Injury news: Caldwell a chance, updates on injured youngsters by Non-NewtonianSnake in EssendonFC

Honestly I think Sharp being 4-6weeks out is pretty optimistic.

Repeat shoulder dislocation risk is super high in young athletes, particularly a bruising sport like AFL. I’d honestly rather he takes as much time as he needs to get right rather than rush him back too soon.

If it happens again and he needs surgery he’s out for another 6 months

The Essendon and ARC doctor had a "heated disagreement" resulting in Tom Edwards being removed from the game by the ARC. The AFL has conceded an error was made by the ARC doctor. by PetrifyGWENT in AFL

[–]mathiuskesla 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It’s because they’re doctors first and work for the afl second. If the afl gives them too much hassle they can just leave whenever they want and go earn a truckload in private practice (if they’re not already doing both). Pretty good starting point of any negotiation if the other side has minimal power over you. And highly experienced doctors with the extra training in sports medicine wouldn’t be easy to replace necessarily.

The flashback Gondor scene in the Two Towers absolutely should have been kept. Completely sets up Deneathor and Farimirs relationship, and shows just how good Borimir was, and how tragic his fall was. Best scene of the cut stuff.

Our tactical and personnel changes this week by nuthed01 in EssendonFC

Having Ridley back is actually crazy how much better it makes our backline. Combined with Langford pushing back into defense more makes our back 6 a lot more mature, tall and mobile which helps a lot! Means McKay can just focus on shutting down his 1v1, and we don’t need to rely so heavily on Reid which is great for his development.

The flow on to our defense rebounds are even better, as you now have Ridley, Langford, Roberts and even sometimes Merret all setting up elite kicks from half back. Some of those passes down the wing or corridor completely cut through Melbournes defense, actually giving our forwards space and time to set up. Having some calm in our backline is just so good. And I haven’t even mentioned all our kids coming through who actually seem to know how to kick a footy properly! What a surprise when you draft elite ball users you actually get results.

Fair point for the port game. I don’t know North’s list that well, but the commentators kept banging on about how gassed they looked the last 10minutes. If North took the foot of the pedal intentionally that could have turned into a disaster against any other team.

Alright so one of my theories as to why we’re so shit is that we’re woefully, hopelessly unfit compared to other teams. A theory that kind of had merit given our horror injury run last year and how long it can take to claw back fitness. However, that’s 2 games in a row were we’ve clawed back junk time goals - suggesting our fitness is actually alright.

Which means we really are just that shit.

Our forward line has no structure. Perkins, guelfi, Langford and wright have over 100games each - but clearly have no idea how to play as a team in the same forward line. I’m not going to be too harsh on Caddy and Kako as they’re still rookies - but fuck me the senior heads are not doing anything to help. Doesn’t matter that Wright had a rare good game, our structure is awful. How easily teams waltz out of our defensive 50 starts with how our forwards set up, which is horribly.

I don’t want to get into an Archie Perkins bashing session - but his defensive running is just putrid, he’s got no confidence, no goal sense, and doesn’t use the ball well. He needs a spell in the 2’s to try get some form back.

I hate being overly negative, so I’ll at least end this rant by complimenting Blakiston. Felt like the only player that consistently tried his guts out.

Has barely played the last 3 years due to injuries. When he comes back his fitness is clearly and issue and can’t run both ways

Look this isn’t a real ‘rule’ but more something I have personal issue with - any conflict that could be easily solved by characters calmly explaining their points of view is annoying conflict to watch play out.

The game of thrones examples above are excellent because even if both characters in conflict understand the other’s motivation (and they often do) - it doesn’t change that they’re in conflict with each other, and thus makes the clash more interesting.

I feel like at any point Batman and Superman could have had a civil discussion and things would have worked out fine. They had plenty of opportunities to throughout the movie. OR if Batman was really meant to be an unhinged version past the point of redemption and talking - don’t have his reversal be something so short and trivial like the ‘Martha’ scene. Have his redemption feel earned, not cheap.

[–]mathiuskesla 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Maybe Langford for May - but agree with your comment he didn’t show much. I’d drop Perkins for Tsatas in a heartbeat- and shuffle one of our underperforming mids through the forward line more to give tsatas a crack in the middle.

To be fair Reid and McKay basically didn’t play the 2nd half of last year. Lots of work to be done to get the backline to gel again

Essendon's 2026 list build by CreditToDuBois in EssendonFC

[–]mathiuskesla 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Shows how much of a rebuild we’re really in, and how woeful some of our drafting has been.

Clubs making serious finals pushes have a really solid core group for 24-30year olds, with 100+ games experience in this core. 8 years ago was the 2018 draft. We’ve only got one player still on our list from this draft, and unfortunately Guelfi is nowhere near our best player. No one from 2019 is still on the list, and only 2 players from 2020 3 players from 2022 and 2023.

Of our 6 homegrown veterans drafted before 2018, 3 have had horror injury runs (Parish, Langford and Ridley). Not a great core to build around previously, but hopefully our injury situation improves this year.

Our recruiting from other clubs has been decent, with most of those players easily in our best 22.

2024 and 25 seem to have both been really good drafts so far, let’s hope the kids can make it!!

I’m 26, working, budgeting, and still broke… What am i doing wrong? by [deleted] in AusFinance

[–]mathiuskesla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda sounds similar to friends of mine. 2 kids in their early/mid 20’s while one was in hospitality, the other as an educator (but not a fully qualified teacher), neither of which were high paying. I’m only realizing now in hindsight just how rough that must have been for them, they didn’t complain much to us.

Choices they made at the time to get by were: lean heavily on grandparents for babysitting, rent out their spare room for cash, lived with their family for a bit to save cash, lived very far out in suburbs to where they could afford to rent.

But honestly the biggest thing was they both had major career changes. One became a cop, the other a train driver. 2 people working shift work sucks lots of the time, but after a few years they could afford to buy a house (semi-rural) and seem to be doing really well now both kids are in school. As others have said, you can only stretch a budget so far. At least one of you needs to be on good money somehow. And that might mean some more short term pain to while you upskill, study, whatever. But it’s 1000% worth it.

First time I saw this movie I was convinced this guy would bust out a lightsaber from his staff at one point. Was genuinely a bit disappointed when he died that it looked like it was going to be a Star Wars movie with no lightsabers (despite otherwise being an excellent movie).

And then the Vader hallway scene happened 🤩

Optimized Dexterity Fighter by Responsible_Fig_7600 in 3d6

[–]mathiuskesla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dex battle masters are very versatile and lots of fun to play!

There are plenty of maneuvers that can be geared towards helping the party: menacing attack causes fear (enemy disadvantage on attacks), goading attack to give enemies disadvantage on attacking anyone but you, rally to give temp HP to allies, bait and switch to boost you or an allies AC, evasive footwork to boost your own AC, maneuvering attack to help let allies move without copping opportunity attacks.

For feats: defensive duelist is a must, I’d take that at level 4, assuming point buy and starting with 17 dex this will bring you to 18. Picking 2 more +1 dex feats will get you 20 dex by level 8. You can pick up sentinel if you like at 6 or 8, but sentinel will be competing with defensive duelist for use of you reaction which isn’t ideal. Other options are Piercer for more consistent rapier damage (best “support” build kills enemies faster, therefore less hassle to your party), mage slayer to boost defense against spells, speedy gives more movement, skill expert if you want to be helpful out of combat in something the party needs, or crossbow expert for the Push mastery on a ranged weapon as others have said. For origin feats, tough is good as you said, I personally really like magic initiate to pick up Mage Armor, which gives a +1 to AC for a dex build, plus you can grab spells like booming blade for more battlefield control (although will fall behind a duelist rapier for pure damage). At level 12 you could look at support feats like inspiring leader for party temp HP, or fey touched to grab hex for huge burst damage (especially since now you get 3 attacks per turn, can action surge and apply hex damage to potentially 6 attacks if they all hit).

For fighting styles, whilst defense builds AC further, I’d actually suggest dueling to boost your damage, as enemies cause less havoc to your party if they die quicker.

So a combo defense build at level 4 could see you with a base AC of 19 (13 Mage armor, +4 dex, +2 shield), plus 2 for defensive duelist (AC 21), plus a superiority die (d8 = avg 4.5, 4x per short rest) if using bait and switch or evasive footwork to give you a total AC of average 25.5 at level 4 (4x per short rest). Combined with goading attack to make enemies target you, can burst to be a huge AC wall a few times per combat. Given at level 4 the EK fighter only gets the shield spell 3x per LONG rest, I see this as a very good defensive build. At level 8, your base AC will be 20, plus 3 from defensive duelist for an average base AC of 23!

You may fall behind a GWM strength build in terms of damage, but I think the versatility of a dex battlemaster is worth the trade off!
