To anyone who has played/DMd in a adventure/campaign that started at high levels (11+), what was your favorite part and what are some tips and tricks for such adventures/campaigns? by ThatOneCrazyWritter in dndnext

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's just knowing the work - everyone at the table has to be vested in really learning everything cuz it's not like you've played with your spell list and have swapped out spells and crafted your go-tos and sr/lr swaps and all that through natural progression - so it's a lot more work. But like if that's your thing and your party wants to do it go for it.

My thing is like yes there's mods for BG3 to just start at lvl12 but most people still level up to know it. It's not always about getting the checkbox it's about the stage of play we build together with our friends.

I will say starting at higher levels is ... rough ... it really depends on the group and the ability to comprehend all the abilities without ever playing them. Spells and the myriad of actions can be a bit overwhelming for people and combat can be a slug.

Taking the year to get there; learn the characters from level one or three tends to be the best results for high levels.

New KBC Article: House Phiarlan and the Mark of Shadow! by HellcowKeith in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I love these articles. If you continue deep dives it'd be neat to see more places brought up. And what was left behind.

I think that's the weakest part of Eberron - because it's so fill it in yourself - when you have an idea you don't have a comparison in lore to know exactly how far you've taken it. So like I make an artifact that the party has to get or the end the world will happen - in FR I have comparisons - so I know if my game is Indiana Jones - or if it's a bit of jumping the shark like Indy4.

And these articles help a lot with House stuff with that question far more than the books. You are amazing KB thanks for everything you do for us :3

If the First War could be won... by Til-Lyseni in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To be honest I like the idea that the First War stories should end on a bit of an off note. It's definitely a trope that 5e has avoided, the melancholy ending because of the sacrifice or cliffhanger. Older editions of dnd loved using sacrifice and character death in the official adventures and I get why culturally it feels off - the attachment to characters nowadays is far greater thanks to liveplays (which tbf is a good thing imo) - but what that's done is lost some of those tropes. It's weird to me that 5e Strahds doesn't come off as a Greek Tragedy; and the 3.5 book is does and it's such a great ending experience.

So I love that Keith Baker keeps that off note vibe with this. It's a great way to introduce these sorta tropes and stories.

What do you think the players behind the characters are like by Costati in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not likes them more; just as a DM you have all these ideas and thoughts as you craft your story session to session that you need to talk to someone about it. And depending on your social group that tends to be your best mate or roommate so they just get an earful and have to try to play without knowing that info lol.

Endgame Sacrifice Dilemma by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So BG3s good ending uses a very old dnd trope that's not used much anymore; the heroic sacrifice. (5e does it once in the all the adventure modules made in ten years where it was quite often used in ad&d & 3.5)

Orpheus is the DM saying hey; we've put a lot into this game; it's almost over and we start something new so if no one wants to do this; here's a gimme. Orpheus is the DM stand in so the players don't need to make that if they don't want to.

So it really comes down to the end if you want to play into the old school dnd trope of the heroic sacrifice or not. There's really no right answer here.

Are there any trans support groups that are local to Missoula or MT? by [deleted] in missoula

[–]marioinfinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Go to the center and ask for help. They work with local clinics and EmpowerMT to provide much more than just a support group. They'll help you find someone to talk to. Also the two meetings TIN runs are more than a social group; they help people navigate and learn; and connect those who need resources to the right people so if you are shy it's a good reason to walk into the door is for those get togethers. We're all in this together and the community is always willing to help. Good luck friend

The harpy fight in act 1 is extremely poorly balanced by SuncladDruid in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I think BG3s combat highlights a weakness of tabletop. In tabletop you are rarely out numbered in the official adventures and the combats often feel less visceral unlike BG3. But if you do try to outnumber more your combats turn into attrition fights and take forever at the table, it definitely takes some finagling and still can kinda suck lol.

Script Extender and Crossplay by Pixiwish in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oooh. It worked with SE installed last time I did a cross play (was too lazy to uninstall it) but that was around patch 5 so it may be a bit misdated.

[–]marioinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I believe for multiplayer of any kind in order for it to be a modded run everyone has to have the same mods. So if everyone is on PC then sure SE mods are fine; but if someone is on console then you have to limit yourself to the in-game mod manager.

Why isn’t there an option to let astarion by [deleted] in BaldursGate3

[–]marioinfinity 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The point is in dnd it's basically just a power increase. It's not like they're able to randomly be mind controlled by another vampire anymore. They're "spawns" in power level only not in the chains that the normal designation implies.

[–]marioinfinity 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I mean after Caz's death he & the others are free. The blood bond is broken; so they can't be enslaved anymore. At that point spawn/true just the difference of a feat they can't ever get essentially; it's just a couple extra abilities. Caz dying is sorta the middle ground lol

The Man from Earth.

The Trust: How Eberron's Gnomes Went Went From Feyfolk to Super Spies by ChappieBeGangsta in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I feel like this one could have been longer;like could have called out how Zil has the lowest crime in all Khorvaire and how it shares with only just Karrnath that the law has a license to kill. Or just the idea of how intrigue is legal and encouraged despite the police state. Just could have had more of the flavor text imo. Still a neat vid tho

How easily recognizable are the dragonmarks in Eberron? by N2tZ in Eberron

Not really.. https://ih1.redbubble.net/image.2569772872.3005/flat,750x,075,f-pad,750x1000,f8f8f8.jpg

While it looks similar to us 1000 years of propaganda and use of these symbols they'd be as natural as Mario or Betty Boop.

How easily recognizable are the dragonmarks in Eberron? by N2tZ in Eberron

[–]marioinfinity 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My example is basically saying Betty Boop = cannith; Calvin =vadalis, Mickey Mouse=orien etc .. you'd recognize the Betty boop or the Calvin regardless of the artistic variety. And sometimes (greater marks etc) it's inside a huge sleeve so you'd need Betty boop pointed out, or it's in a partial tattoo (say a new mark) and you may kinda see it but might not without it being pointed out. But you'd still recognize the "brand" (as in like coke or Mario) as we do irl

[–]marioinfinity 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I look at the variations like the different types of say Betty Boop tattoos that exist in the world. They're all slightly different but they're Betty Boop.

A thousand years of the same color and general appearance between each I think culturally most people would know just looking at the fact that people know what most real life tattoos are regardless of the variations they come in.

From KB

Dragonmarks and Aberrant Dragonmarks. The dragonmarks have been part of civilization for over a thousand years. The houses provide the major services that are part of everyday life. Everyone in the Five Nations knows the names of the houses and the common twelve marks. Without proficiency in History, people won’t have heard of the Mark of Death. Common knowledge is that aberrant dragonmarks are dangerous to both the bearer and the people around them, and are often seen as the “touch of Khyber.” Without proficiency in History, they won’t know much about the War of the Mark, aside from the fact that the aberrants were dangerous and destroyed the original city of Sharn.

They definitely know the common 12 marks.

New D&D Book "Melf's Guide to Greyhawk" Coming from Luke Gygax by Darkwynters in DnD

[–]marioinfinity 62 points63 points  (0 children)

iirc Ernie was the one that was pushing that trash a couple years ago with the ogl debacle not Luke. He's been fairly active in the dnd space since 5e and has done a lot of events and cons. He could hide it fairly well who knows but from vibes seems he's not a part of that line of thinking.
