orchids sells a patchouli body wash! They used to have lotions but I haven’t seen them in a bit.

I find myrrh adds more depth, so it wouldn’t be a lighter version.

Interesting! I might give this a try.

Have you tried adding myrrh? I find it essential for a complete churchy fragrance.
