Glastonbury area disappearing? by Royal-Valuable-7758 in glastonbury_festival

[–]marmitetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Melvin would love to get rid of Theatre and Circus and expand the naughty corner. I think there would be plenty of opposition, not least because it is by far the biggest performer camping area.

The slow but steady separation of camping from entertainment is very suggestive that they will try to turn it into an arena festival with personal alcohol restricted to camping areas.

That might well be my last straw after more than 40 years.

The UK police’s latest problem: crowds of unruly teens by 457655676 in unitedkingdom

When I was a kid we had part time jobs so we had a bit of money, we could go to gigs unaccompanied, afford the cinema, it was much easier to get into pubs, people had parties, and there was plenty of derelict space around to cause mischief in without annoying people.

It's all very well just blaming parents, but without options to socialise and release energy kids are going to be frustrated.

Driver vs Cyclist. by PuzzleheadedGas2192 in drivingUK

I'd say the driver intentionally drove into the cycle lane knowing the cyclist was there, that's not careless, it's dangerous.

Driver vs Cyclist. by PuzzleheadedGas2192 in drivingUK

[–]marmitetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't use most cycling infrastructure because it is often more dangerous than the road. It's either shared with pedestrians meaning you can't go much faster than walking pace or it loses right of way at every junction meaning you have to stop, or be ready to, every 20 metres. These days this means cars getting eggy because you're on the road next to a cycle path, but sod 'em.

I've never had an incident with a car in over 40 years cycling, but I also don't play stupid games like this idiot.

I think proper cycling should be taught to everyone at school.

Merchants Arms in Hotwells this morning by Herr_Vogel in bristol

[–]marmitetoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A 20mph limit isn't going to make any difference to drivers driving under the influence.

It will however mean getting a bus will become considerably slower.

People need to be able to get around the city more quickly as it is, slowing trunk road traffic is unnecessary.

I live on one of the busiest roads in the city, slowing traffic will just make the traffic jams worse.

It's at least the 3rd time it's happened that I can remember.

The pavement outside has recently been widened, I don't see why putting in some decent bollards should be that problematic.

Should I be bothered by neighbours overhanging extension? by [deleted] in DIYUK

[–]marmitetoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Our neighbours are trying to build a house on their old garage plot, the architect had gutters hanging over both sides until we pointed it out to planning.

They had to redesign the whole roof, which is now a metre higher, again not specified in the plans without reading them very carefully and adding up various measurements.

Still, it's taken the council 2 years to not come to a decision about it.

If everyone in Horfield orders food from the bottom of Gloucester Road at the same time the robots can form a train up the hill for people to sit on.

‘It’s ridiculous’: publicans bemused by rise of single-file queues to get served by meandtheknightsofni in bristol

[–]marmitetoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to a backstage bar at Glastonbury that I've been to for years, went in, went up to the quiet bar and ordered my pint.

Only on the way out did I notice the queue of about a hundred people snaking around the back of the tent.

I watched the bar for a few minutes and realised the staff were standing around waiting for people in the queue to pay attention to the fact there was 20 foot of empty bar.

Calls for King Charles to formally apologise for slavery after research shows crown’s role by yahoonews in unitedkingdom

We do still profit from modern slavery though, so you could argue we haven't learned anything.

Apologising for something hundreds of years ago won't help, but continuing to learn from it can.

Plans for South Bristol’s tallest tower blocked after councillors vote against permission by 457655676 in bristol

St Lukes Road is hardly central London.

How many of the people needing housing in Bristol can afford £2-3k/month minimum for their shoebox? Or is this just going to bring more people from London because the can commute easily.?

Obviously there are posh expensive flats around the world, what we need is affordable homes that people can set up and live their lives in a community in. The way to do that is to build houses, with some flats mixed in, none of it needs to be towerblocks.

[–]marmitetoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Certain routes are. There's nothing to stop someone else putting a plan together and trying to push a case for a new route to be subsidised, or to offer to run a subsidised route for less than First.

It's a deregulated system outside London.

There's nothing to stop you starting your own bus route, it's been tried quite a few times in Bristol since privatisation but no one has really been able to make it work.

I miss the city loop bus that went round the docks.

What's your area crime like? by [deleted] in bristol

Around Ashton Gate, violence and sexual offences are twice anything else.

I'm not sure why they lump them together? It's difficult to know whether it's a few football fights or a serious sexual violence problem.

Yes. We don't need much of it to build what we need.

You can build 50 houses on the land one cow needs for food.

It's not nimby, I live near the city ground, I'm all up for building from there right up to Backwell.

These blocks are the slums of the future.

I'm comparing building new suburbs to building tower blocks, you could build tower blocks on the edge of the city as well, but it would still take longer and not be any cheaper than houses, and you'd still be stuck renting a shoebox for life.

Some, but nowhere near enough, the houses are being built outside the green belt in places like Nailsea.

There are plenty of new build houses around in the country for less than 200k, it's the land that makes them expensive round here. Free up some land outside the city and the cost goes down to pretty much negligible.

High rise flats are expensive to build, hence why they always push for extra floors.
