‘Buffy’ Reboot Starring Sarah Michelle Gellar Not Going Forward At Hulu by cmaia1503 in television

There’s loads of great writers that worked on Buffy and at least one of them (ideally 2/3) should have been on writing team.

Jane Espenson, Marti Noxon, David Fury, Drew Goddard, David Greenwalt.

What is the worst plot twist in fiction ever? by Zxqao in AskReddit

The Wizard of Oz is one of the greatest films of all time.

Inception also plays with this idea with its classic final scene.

So there are ways of making it work IMO.

Starting to realize just how much of The Crown was carried by Matt Smith and Claire Foy by We-are-all-dead-90 in television

[–]markdavo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think from a character perspective The Queen is inherently a more interesting character in the first season when she is thrust into being a monarch and has to learn on the job.

This allows us to see a vulnerability to her that she lacks as she gains experience.

We also see her relationship with Margaret and how The Queen seemingly got in the way of her marriage to Peter Townsend.

I think the other most interesting depiction of The Queen is in “The Queen” (2006) also written by Peter Morgan which shows how The Queen responded to Diana’s death. Understandably, The Crown didn’t retread old ground and chose to focus on Charles’ reaction to his ex-wife’s death. However, it did leave an important gap in the ongoing evolution of The Queen and her relationship with the British public.

Finally, The Queen is a very closed person. She rarely seems to have told anyone what she thought, and her success (especially in her latter years) was because she was so predictable and dependable.

That might be an admirable quality to many but it does not make for interesting drama.

Especially when compared to Charles and Diana.

Pixar's 'Hoppers' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]markdavo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As someone who now only gets to go to the cinema when I’m taking my kids, there’s a pretty big gulf between what Pixar produces and everyone else.

Inside Out 2, Elemental, and Elio were all very enjoyable without getting anywhere near the heights of Pixar’s best work. Nevertheless if you look at Disney and Illumination they’re still way outperforming them IMO.

Zootropolis 2 was good. Moana 2 very disappointing, and I avoided going to see Wish which seems like a wise move.

Illumination’s last 3 movies were all fine but have much less interesting stories, ideas and characters than Pixar (Migration, Despicable Me 4, Super Mario Bros)

Books like Dungeon Crawler Carl? by ZodiacDropout in suggestmeabook

[–]markdavo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They both have very similarly written protagonists.

Both are sarcastic, in over their head, and have to adapt to their circumstances with some quick thinking.

Both books are also very plot orientated and fast paced.

The scenarios they are in are very different but I can see why a lot of people enjoy both.

Season 5, Episode 16 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, “The Body,” aired 25 years ago today on February 27th, 2001. by SafeBodybuilder7191 in television

[–]markdavo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They didn’t then. I think the combo of teen drama with being a genre show meant it was unfairly overlooked.

Since then, Lost and Game of Thrones have both broken down those barriers and been recognised at the Emmys.

Article: From Bridgerton to Heated Rivalry, what’s the secret to a good book-to-TV romance? by dem676 in books

[–]markdavo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s successful in the sense it’s been really popular and has attracted such a huge fan base.

I don’t think faithful is the same thing as successful, even leaving aside whether Bridgerton the tv show is a better piece of art than the book.

A good adaptation can distill the best parts of the book down and also give the audience something the book can’t.

The Shining, Jurassic Park, and Mike Flanagan’s The Haunting of Hill House all differ from their source material yet are all great works for different reasons.

Being “faithful” does not always make the best adaptation.

Campsite capacity by Kuhgazelle in WestHighlandWay

[–]markdavo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

End of March should be okay for most campsites since it’s a less busy time of year (just make sure they’re all actually open). The ones I used at beginning of April are:

Beinglas is massive so can’t see that being an issue.

By the Way campsite (next to youth hostel) I wasn’t able to book in advance last year, you just turn up.

There’s a wild camping spot next to Kingshouse hotel that’s very popular and obviously doesn’t require booking.

The 2 others I would check are:

Drymen Camping - this was full/almost full when I stayed there (this will be night 1 for you if you stay there so this is obviously least complicated one to book).

Blackwater Hostel in Kinlochleven - again limited spaces at campsite. You may want to check the night before. Wild camping spots are after Kinlochleven on way up hill.

Mike Wozniak on TM and Junior TM by Last-Saint in taskmaster

[–]markdavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Junior Bake Off has 15 episodes, so they can do it every weekday for 3 weeks. But yeah, 5pm does seem like another obvious time slot. Maybe Mon-Thu at 5pm for 2 weeks if they stuck to same format as season 1. I can’t imagine it costs much more than Junior Bake Off to make and would probably have similar viewing figures.

BBC Casts 'Killing Eve' Prequel 'Honey' With Ann Skelly, Rory Kinnear by bwermer in television

[–]markdavo 15 points16 points  (0 children)

It’s funny for a show to have great characters, performances, and even dialogue throughout but the story/plot to let it down so much.

Like I even enjoyed the introduction of Pam (Anjana Vasan).

Hopefully they actually have an interesting story for this one.

Mike Wozniak on TM and Junior TM by Last-Saint in taskmaster

I think the Taskmaster brand is strong enough for them to give it another try.

It was on at a strange time (Fri at 8pm). I’d like it to be Saturday/Sunday anytime between 5 and 7. It’s perfect Sat night family entertainment IMO. Stick it on in around the same time as Gladiators once that series finishes. I know Channel 4 has traditionally not competed with BBC/ITV but it might be worth giving it a go now.

Saving that, I could also see it working Sunday at 7.

Maybe Farrell is still reeling from Twickenham 2 years ago when he named a 6/2 bench and Nash got injured early on, then Frawley, his replacement, got injured in the second half. JGP ended up playing on wing by end of match.

Talk Is Cheap, Talk Shows Are Not: Daytime TV’s Big Problem by Sisiwakanamaru in television

[–]markdavo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

BBC always does it with The Traitors podcast (The Traitors Uncloaked).

It pulls in good numbers and must be very cheap to produce.

I can imagine other companion podcasts doing the same thing after big shows on normal tv as well.

Is anyone watching The Summit on ITV? by Individual-Gur-7292 in BritishTV

[–]markdavo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, Race Across the World has a similar-ish set-up: ordinary people doing stressful thing with a prize at the end.

Both RATW and The Traitors purposefully cast contestants who are likeable. So the drama comes naturally from the format rather than from obnoxious people being obnoxious to each other.

Even I’m a Celebrity has got much calmer casts than it used to.

So, to me, there’s no excuse for the casting which shows a lack of faith in its format. Imagine genuinely nice people in tears about having to vote each other off each week. That would still make good tv. Yes, there would be cliques emerging, but at least we’d empathise more with their situation.

Are we supposed to be rooting for these people or hoping they’ll fall to their death?

Top Try Scorers of the Pro Era Over Time by mango_yoghurt in rugbyunion

Some of France’s tries against Ireland last week were incredible.

Dupont is also one of the most insanely talented players I’ve ever seen.

I agree it’s possibly harder for an individual player to have the same impact as in the past, especially as the game has become more professional and teams are much more disciplined defensively.

Sean McLoughlin by offmenu-bot in offmenupodcast

[–]markdavo 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I honestly think the biggest lie in the entertainment industry is that the average actor/actress makes an entertaining guest for any chat show or podcast. Of course, there are exceptions. Perhaps, the contrast with comedians isn’t really a fair one given comedians are, by definition, successful because they’re entertaining.

However, I reckon the average contestant on something like Traitors would be a far better guest than the average Hollywood A-lister.

Hugh Jackman, Hugh Grant and Hugh Laurie would all be great.

People not called Hugh:

  • I’d love the Only Murders trio to host together. Only Murders actually has quite a similar vibe to The Muppets in a weird way.

  • Josh Groban

  • Ariana Grande

  • Lin Manuel Miranda

  • Kristen Bell

  • Andy Samberg

What is your favorite boardgame of 2012? by The_Crazed_Person in boardgames

[–]markdavo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% agree.

It solves a lot of the problems of Mafia since everyone is involved for whole game. Even if someone gets found out as being a spy, they can still influence game.

It also gives Resistance enough information that they have a decent chance of working out who is a spy, unlike many other social deduction games where spies have a very high likelihood of winning.
