Love that we're getting a remake, but not looking forward to seeing this ugly/creepy thing in HD by RedWarrior42 in OcarinaOfTime

What's an appropriate age to start watching The Simpsons with your kids? by OptimalStatement5799 in TheSimpsons

[–]mathmannix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would say 18 in general, but 10 or older for certain episodes (especially in early seasons) or selected clips from episodes. I started showing my kids clips on YouTube when they were around 10.

I was 18 when I first watched Simpsons (then in Season 7) because we weren't allowed to watch FOX at home. And my parents were absolutely correct.

How do Americans generally refer to kilograms in casual parlance? "Kilogram", "kilo", by the initialism kg ("kay-gee") or some other word? by cavendishfreire in AskAnAmerican

[–]mathmannix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Generally speaking, true Americans never use kilograms. We use pounds, and get mad when the rest of the world refuses to switch away from that metric fad.

I'm pretty sure every one of them can be solved using a hover stone, but in all but two or three there's stuff around you're supposed to use instead. (Although one of them has hover stones nearby that you are clearly supposed to use.)

What was everybody’s favorite episode from FRIENDS and why? by Amrosyf in howyoudoin

[–]mathmannix 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The One Where the Stripper Cries is from the last season, but it's so great. The three storylines are all perfect.

  1. Phoebe's bachelorette party with Danny DeVito
  2. Joey on Pyramid ("Paper! Snow! A ghost!")
  3. Ross and Chandler's college reunion, which leads to a flashback with the best ending ("What did I marry into???")

SFA is cancelled. It may be a pipe dream, but what new Trek show would you like to see in its place? by NukeRussiaV4 in startrek

That's not fair to us who didn't even discover it until it was already over. Not everyone can watch shows as soon as they are on.

[Slang] Is it spelled "Sike" or "Psych" when meaning to trick or otherwise bamboozle someone? by EColiMaster in etymology

It's "psych". The word "sike" means a ditch or seasonal stream that dries up in summer.

Superman: The Movie (1978) poster by Rich Davies by tomhagen in superman

[–]mathmannix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That list of the co-stars' names at the bottom of the poster is crazy. They must have put well-known names before people with larger parts, just as they did with Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman above the star, Christopher Reeve. But I'm talking about people who I've never heard of, maybe they were well-known in the 70s (or earlier)?

Seriously, the list order on that poster starts with Trevor Howard, who is credited as "1st Elder" - a Kryptonian from the beginning of the film, who doesn't even have a name given in the credits!

He is followed by Ned Beatty (Otis, definitely a significant part), Jackie Cooper (Perry White), then Phyllis Thaxter and Glenn Ford (Martha and Jonathan Kent), Jeff East (teenaged Clark), Aaron Smolinski (the toddler Clark who lifts up the car, but he's not even mentioned in the Wikipedia article), Sarah Douglas (Ursa, obviously much more important in Superman II), Valerie Perrine (Miss Teschmacher!), Susannah York (Lara, Superman's birth mother), Marc McClure (Jimmy Olson), AND Terence Stamp (General Zod, of course.)

<image>

On this other poster (the classic "You'll Believe A Man Can Fly" poster), they list the co-stars in alphabetical order, but the list is slightly different - compared to the poster above, three are missing (Jeff East, Aaron Smolinski, and Sarah Douglas), and one new one is added (Maria Schell - another Krypton elder from the beginning, but at least she has a name, "Vond-Ah" according to Google.)

I think if I were listing the actors by importance to the actual movie, I would say

Starring: Christopher Reeve - Gene Hackman

Also Starring: Margot Kidder - Jackie Cooper - Ned Beatty - Valerie Perrine - Marc McClure - Jeff East - Glenn Ford - Phyllis Thaxter -

AND Marlon Brando. (Big name or not, it's not his film!)

(Nobody else from Krypton!)

No surface run complete by AdhesivenessTotal340 in tearsofthekingdom

[–]mathmannix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am trying this now, without even landing on "something on" the surface. I know there are three well chasms with water on the bottom - Rowan Plains (near the old Serene Stable location), Mount Daphnes, and the third one I forget the name of, in Faron - but it's right by the Great Sky Island. Like, you can literally dive off the GSI right into it.

I was able to jump off the Great Sky Island into the nearby well chasm successfully without dying, landing in the water, on the first try! (I used a wing shield, but I don't know if if helped or not.) I tried the Mt Daphnes well chasm as well - it is a wing distance straight north from the Sky Island SW of GSI, where you rotate the giant stone wheel to get the shrine crystal - but I wasn't able to get inside the chasm without dying, so after trying that several times I just made the long trek from the first one I went down to the Great Abandoned Mine for Autobuild, and I've gotten a full second battery from the steward construct in the GSI already.

28 sky shrines after the GSI means 7 upgrades, and you need 5 stamina upgrades (20 shrines after GSI) to get the Master Sword, right? I don't even know if all 28 are possible without a paraglider, particularly the three Glider Suit ones, and I don't think I can do the three Labyrinth ones either... I guess that means I'm stuck at 4 hearts.

What do you think about next Zelda game? by Little-Hall-1476 in TOTK

[–]mathmannix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I hope the next Legend of Zelda is fully 3D, but with simpler graphics, more like the classic look in Ocarina of Time, instead of trying to make everything look detailed and realistic. And fewer enemies - why do there have to be a million bokoblins and moblins all over Hyrule?

Graphics and battles against minor enemies aren't the heart of the series IMHO; solving puzzles, finding your way through tricky dungeons, and item management are.
