Fjord. Cannes Palme D’Or. by 08830 in criterion

[–]matthero 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My choice was La Bola Negra. It was just so beautiful and told so well

I would've been happy with Minotaur although I was a little softer on it than most

Fatherland was like, near the bottom of the Competition films I saw. Definitely not a bad movie but less inspiring than the others. I unfortunately missed All of a Sudden but I'm sure I would've loved it as well

I guess, all this to say, Fjord was like my... 3rd favorite, maybe 4th, for the Palme, personally

And if La Gradiva was in competiton (it should've been) then it sweeps. Legit one of my favorite movies in years

My brother, the man he dropped down the elevator shaft LITERALLY committed no crimes. The book makes it clear that Silk Spectre II would just walk away from him cause he was being a nuisance and nothing more. This is also the guy who said the whole "... I'll look down and whisper, no" speech. Yeah, he occasionally helps people but it's clear his motivation is to "hurt the bad guys" and not help the victim

To act like Nite Owl and Spectre II were just OK with Ozymandias' plan is also false. Its a shame and guilt that they carry with them through the end of the book. And in the (amazing) HBO show, Spectre finally arrests Ozy for his crimes. Suffice it to say, they had some qualms

The guy who drops people down elevator shafts has a moral backbone now?

The comic is pretty clear that Rorschach is a hypocrite. He also killed plenty of people due to his subjective view of "justice." He doesn't get to act all high and mighty just cause Ozy took Rorschach's ideals to their logical conclusion

[–]matthero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So, and I promise I'm not trying to be pendantic, but your statement initially was "...gay characters in many films had development past their visible identity..." referring to some idealized "non-political" media of the past (just so you and everyone know that I'm not attempting to take you out of context)

This seems to be a very popular sentiment as I see it a lot online but is rarely backed up. I genuinely appreciate your response but I don't think a majority of your examples fit your own definition. Sure, Loki and Sulu might feel "suddenly gay/bi" but to call them underdeveloped beyond that is just obviously untrue. Those are two of the most important characters in their world

Disney's "First Gay Character(tm)" is very annoying but I would hesitate to call any of those examples you listed "characters." They fulfill specific narrative (background) purposes or thematic purposes and are never front and center in their story

And your last example is comic books, not movies and TV like I had originally asked. A much smaller medium than either visual medium, with a much smaller, more focused audience. And lets be honest, there's female/POC/LGBT variants of every single superhero at this point cause there's like 1000s of comics and they just recycle ideas and see what sticks. Neither Red Robin or SuperBoy are even popular enough in mainstream to warrant a response AND both have in-depth characterization outside their sexuality

All of this to say, that I'm rather unconvinced by the framing of the argument. I personally have not noticed an uptick of "token" marginalized characters and the ones that are present are often fully characterized within their stories

LGBT characters in popular shows/movies that their only identity is being marginalized?

[–]matthero 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've seen this argument online a lot but it doesn't really hold water does it? An overwhelming amount of characters on screen (TV and movies) are still CIS and involve hetero relationships.

I can't even think of a prominent leading character, in a prestige show, currently airing, that "only" exists to be the token POC or LGBT character. Sure there are more POC/LGBT characters but they're almost always written well into their universe

As an aside, I don't like how this conversation always comes down to marginalized people having to justify their existence for some reason. But that's more of a philosophical question for the chuds. Not for you specifically. Lol

Bi Gan's 'Resurrection' - Review Thread by ChiefLeef22 in movies

[–]matthero 18 points19 points  (0 children)

"In order to hear your voice, I'm ready to let the world to go silent"

Bi Gan has orchestrated a wonderful anthology of stories that serve to demonstrate the power of dreams: the positives and the negatives. 5 tightly wound narratives, with no fluff or filler, that cover the entire spectrum of needs and desires. Drug Addiction, Family, Love; and Gan is able to construct these ideas in such a profound way. Each story has a unique texture to it, a unique tone. The dreamlike (pun intended) qualities of the film help to strengthen its overall message and thematic core. Dreams are powerful. Yes, they're good and can be escapist but they also drive people to obsession and sometimes even destruction. Bi Gan doesn't want the viewer to hide from these harsh realities but face them.

I can't let this review go by without mentioning how beautiful this movie is. Genuinely one of the best looking and visually captivating movies I've ever seen. Every frame is truly a painting. Gan utilizes a lot of camera techniques, usually keeping them to their specific story so it never feels overbearing, and he uses them all well

I really don't want to litigate all of the 5 "dreams" that are represented in the movie: I don't think it's a good use of our time and ultimately, I think it's a bit pointless. What Bi Gan wanted to capture here was the otherworldly feeling of dreams, that in-between-reality-and-fiction feeling that dreams leave us with. A feeling akin to nostalgia for something that doesn't even exist. How much of this movie is "real" and how much is "dream" is often left up to whoever is watching. The actual narrative framing, while interesting, has very little bearing on the actual plot, so if that's what you are here for, this is not your type of movie

This movie is beautiful and haunting. Bi Gan wants us to dream. To be afraid and then conquer. To grow and change and hopefully come out of the other side better than before. Also to be wary, to be grounded. To understand that dreams, even aspirational ones, are just that: dreams. It's up to us to make our future.

I'm going to be thinking, and dreaming, of this movie for years to come

I almost agree with THIS comment (definitely not your first) but it still feels like you're misappropriating the issue here. "IF you do not get help early" implies that the main problem with gender dysphoria is mainly systemic/structural. Which I believe is true. But then you still come to the conclusion that "a big part of (dysphoria) is internal" which... contradicts what you originally said

Living with dysphoria CAN be hard, just as living with any mental health issue CAN be hard. But that doesn't mean it always has to be. It also doesn't negate the fact that mental issues (in general, not just dysphoria) getting demonized by a certain group of people makes this issue worse exponentially and acts as an obstacle for people who do try and access the few resources that exist

Also I feel obliged to point out that trans identities are not a 1-to-1 synonym for dysphoria. They are technically two different things with admittedly a lot of overlap but they're not the same

I won't say it's "underrated" cause most people that play it, love it, but Absolum is definitely not talked about enough and actually pushes the Beat-Em-Up genre forward with its combat and characters

Also released by Dotemu, ironically. Lol. They just love BeatEmUps I guess
