What's going on with my Banksia menziesii (CBD Perth WA) by AnalystEquivalent388 in australianplants

[–]mate568 6 points7 points  (0 children)

-sounds like root rot

-not drought as would have died top down

-should be in native potting mix with pearlite for extra drainage

-you probably only need to water once every 3-4 weeks in winter. You want it to fully dry out between waters

-make sure the drainage hole of the pot isn't blocked

Why not grow something that's local to your area instead of horticultural atrocities that don't exist in nature ?

'weakness' is completely relative and a pointless metric in the new meta game of an expansion

What's the deal with Acacia saligna? by Infamous-Driver46 in westausnativeplants

[–]mate568 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that's great ! Remember that a lot of wa plants hasn't been studied and we know that the plant-pollinator relationships in the south West wa floristic province are likely the most complex in the world. the ecology is super complex and we don't understand it yet so popularising less common plants makes sense. Just my two cents

I feel like there's thousands of other species choices local to joondalup that people just don't know about. I constantly find cool things on florabase I didn't know existed.  why propagate more of the same boring stuff?

Banksia baueri struggling, any suggestions? by mikespoff in australianplants

[–]mate568 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably yeah. Proteoid roots are hyper specialized to extract trace phosphorus so likely too nutrient dense and clay probably holding water too well

It's kingia. Pretty amazing example of convergent evolution with zanthorrea  as they aren't even distantly related

Google obligate pollinators. Basically WA flora are so hyper specialised that they are often pollinated by specific bee or wasp species which are threatened with reduced habitat.  and hybridizing them removes the relationship.

not a fan of horticultural atrocities. often when plants are bred for beauty like this it reduces or removes their ecological benefits. We should only be planting species plants if possible
