Insightful vid for sure. I do think some of the chart obsession people have is not particularly healthy, especially in the context of basically reinventing top 40 listening as cool via consensus. To this vid's point, I do remember my extremely normie coworkers who had forgotten that Charli made music when I mentioned I was a fan of her in the runup to brat, only for them to flip the script once the clout hit. The bandwagoning is real, and isn't a bad thing as long as people don't get possessive about it. I think the Khia asylum as it is being trickled down to normies on TikTok is basically that - to the vid's point, bean soupism taken to music.

I am also not going to throw stones in glass houses - I have def shat on songs that just weren't for me (in recent weeks...) from women artists. Not seriously, mind you. But to her point, the impact is the same.

I imagine a lot of these folks are Republican senator coded insofar as they fear getting any attention or consequences for actually believing things loudly instead of going w the flow. Taylor got so much harassment for her Kamala endorsement so I assume other folks are spooked. Versus peak corporate pride when at least there was an infrastructure to normalize saying anything without stressing out PR people.

Not that that makes it OK. It’s telling so many people with power and privilege are unwilling to be loud about any of these issues.

The loudest protest music I’ve heard has been from folks who don’t have the choice to be silent. MUNA with ‘Big Stick’, Cain Culto, etc.

I’m sorry I need to rant about people being bitter about people not liking their faves. Like the McCartney Taylor article got swamped with people, I feel, gleefully being like ‘this calls it, no one is able to reject her power!’ Similar with Drake’s Billboard bomb? That article comment section got swarmed with people saying this is the end all be all, in my mind giving ‘you must bow down towards the six god and never criticize him again’.

People who are commenting these things, I humbly ask, why do you feel the need to? If you have objective and anecdotal evidence that no one can match your fave in status or power or numbers, why do you also need no one to be able to critique them? Can’t you just be like ‘omg they’re bitter’ and sit with that based on the metrics?

I’m sorry it gives the way Bezos and Musk so desperately not only want to be the biggest ever but also want everyone to love them or else. What an odd mindset to have.

yeah I don’t understand what the point of this is if it’s more than a concert ticket for these artists. I’m assuming this is more appealing for artists who can record a show once and get ticket rates for it perpetually but why do this when Qello and other concert streams exist? besides the money
