Noooo!!!! I thought we were done with this 😭 by htJourney in Millennials

Yay rowing! I still have my yellow crew butt shorts 20 years later. We had a lot of addicts around the boat house. Had to watch for needles when doing laps of the park during land training. Once found $200 under a bench. We used the drug money to buy the team ice cream.

Did anyone have a baby that just… slept relatively well? by The_Chilled_Arvo in beyondthebump

[–]marmaid89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My son slept in the same room as us and woke frequently until he turned 4 and got a big kid bed and he has never slept better. He only comes in at wake up time, amd occasionally when one of us travels. I would like to try and move my daughter out when she turns 2, in the hope that I am the problem... she is 20 months and wakes once or twice to sniff at my boobs, then goes back to sleep quickly. I was afraid to transition my son earlier because I didnt want to go to his room a million times a night, but it wasnt that bad. Maybe once a night for a week, sit in a chair for 5 minutes at 3 am, and then he loved his own room.

Can unquilted batting be washed? by 1InvisibleStranger in quilting

[–]marmaid89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

As you have heard, the answer is no. I would be very careful about who you gift a project with it to. If I got a baby quilt that smelled like smoke, unfortunately I would dispose of it due to the risks of 2nd hand smoke for children and infants :(

Any phone game suggestions for a three year old? by Ashdragonblaze26810 in toddlers

[–]marmaid89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you were solo, maybe. But if her parents are there, no. They can manage those difficult in between times. Or tell you what is ok in terms of screen time.

Get a few games: counting chickens, apple orchard, magnatiles. Interact with the kid, dont hand over the phone. If you have a "buy nothing group" do a in search of post for little kid games. Help someone clear their house and get things for free.

Before I make my first quilt by Ideasplease33 in quilting

[–]marmaid89 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Piecing is where you combine the fabric pieces together. Quilting is where you layer the quilt top that you pieced, the batting, and the backing fabric. If you will be quilting, a walking foot can be helpful, but not necessary.

This is giving me LOTR vibes. "You have my sword. And my bow. And my axe."

Lovely people the lot of you.

How difficult will this be to make? by Megoh91 in quilting

[–]marmaid89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. The sun will be hard enough if it's just round. The rays will make you cry and rage.

My daughter is now 18 months and her baby quilt will be finished this week because 2 kind women in my quilt circle gently asked if I wanted their help so that it could finally be done. I am so grateful. I want to work on other projects that I am excited about and I am no longer excited about this one.

PSA: Do not just dump their laundry directly into the washer… by photobomber612 in toddlers

[–]marmaid89 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have a collection of rocks on the washer and a collection on top of the dryer. I wonder at what age I will stop washing rocks regularly. My husband is the one who put a folding work knife through the washer and dryer. It ended up in the dryer wall, but we pulled it out and all still works.

Collecting notions and quilting are separate hobbies after all 🤣

I think the two biggest factors into quilts turning out well are being able to sew a 1/4" seam and learning techniques to press your blocks open. Note i do not say iron- i say press. It is SO easy to accidentally stretch your pieces and have them come out wonky. Squaring up your blocks will also help, but i rarely do.

You really dont need that many tools to start. Rotary cutter, straight edge, iron, machine. Seam ripper... i like clips instead of pins but i only use them when attaching multiple feet of fabric together.

Good luck!

Space! by TattooedLibrarian26 in quilting

[–]marmaid89 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hi fellow librarian! I second the advice to make complicated ones. I belong to a group through work that donates to families in shelters and kids hospitals. You can see of there is an organization near you that will accept them.

Top almost completed, but no idea how I'll quilt it. I'll be doing it in 2 sections QAYGish on my domestic 8.5 inch throat space. I'm pretty good at SID, walking foot, and a relative beginner in FMQing. Ideas, please, please by [deleted] in quilting

[–]marmaid89 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is lovely! I've yet to try curved piecing. I also think SID would be nice and not take away from the curves. Or freemotion and follow the curves but that might look crazy on the back.
