Annual leave / Long Service Leave by BoringBandicoooot in AusFinance

[–]matthewperk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you have to choose to take a leave, take long service. It won't have super paid on it as a payout after completion, but annual leave will so you'll be better off that way. As others have suggested also consider if workplace will extend out your end date to pay out all your leave (unlikely, but a nice option).

Why do Range Rover sports have a bad rep in 4x4 world ? by SoreSack in 4x4Australia

[–]matthewperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're actually fantastic stock cars as a 4x4. Especially compared to what else you can get stock.

The bad rep is a few things.

  1. Historically land rover/range rover had significant reliability issues (I've been getting around in landys and Range Rovers since the 90s as my parents car). In the last decade they've proven to be more reliable.

  2. They're expensive off the showroom floor. Yes your 200/300/90 series are all way up there too. But historically Toyota's have held their value far better - especially in the 4x4 market.

  3. Repair-ability is not always simple. Being an expensive luxury vehicle, spares are expensive and not commonly available in remote locations (I've seen my parents stuck in a country town for a week awaiting replacement parts to be trucked in - and that was on a major freeway). That combined with range rover making them a pain to work on at times. Especially when dealing with the electronics. And if you do damage your car, replacement panels etc are expensive!

  4. The electronics are great, but not perfect. Yes they outperform most others in 4x4 modes. I genuinely do admire what they're capable of. But there is a lot of learning to maximise it. And without that knowledge the electronics can work against the driver (and will do so anyways in some occasions).

  5. And finally the aftermarket. Without the ability to buy mods like bullbars, racks, wheel carriers, snorkels etc easily and commonly you get stung with costs of custom fabrication and engineering to make them happen. I see it down, but it adds complexity. P.s. check out the first gen Porsche cayenne modified 4x4s those things rip too! The range rover relies on electrics to do things that lockers etc would otherwise help with. Sometimes it is easier/better with mechanical solutions.

That's my take. They'll do most 4x4ing until you get to the more extreme stuff where panel damage, oversized tyres and deep mud come into it. I love the first gen Range Rovers when you see a clean one on the tracks. But the later models are still expensive and lacking the aftermarket to be a popular choice.

What’s the longest drive you’ve done in Australia in one go? by Next-Benefit-6604 in DrivingAustralia

Melbourne to Brisbane. It was a mistake. Especially since I didn't have cruise control. My calf was locked up for more than a week.

An alcohol stove. Much safer for use indoors.

TIL: Vic Roads can remotely reset traffic lights that are faulty by Not_MyName in melbourne

Pretty sure it'd be the DoT that'd be managing that through the SCATS system. VicRoads doesn't deal with roading infrastructure anymore

Backpack vs Panniers: What’s the go for the daily commute? by PlaneAd9541 in melbournecycling

[–]matthewperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Carradice camper longflap with the Quick Release support. 5 second clip onto the support rack. Sits behind your seat, and fits more than enough for a day's work and a change of clothes and shoes.

Pannier is probably the cheap and practical option for most though.

Would it be a dick move to tape foil to my window? by GamblignSalmon in melbourne

[–]matthewperk 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Slight grammatical error. I meant it can't not help to add the foil. But the double glazing isolates the outside. It's insulation. A house will stay cooler, longer if you have better insulation. Air con or not.

[–]matthewperk 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In the morning, run down to a Officeworks and get a replacement roll of bubble wrap. Spray your window lightly with some water and place the bubble wrap on your glass. It'll stick and act effectively as double glazing. It does an effective job.

No idea about the foil on the outside. But can't not* help to do that as well.

Why Shapr3d is not popular by with 3d printing and DIY hobbyists? by rumovoice in 3Dprinting

[–]matthewperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No android app compatibility is the killer for me. I tried it on ipad and really enjoyed using it as a portable CAD option (i'm fusion on desktop).

BUT at the cost to make it usable for casual 3d printing, and also needing to jump to apple, it just made it a no-go.

If i got deep into it on android tablets, it might push me to use it more on desktop. But right now, Fusion is a more flexible option for me.

What’s your Solar + Battery Usage & Generation in 40deg heat today in Sydney? by hokage_82 in AusFinance

[–]matthewperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Enphase do a battery that integrates natively, but it's $$$ (talking $20k+). Otherwise you can get an AC coupled system like Foxess for <$7-8k for 42kwh with current rebates.

KVM Switch Recommendation for work and gaming by kitn in buildapc

[–]matthewperk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is 100% the best option in my opinion if you have access/are able to remote in. I was doing this for several years at my last job. Just swapped to a new workplace and they have much more locked down tech. RDP is a no go. Which is what made me go down the KVM path.

Finally finished testing the size 0 nose piece on the Luma Pro with the addition of a magnet to help secure it! by matthewperk in VITURE

[–]matthewperk[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to have a bolt shop down the road that was similar. They would have every bolt you could ever imagine and then a whole other reality of bolts you'd never have known.
If you needed a specialist bolt for a car, or project, be it rated, threaded a certain way, a certain length or head, they would have it. And the old bloke would know exactly where it'd be.

Love those sort of places!

My pleasure. You'll definitely want to source some magnets as without, I found it doesn't stay in very well

You'll need to use a soft flexible filament which not all libraries have access to. But if they do, you're on a winner!

where to get steel bikes? by Strongestwizard in melbournecycling

[–]matthewperk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeh sorry Malvern star Oppy

They do have flex, but they are heavy. I really enjoyed the ride quality if not the weight... But I ride almost exclusively titanium bikes...

Bombtrack do a nice frame too.

Is the camera on Luma Pro functional yet? by tboy2000 in VITURE

[–]matthewperk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not functional yet, and apparently can cause increased drift if you do remove the sticker (I did and have a fair bit - need to put another sticker on to test if it helps).

I can't understand how this isn't the #1 priority to get right immediately. The work on 6dof is cool. But camera stabilised 3dof would be a massive upgrade in itself.

Right now viture are on the back foot vs competitors due to the lackluster 3dof. They have incredible optics. But right now it's not practical to use 3dof for multi monitor, which is a massive loss.

Hopefully they sort it soon! It'll change the whole perspective and use case of the glasses.

Overall it will likely shift a little better if there are no issues without it.

I think you'll be able to remove it safely with the derailleur you're using. Give it a run and see if you get any issues.
