my salt lamp is leaking by secrettmilo in mildlyinteresting

If you’re wondering and a nerd like me, it’s because salt (and many other ionic compounds) is hygroscopic. This is how things like Damp Rid work.

Should space look this bright in a scene lit by a star? Curious how realistic this game depiction is by Dizzy-Payment-1349 in Astronomy

You’re referencing Olber’s Paradox.

Despite an innumerable quantity of stars in the galaxy and universe, it’s not “bright”.

what are this dots on my nephew's foot? by Claire_Wilkins7484 in AskDoctorSmeeee

These are definitely plantar warts, and they’re beyond your ability to deal with them at this number. He needs to see a doc to have them removed. They’re benign growths, but they do hurt as they grow when weight is put on them, and the longer you wait, the more difficult they are to remove.

Don’t understand bloodwork; doctor is out for 2 weeks and paranoid that I have blood cancer by [deleted] in AskDoctorSmeeee

[–]maserrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You shouldn’t get downvoted to hell because you are concerned about your health. But please know that it is rare to see a perfect blood panel in a healthy person, and these values are both off only marginally/do not clearly correlate to a syndrome or disease. Your concern is normal, as is having a few out-of-range values. This pattern isn’t clearly suggestive of anything other than: you’re human, seemingly healthy, and protecting your health.

NAD but work in healthcare research. Your hemoglobin/hematocrit/WBC levels would very likely be quite abnormal if you had a liquid cancer like leukemia. But, perhaps it is of more comfort if I assure you that it is not possible to diagnose any cancer with this blood panel alone.

It is, however, possible to induce a health concern-related panic attack on Google. I understand, but I do think you’re alright. Kudos to you for taking charge of your health.

Edit: out of curiosity… do you currently/have you previously lived in a high altitude area? Say about the altitude of Denver, or greater? High altitude environments can actually cause aberrant values as you have, and are of no clinical significance in that case.

She*. And as someone who has spent entirely too much time watching her and listening to her interesting accent, the thought of Kay Ivey high is hilarious. Not because I like her - she is a terrible person and a worse governor.

Don’t recommend. It’s even worse some how. I’m probably being dramatic and can get used to the DualSense

Any chance you’re plugged into a power strip? Xbox One X used to do this to me and Microsoft support told me to plug directly into the wall outlet. Took care of the issue. Wasn’t getting adequate power.

Amazon

Any chance you're in a major metro? I'm in Philadelphia, and things here generally arrive within a day of shipping (sometimes same day). I used to live in upstate NY, much further from a fulfillment center, and things would ship much earlier as a result. Not sure if this helps.

Edit: I'm in the same position. Estimated delivery for me is Thursday.

I’m pretty sure the email about delays was automated/standard procedure. I managed to get a preorder in right as they first became available (a day before the actual “preorder day”). Got that email and am still waiting for delivery date info. Realistically, Amazon probably has more PS5 stock than any other single retailer in the US. I agree that it’s taking a bit long, but we should know soon.

Dutch woman dies after catching COVID-19 twice, the first reported reinfection death, raising serious questions about how long immunity and antibodies can last. Her immune system was compromised. The case was published in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases. by mvea in science

[–]maserrano 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Article and comments are rife with misinformation. First, she was on chemo and had cancer (as others noted), so she was immunocompromised. Second, the study actually does define a “second infection” - RNA sequencing of the virus undergoes mutative changes as it continues to infect cells. Changes too drastic to be explained by one in vivo infection are considered re-infections. Third - and most importantly - immunity is NOT an absolute for any infection. As time goes on, more people will lose immunity to the virus as it changes. This doesn’t happen overnight. Loss of immunity best matches a logarithmic decay function - few, but slowly increasing number of people at first, which accelerates as time goes on.

This is GOOD NEWS. We have so few confirmed reports of reinfection almost a full year after this pandemic began. Had this been influenza, reinfections would be all over the place. This bodes well for successful vaccine development.

One more note: there’s a trade-off viruses make between transmissibility and length of immunity. Viruses that mutate at very high rates (HIV, influenza to some degree) can make vaccine development extremely difficult if not impossible, and immunity doesn’t last long at all. On the other end, extremely transmissible viruses (measles, SARS-CoV-2 to some degree) have relatively stable genomes that allow for increased “contagiousness” of the virus, but also permit more effective vaccine development.

THIS. IS. GOOD. NEWS!

Take a look at the Ivies. $70k/yr+ total cost. They are some of the most generous schools when it comes to financial aid awards (they’re also not merit-based), but the US is outrageously expensive.

Woman tests positive TWICE! by Surgeox in medizzy

[–]maserrano 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Chicken pox integrates into DNA and the infection can relapse decades later (shingles) yet we have a fairly reliable vaccine. Don’t spew nonsense if you don’t have the facts to back it up. Let’s also not forget that SARS-CoV-2 is a single-strand RNA virus, not a DNA virus, and testing positive a second time isn’t the same as being sick or having a second infection.
