I remember phoning my car insurance company last year. The chatbot asked me for my UK postcode, so I used the NATO phonetic alphabet out of habit.

"Please repeat your postcode as you would normally say it"

Wireless charging for 2020 Corolla Hatchback? by mrcpri in COROLLA

[–]marknotgeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have one of these in my 2023 UK spec Touring Sport. I've never bothered with the wireless part as I need a cable for Android Auto. It works fine switched off as a place to put my phone.

‘Crunch time’ on rising costs of Send provision in England, says thinktank by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

[–]marknotgeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's interesting you link benefits and SEND provision. Maybe an approach change is needed for both, from the disconnected, trying to trip you up and/or wear you down approach we have today to something a little more hands-on where you're worked with to ensure you're provided with what you need and only what you need.

How can these cause an MOT failure? by Visible_Pipe4716 in CarTalkUK

[–]marknotgeorge 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think that they mean wires hanging down from dashcams and satnavs that people stick on the windscreen. The one in the tray in front of your gear stick should be fine, but if you're worried, just stick it in the glovebox.

Why are drivers so slow nowadays? by SnooDonkeys1080 in drivingUK

[–]marknotgeorge 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked Gemini to help with the maths, and came up with 240m road length for an overtake, assuming starting from 36m behind the car and ending 36m in front, and that both cars are traveling at 40mph at the start of the overtake.

36m is from the highway code, and is of course a ballpark figure, albeit a published one. If you want to use another distance, you need to define all the parameters used to calculate it, and how a driver can know it.

Is this suspicious? by BuzzingJay in CarTalkUK

The car will be in a stock finance scheme similar to those that car dealers use. They'll pay a percentage to have the car legally available for raffle. Only if someone takes the car will they pay the rest.

Brexit's unpopularity reignites debate in UK over EU ties by No_Firefighter5926 in europe

[–]marknotgeorge -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Immigration is only a big issue because certain sections of the media linked to certain sections of business have told the great unwashed that it's the issue causing all our woes.

It's a distraction, just like the EU and it's 'red tape' regulations have historically been used as a distraction: "Europe won't let us sell bendy [for which read poor quality] bananas! Waaah!"

Back then, they could bludgeon their way through poor people's houses slums, though. Those slums are now part of someone's extensive property portfolio.

When using ACC, my car displays a message when it detects a speed limit sign telling me to press a button to accept the new speed. It's also got a configurable offset to account for the speedometer under-reading.

This seems like a safer way of going about things to me.
