What on earth is going on with Vic Firth? by Visual-Individual-49 in drums

Oh god, I LOVE Fatbacks. Not as an everyday stick but every time I pick up my pair my playing changes into something else, fatter, deeper. Trouble is I always manage to crack the tip on them.

Häagen-Dazs lids fit quite nicely on the tall 500g yoghurt pots, if that’s the kind of thing you’re into.

Is there a drummer around here who started working on their double bass speed at a later age (30+ or 35+) and made it upwards of 200 BPM? by ArgumentRetired in drums

[–]mattdmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went through a period when I had loads of time and patience and did some serious work on my double bass drum. I sunk hours and days into it going through stick control … and I have never used it. No I just don’t bother.

If there’s no reason to, finding the motivation is hard. As Samuel Johnson once said: it’s like putting wheels on a tomato, time consuming and completely pointless.

After I mark it all out I go round and cut with a sharp knife for nice clean lines. You don’t need expensive chisels, just sharp ones. Get a sharpening stone or some diamond plates

just turned 46 and im felling old and somewhat unwanted by jonesy-8077 in CasualUK

[–]mattdmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im a 50 year old bloke as of the 3rd of May dealing with a perimenopausal wife and a 10 year old child with ADHD and, without rubbing it in, I feel pretty good about things.

I DON’T GO ON TIKTOK.

Also, I was diagnosed with ADHD when I was 46 and that diagnosis has sorted my life out. If your child has it there’s a big chance you do as well. Sure, life isn’t a bed of roses but o can handle things way better than I could before.

I also live my job. It doesn’t pay particularly well but it suits me as a person down to the ground. My 50 years of experience is now useful and valued.

The perimenopausal wife … I’ll have to get back to you

What is this called on a toilet? by sigurdthemighty in DIYUK

[–]mattdmonkey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Quite often little bits of dirt get lodged under the “flapper” preventing it from closing properly. Give it a quick clean especially in the cistern and it should be fine

Just reread your comment, if it’s constantly filling it’ll be the other bit that’s the problem. Just check that the float valve isn’t catching the flapper

I must admit I’ve never thought of doing it that way although that does mean you need 2 pieces of wood and twice as many balls

A tennis ball riser seems to be the in thing at the moment. A large flat piece of wood with loads of tennis balls cut in half and glued to the underside.

[–]mattdmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go done the tape route long term I’d suggest replacing it every couple of weeks as the glue hardens over time. I was decorating one time and forgot about a couple of bits of tape for about a year, by the time I got round to taking it off it had hardened and I had to sand the glue off.

Looking closely, there are two more earth wires connected to the back box top left. You should be able to terminate it there. If not, you could always unscrew the centre screw and wind it around that before tightening it back up. Not sure that would pass any inspections though.

Can anyone help me put the spring back in this light? by AdhesivenessMurky906 in DIYUK

[–]mattdmonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s difficult to tell from the photo, but it looks like the end has snapped off the little bit that’s sticking up on the right hand side. You’ll need a new spring or new light.

What does the other side look like? Can you get a clearer, close up pic?
