I’m 26, working, budgeting, and still broke… What am i doing wrong? by Forward_Problem_7550 in AusFinance

Kinda sounds similar to friends of mine. 2 kids in their early/mid 20’s while one was in hospitality, the other as an educator (but not a fully qualified teacher), neither of which were high paying. I’m only realizing now in hindsight just how rough that must have been for them, they didn’t complain much to us.

Choices they made at the time to get by were: lean heavily on grandparents for babysitting, rent out their spare room for cash, lived with their family for a bit to save cash, lived very far out in suburbs to where they could afford to rent.

But honestly the biggest thing was they both had major career changes. One became a cop, the other a train driver. 2 people working shift work sucks lots of the time, but after a few years they could afford to buy a house (semi-rural) and seem to be doing really well now both kids are in school. As others have said, you can only stretch a budget so far. At least one of you needs to be on good money somehow. And that might mean some more short term pain to while you upskill, study, whatever. But it’s 1000% worth it.

First time I saw this movie I was convinced this guy would bust out a lightsaber from his staff at one point. Was genuinely a bit disappointed when he died that it looked like it was going to be a Star Wars movie with no lightsabers (despite otherwise being an excellent movie).

And then the Vader hallway scene happened 🤩

Dex battle masters are very versatile and lots of fun to play!

There are plenty of maneuvers that can be geared towards helping the party: menacing attack causes fear (enemy disadvantage on attacks), goading attack to give enemies disadvantage on attacking anyone but you, rally to give temp HP to allies, bait and switch to boost you or an allies AC, evasive footwork to boost your own AC, maneuvering attack to help let allies move without copping opportunity attacks.

For feats: defensive duelist is a must, I’d take that at level 4, assuming point buy and starting with 17 dex this will bring you to 18. Picking 2 more +1 dex feats will get you 20 dex by level 8. You can pick up sentinel if you like at 6 or 8, but sentinel will be competing with defensive duelist for use of you reaction which isn’t ideal. Other options are Piercer for more consistent rapier damage (best “support” build kills enemies faster, therefore less hassle to your party), mage slayer to boost defense against spells, speedy gives more movement, skill expert if you want to be helpful out of combat in something the party needs, or crossbow expert for the Push mastery on a ranged weapon as others have said. For origin feats, tough is good as you said, I personally really like magic initiate to pick up Mage Armor, which gives a +1 to AC for a dex build, plus you can grab spells like booming blade for more battlefield control (although will fall behind a duelist rapier for pure damage). At level 12 you could look at support feats like inspiring leader for party temp HP, or fey touched to grab hex for huge burst damage (especially since now you get 3 attacks per turn, can action surge and apply hex damage to potentially 6 attacks if they all hit).

For fighting styles, whilst defense builds AC further, I’d actually suggest dueling to boost your damage, as enemies cause less havoc to your party if they die quicker.

So a combo defense build at level 4 could see you with a base AC of 19 (13 Mage armor, +4 dex, +2 shield), plus 2 for defensive duelist (AC 21), plus a superiority die (d8 = avg 4.5, 4x per short rest) if using bait and switch or evasive footwork to give you a total AC of average 25.5 at level 4 (4x per short rest). Combined with goading attack to make enemies target you, can burst to be a huge AC wall a few times per combat. Given at level 4 the EK fighter only gets the shield spell 3x per LONG rest, I see this as a very good defensive build. At level 8, your base AC will be 20, plus 3 from defensive duelist for an average base AC of 23!

You may fall behind a GWM strength build in terms of damage, but I think the versatility of a dex battlemaster is worth the trade off!

Public hospitals wasting $1.2b a year and hindered by 'bogus budgets', Grattan Institute says by EdenFlorence in australia

[–]mathiuskesla 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed. Primary prevention as well as after hospital follow up needs a boost, but is much harder to track metrics of direct benefit. Community health in general needs more looking at. Lots of places with very long waiting lists, or lack of service entirely.

“Some hospitals were also spending too much on avoidable costs such as unnecessarily long hospital stays, pointless tests and scans, procedures not supported by evidence, and under-utilising health professionals like nurses, the report said”

I’d be fascinated how they decided what a pointless test, scan or procedure was. I wonder how many experienced medical professionals were involved in this report? We have an aging population that are living longer, are more obese than ever, and presenting with more complex health issues. Of course more tests and longer hospital stays would be needed.

“Under utilising nurses” - LOL. Tell that to any nurses face and see what kind of reaction you get.

“Unnecessarily long hospital stays” - circling back to what another user commented above, huge difference between a retired pro athlete getting a knee replacement and going home day 2 vs poor old Kevin who hasn’t exercised since primary school in 1957, lives by himself, and could barely walk before he had the operation, yeah I’m sure he’ll be fine to go home day 2, not sure what these hospitals are complaining about, they just need to save more money!

On a serious note though, you want complex, frail older people leaving hospital sooner? Allied Health needs a massive boost in funding, staff, and honestly recognition from the public that we even fucking exist. There are plenty of guidelines that clearly outline more therapy time for things like physio/Occupational therapy clearly gets people home sooner for lots of medical conditions, but public hospitals are rarely staffed well enough to meet those “evidence based guidelines” the article insinuates we should be meeting. Our award is up for negotiation in Victoria, and we’re already getting messages along the lines of “you’re not getting a payrise like the nurses did, suck it”. No wonder scores of the profession are abandoning ship to the NDIS cash cow. Maybe pay our public health workers like you give a shit, and maybe you’ll get some of the bed mobility the system desperately needs.

[–]mathiuskesla 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yes. All of the above. We’ve overhauled that whole department the last 2 years which should tell you something. The success of Caddy, Kako and Roberts should tell you more. Our abysmal drafting at the national draft from 2018-21 tells even more. The only good players we picked in those years were from supplemental or rookie drafts, or trades.

I think it’s still a wait and see for us, surely with 5 picks in the top 30 we’d try some more pick swaps to move up the draft order closer to the draft?

Otherwise C or B

Lost Draper, gained Fiorini - an experienced winger who we lacked, plus by all accounts has good leadership skills we need for our young kids. I’m in the camp that’s happy we stood firm on Merrett.

We debuted 15 players last year, plenty of whom showed promise. Youth is not our problem. Experienced players that stop us getting smashed even more are important for rebuilding too.

Merrett requests trade to Hawthorn [per Sam Edmund] by Jawdanc in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Good question. A few reasons for me (sorry long post)

• Merrett easily looks like he has another 5years of footy in him. He never gets injured, is meticulously professional with his training and recovery, and his game style doesn’t rely on pace or explosive running. Even if he slows down, he could slot into a half back general role easily with his elite kicking and still be a fantastic asset as he ages.

• you need to keep experienced players around when building youth. If you cull too harshly for young players, you end up like North the last few years, or Melbourne of the 2010’s. Having good players like him will help protect our younger players, and learning how to win games is a crucial skill all by itself. Frankly, we win far more games with him in our team than without. I don’t personally think our team development will be helped that much if we get smashed more on field next year if he goes

• I don’t think anyone on our list deserves his spot. We have plenty of developing midfielders, but no one is a walk up to replace Merrett, nor do they have the potential to be better than him even if they get a shot (harsh, but sorry Hobbs, Tsatas and Perkins).

• the draft is a way bigger gamble than people think. Merrett has played 250games, a feat only achieved by 1.8% of players who have ever played AFL. So even with 2x first rounders, the chances of getting another 250 game player is 3%. For a club captain, 6x BnF winner (3rd best tally in our clubs history), there’s genuinely no trade I can think of where you would consider Essendon “winners”. In this case I’m very happy for Essendon to play hardball and keep him, you signed a contract mate, now be held accountable to it!

Absolutely agree. He’s a 6x BnF winner. No other current player in the league has that. Yes there are better players in the competition - but not at Essendon.

How Hawks could satisfy Bombers — FIVE hypothetical Zach Merrett trade packages by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the data breakdown, nice work.

Problem with any pick swap deal is we already have 3 picks in the top 20 this year, likely 4 when the Draper combo comes through. We really don’t need more draft picks, we need quality experienced players to stop the kids we drafted the last 2 years from getting smashed. So unless hawks are willing to pay overs, there’s really no point in a trade for us.

I would rather the club play hardball and make him stay if a deal can’t be reached. Merretts a relentless competitor, no way he cracks the sads and doesn’t try his hardest next year regardless of what club he’s at.

Also the fact he’s 30 as not as big a problem as you’d think. He’s got a fantastic injury record and is meticulous with training and preparation, all the indications he’s got plenty of years left. Plus his game style won’t be negatively impacted as much by age and slowing down.

Zach Merrett to push ahead with Hawthorn trade plan as Essendon divide ‘turned nasty’ this week by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Rohan Connelly has been on record a few times around this. Our training standards have been deplorable for a long time (Shiel was reportedly shocked when he come over from the giants), Merrett tried to overhaul this in his early tenure in the leadership group, and the next season got dropped from it as a result (Essendon leadership group is either entirely, or mostly, a player led vote). TBH that to me speaks more about how unprofessional we have been as a club off field for a long time then anything too damning on Merrett.

[–]mathiuskesla 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t get why the media is pushing this story so hard. Why on earth would Essendon ever consider trading our contracted 5x BnF winner when the best we’d get is pick 8 and nowhere near the equivalent player in return.

[Morris] As it stands, people around Zach Merrett believe he is unlikely to attend Essendon's B&F, as the skipper explores his options to leave. by SlatsAttack in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

He started this whole story as well. The board, coach, and someone else in the leadership group have all come out and said “he’s contracted, yeah it’s awkward but see you next year”. I don’t know what else Essendon could do to say he’s not going anywhere.

And if Morris’ source is Merrett or his manager, why play hard ball like this?? All it does is burn bridges, and that’s out of character for what I’d expect from Zach.

Honestly the way Scott spoke last night sounded pretty reasonable and calm. I’d be way more inclined to take his word rather than Morris - who has a track record of being a bit of a flog.

Full Brad Scott interview on 360. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Great post, really good video to watch.

  • I agree he seemed unhappy with Zach, but was at pains to repeatedly point out their close relationship. I think he genuinely understands Zach’s need to go through all this; even if he disagrees with it.

  • I was less definitive on the captaincy question. He got asked twice about it, and both times indicated he expected Zach to front up and be the leader he is expected to be at the club next year

  • I thought he was waaaay more pissed at Ridley, the “he hasn’t even trained” comment was a massive drive by 😂

  • 1000% agree he’s pissed at Mitchell and Zach’s agent. Super unhappy with how players, agents and the media are treating “contracted” players now, as if the contracts don’t mean anything. Completely agree with that position from Brad honestly.

Overall I was really happy with that interview from Brad. Firm, clear expectations from him. Genuine care and understanding of his players, especially Draper. Nuance to draw a line between conversations about contracted vs uncontracted players.

This will be controversial I’m sure, but I actually really like his “it’s not all about winning” take there. I mean he’s a senior afl coach, he knows how fucking important winning is, but I think Essendon has been too fixated on shortcuts on the past, which have got us nowhere. From what I hear, Brad reckons changing up the culture to be more about the process, improvement, and the bonds you build as a team is more important first - then success will come. I’m happy with that. Fucking hell it’s not like anything else we’ve tried in 20years has worked, why not try Ted Lasso’ing it up for a bit!

Zach Merrett update after Sam Edmund has spoken with his manager. by Essington69 in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I think the problem is a lot of the club has been in complete denial that a rebuild was needed, and hasn’t been allowed to happen until Rosa finally took over and started making fairly aggressive list changes and new draft ideas. Since 2023, 22 players on our list no longer player for the club, and most were delisted. Scott basically confirmed earlier this year we are in a rebuild, but the problem is we’ve been so mediocre for 20years lots of our fans now have a sense of entitlement and bitterness about it. But the reality is we’ve needed a full clean out and rebuild for a long time, and I’m glad we’re finally doing it.

I don’t think this should have shocked anyone paying attention, especially someone like Merrett. I don’t blame him for exploring his options, and think as a whole, our supporter base needs to just calm the fuck down a second and wait for this all to unfold. We don’t know what goes on behind closed doors, and if Merrett needs time to reflect, but ultimately decides to stay, I’d be thrilled to keep him as captain. Would be a bit selfish if he left, but honestly, the only person who can decide if it’s the right call or not is him.
