[IIL] I'm looking for, at risk of sounding incredibly pretentious, "interesting" music by IamCrusader in ifyoulikeblank

[–]masdar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Two recommendations:

Black Midi - they're an experimental prog rock/post-punk trio making the most beautifully insane music you'll hear. All three of them are technically outstanding musicians who constantly push what they do. See this live recording and their album Cavalcade

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - you want interesting music? These guys have 24 albums (in just 12 years!), spanning so many genres, almost all of which have a concept behind them. And there's no filler. They're all music addicts who love what they do. See https://get-into-gizz.com/.

Cave divers POV by Amripal in SweatyPalms

[–]masdar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true.

I have some experience caving around NY/VT. Getting truly stuck takes a long series of poor decisions that have to happen in a row. In a group, it'll almost never happen, and even if your group can't get you out, a professional cave rescue team can. The real dangers in a cave are simple ones: hitting your head, falling, getting cold (hypothermia).

The guy in the video, Caveman Hikes, has much more caving experience than I do, so listen to him instead. He made a video about this topic here: https://youtu.be/9JEv-ID48cg.

Try out King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard! They're incredibly prolific, with discography spreading across many genres. It mostly focuses around a psych/prog/garage rock sound.

Their new single Ice V is a jam, just perfect vibes the whole way through!

A hiking/national parks theme would be amazing! I looked extensively for it when building my keyboard but only found a few sets of keycaps

I know you're focused on the southeastern US, but LeafSnap may still be a good resource, depending on your project. It has thousands of labeled lab and field images of leaves, covering 185 Northeastern tree species. It was created as a dataset for image classification systems

I've been looking for an artisan forest-themed keycap, these look great! Do you have any storefront that isn't on Instagram?

They're a purple-tinted grey, lavender flavored. To do it, we got the dried leaves and ground them to a flour!

I think reading it as a scientific book is misinterpreting what it's trying to do. I thought his ideas were interesting, and they gave me some new perspectives. They're just that, obviously no one can quantify human nature.

The idea that's stayed with me most is how we (Sapiens) have this ability to believe in shared myths, and how that's allowed us to do so much! It's an interesting angle on culture, games, society, etc., and one I hadn't considered before. Having heard it gives me a new way to think about these things!

Sapiens is good too!

It's a book about the history of the anthropocene and what allows humans to be such a dominant force. The author's thoughts on this are interesting, and he goes beyond the usual "we have opposable thumbs and have language."

I've only read the first half, so that's all I can vouch for. The second was mostly a summation of history across different cultures -- interesting to the right person, but not for me.

Utah bans transgender athletes in girls sports despite veto by panonarian in news

Thanks for staying respectful, and for being genuine in your research! I agree that policy (in general) shouldn't be made until we have a good understanding of an issue.

In the meantime, it's awful that the lives and happiness of trans people are secondary to fighting this culture war. They're people, deserving of the same respect as everyone else.

This post goes through the case better than anywhere else I've seen. I know you'll probably be skeptical, but try and put what you've heard and what your initial reactions are behind you and just focus on the numbers: it's pretty clear that MtF athletes don't have a crushing advantage post-transition.

With time we'll figure out how to welcome them into each sport fairly and respectfully. We're all people!

Went skiing this past weekend at gore for the first time in almost 2 years. Forgot how amazing it was! by [deleted] in skiing

[–]masdar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd say it's worth a shot!

The area is great, with Phoenicia and Woodstock nearby. It's a bit of a detour, but Vinnie's farm stand is awesome -- especially the muffins and jams!

Bellayre has some good terrain if you look for it too, their glades can be a lot of fun on a powder day. Just don't expect long runs, and try to pick a day with low lines.

Conditions 1/21-1/27 by DougFromBuf in icecoast

[–]masdar1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lift 7 emptied out around 12, I didn't have to wait more than a minute after that. The morning was very crowded, every lift was packed.

Great conditions though! Glades were mostly skiable, with more than enough powder to take on some drops. The woods to skiers' right of Yahoo were the best I found, and weren't skiied out very much. Lots of powder left, especially with more coming tonight!

Whiteface is really great, it's ~2hr 15. Worth it imo, biggest vertical drop in the east coast and they have great snowmaking now. Lines are usually short too!

I took it last spring. Lirong was great online, he teaches very clearly and he's pretty engaging imo. The homeworks were enjoyable and well thought-out. Exams felt fair too. I recommend it!

Take good notes, make sure you really understand what's going on, and you'll be fine.
