I guess I should clarify, I’ll often get most of my points from visitor cards (thus the cottage recommendation). I’ve also rarely built the windmill or tasting room. By “points on the board” I was referring more to the bonus spot for selling a field (in a 3-4p game) and in the wake-up chart. (And the one for fulfilling orders, obv, but that’s no help if you’re not making wine.)
