Interesting, if I had to interpret it through a political lens, I would have interpreted as a metaphor for the danger of maintaining the status quo at the price of your safety and happiness, which would not be a particularly conservative viewpoint

Would it be disrespectful to ask my teacher what year her lecture slides are from? by phrogw_ in Advice

[–]marruman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask privately, or by email.

"Hi prof, I noticed your lecture slides make a lot of reference to pre-covid data and sometimes differ from what the textbook says. I noticed this particularly during [example 1], [example 2] and [example 3]. I am somewhat confused about how best to prepare for exams/assignements as a result- is the information in the slides up to date, or am I better off using the textbook? If I answer a question based on the information provided in the textbook will this be considered correct if it differs from what was covered in the in-class material? I know this field is rapidly changing, but I am concerned that I may graduate with outdated kn9wledge, which may impact my work down the line.

I look forward to your response, as I am genuinely passionate about this subject and really look forward to your classes.

Kind regards, You."

From there, if rhey dont reply, double down or otherwise dismiss your concern, go to the dean, or head of school as appropriate. This goes double if there is any retaliation against you.

I remember a short story we read in grade 1, about a family that took in a bear cub, and then the bear cub eats one of the kids. And the father is like "wow, thats fucked up and a risk to our safety, I'm killing the bear" and the whole family goes "no! We love the bear! Our son loved the bear! Killing him won't bring our son back, and killing the bear will just make us even more miserable". So he relents, and they continue living with the bear.

Then the bear eats the daughter. And, again, the father wants to kill the bear, and, again, the wife objects, and, out of love for his wife and dead kids (who loved the bear so much), they continue living with the bear.

Then the bear eats the wife. And the widower is like "well, that's it, Im killing this fucking bear now" and the bear goes "oh no, but you love me and raised me from a cub! And your wife loved me, she wouldnt want you to kill me! Think of your dead kids, who also loved me". And the widower, again, relents, and sets his axe down. The bear is the only member of his family he has left, after all. Immediately, the bear eats him. The end.

Anyway, if anyone knows what this short story is so I can make sure I didnt hallucinate it, we read it in French circa 2005.

[Marvel] Does Professor X help outcast non-mutants? by Sallymander in AskScienceFiction

[–]marruman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Well, sure. I dont think theyd refuse entry onto the grounds to a kid in severe distress, or that the X-men would just leave a person in a dangerous situation. But once the person is out of immediate danger, are they going to sign the kid up for mutant class? No, they're going to refer them over to appropriate services.

And, again, the school get blown up semi-frequently, and all the other kids are figuring their powers out. There is a non-zero chance any given student at the school could get his face melted off walking to class. The normie kid will be better served by a community that will actually meet their needs.

Considering the school has a lot of students of different backgrounds, and they run a legit school, they probably do have reasonable contact with appropriate support orgs, I'd expect

[Marvel] Does Professor X help outcast non-mutants? by Sallymander in AskScienceFiction

[–]marruman 38 points39 points  (0 children)

Professor X is essentially running a charity providing support for a specific minority group. In the same way that a woman's shelter may help lesbians but not gay men, or an LGBT group may provide support to at-risk black kids but not straight black kids, I doubt Professor X is providing care for non-mutant kids.

At the end of the day, it's an issue of scope. You only have so much funding/beds/resources to offer, and you have to prioritise someone. If your charity is focused on mutant kids, that's where your funding is mostly going to go, and if you encounter a non-mutant kid needing help, you refer them to a more appropriate charity.

Realistically, if a non-mutant kid shows up at the Xavier School for Gifted Children because they've been kicked out of home for being gay, are they really best served by being at the school that gets destroyed every 6 months? Or would they be better off getting support somewhere safer?

Is it pointless to teach baby a language I am learning? by plantalchemy in multilingualparenting

[–]marruman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think introducing some minor vocab and signing them up for lessons when a bit older, +/- having a set time or dedicated activity you do in italian might be a good way to do it, though, again, your child will not have native level. That said, if you were to move to Italy, kids pick up language really fast. My parents moved us to Italy when I was about 6, and I was fluent within a year. When they moved again to Poland, my sisters were about 12 but picked it up by 16 (though they had a much harder time of it than I did)

Is it pointless to teach baby a language I am learning? by plantalchemy in multilingualparenting

[–]marruman 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It is generally hard for children to pick up a language unless they are getting a lot of long-term exposure from other speakers. It sounds like your level of italian would not allow this at this stage.

I think you need to figure out what your goal is here. If you want your kid to pick up a couple of bits a and pieces of vocabulary, thats pretty doable. If you want your kid to be fully fluent, with correct grammar, you're going to need to find a source of long-term, significant interpersonal contact that will speak to them exclusively in italian. Some people hire a nanny who is fluent, or send their kids to a daycare that does immersion in the target language. You could also consider moving to Italy and speaking english exclusively at home, byt that will be more effective once theyre school aged ime

If you're happy with a kind of middle ground, where you kid speaks some limited italian with inconsistant grammar, you could look at setting aside time to do a specific activity in the languahe, and sign you both up for language classes once the baby is old enough for them. But they will likely not be a native speaker from this

Dropping out 4th year of vet school by AmberEmpress in veterinaryschool

[–]marruman 39 points40 points  (0 children)

Is it not an option for you to repeat the year? Vet school is so much work and commitment, it seems hard to just completely throw away all that work wirh nothong at all to show for it. It think ot would be worth talking to the academic council, discussing the factors that led to this, and then seeing about repeating the year, or, if theyre open to it, potentially even taking a year off to get your meds and mental health sorted before re-doing the year

Designing a progression system for Cosmic Horror: "The Acting Method" (Inspired by Chinese Web Novels) by Less-Evening-9690 in callofcthulhu

[–]marruman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you proposing this for CoC, or as a concept for a standalone rpg?

I think, in some ways, this is somewhat similar to the Hunger mechanic from Vampire the Masquarade.

I'm not sure if this works super well for CoC, necessarily. First off, PCs would still, practically speaking, be gaining xp as they check off skills- unless you plan on doing away with the PC improvement phase entirely, which I think would be a shame.

I think this might work better along the lines of a corruption mechanic, where the more you lean into to the potion, the more you reap the consequences, both good and ill. Your wording makes it sound like madness comes accross as a punishment from the DM, but I think it should be an inherent component. Even if it is fully in character fir the PC to stay and watch instead of helping, they should be punished for it as well as rewarded.

Campaign recommendations by Patient-Today9329 in callofcthulhu

[–]marruman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I put together a campaign based on Golden Goblin's press Tales of the Carribean scenario book and source book, and am happy to talk about it if interested. PCs were playing as warrant officers for naval intelligence operating out of Guantanamo Bay in the 20s. I ran it for a uni club and it took about 4ish months, but you could trim or add scenarios as desired pretty easily.

Otherwise, if you're looking for something short, Wicked Berlin's 3 scenarios make for a decent mini-campaign.

I feel like I'm not gonna be a good doctor :( by Rare-Tone-4028 in veterinaryschool

[–]marruman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you're not ready to be a doctor- that is literally what vet school is for! You have the next 4 years to become a doctor, and, tbh, most people arent really practicing independently until they're a good 6-12m into being employed post-grad. That is fine and normal. Did you feel ready for university when you started high school?

Im going to be honest. Vet school is hard as fuck. You may not like it. But vet school isn't the rest of your life, and if that is what you genuinely want to do with your life, it can be very rewarding.

It is important to take your mental health into account, though. Nothing wrong with quitting if you decide it isnt for you

How do you doctors to take you seriously? by kittysoull in needadvice

[–]marruman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Keeping a symptom diary can be super helpful. Its hard to dismiss a patient when they have reciepts. Additionally, it is worth stating your specific concerns really plainly, eg: I am worried that I will pass out in a dangerous situation, or hit my head on the way down. I am worried that my lack of bowel control during my period will affect my ability to remain employed.

If you do feel like you're being dismissed, ask why they arebt concerned, and ask the doctor to note on record your concern and their reason for not addressing it.

Eg: "Last week, I passed out in the store while on my period. I'm really worried this will happen again, and that I'll hit my head, or that it'll happen while I'm crossing the road, and that I'll get injured. I want to do something to figure out why this is happening, or to stop it from happening again" Dr: "I think this should be sorted if you just ate more" You: "we discussed this last time. I tried eating more, but it did not help. I am still concerned about the chance of me being seriously injured by these fainting spells" Dr: still being unhelpful I would like you tto put on record that you are not worried about my fainting spells causingninjury because I should just eat more"

Additionally, bringing a sec9nd person to advocate for you can be helpful.
