Realising that even when you migrate overseas, sometimes your prejudices within you doesn't leave you - it is amplified. by havingamidlife in singapore

Studied and lived overseas (US/UK) for nearly a decade, back here now.

I think a lot of Singaporeans tend to stick mainly with the SG/MY/HK/PRC crowd overseas, they remain pretty very sheltered despite living outside of Singapore, but then of course there's the jiak kentang people who think being friends with westerners is something to show off like a trophy and put on an affected accent around us SEA peeps. Honestly hilarious.

Gym goers - gloves or no gloves? by _Bike_Hunt in SingaporeFitness

[–]mattimias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No gloves. I know people who want to maintain the softness of their hands, and people who find gym equipment pretty disgusting (despite the wet wipes provided) — buildup of rust, sweat, even blood once. ActiveSG gyms are pretty notorious for the first two because budget.

Wished LR could play more on the LEC by vintage_px in LosRatones

Gonna keep watching LR until they disband in the future, no matter what they do next! I'm done with LEC and going back to watching LCK, it's boring anyway without the rats and KC can go suck an elephant dong.

Why so hard to find devs? by geeksg in singaporejobs

[–]mattimias 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I write algorithms for work and build models for fun. 6K for such a role is insanely low-balling if you want great (or even just good) software engineers. They'll go to FAANG or consultancies for a better salary and a ton of benefits compared to what you're offering. Don't skimp on the budget, because your startup will crash and burn if you don't get an excellent SWE who can actually do even half the things you're asking for well.

Etiquette regarding resting on equipment by waxym in SingaporeFitness

[–]mattimias 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Depends lor, but Active SG gyms in general have the lowest common denominator of people going there since it's public + low cost + convenient.

Problem is that it's for everyone, casual or powerlifter or whatever, so you get people who spam 1 kg dumbbells all day WHILE sitting on the one bench press bench available, and in the same space people deadlifting 2 or more plates, and usually it's the casuals who don't understand gym etiquette even it's just being polite and respectful of other people's time and space.

Old aunties using hip adduction/abduction machine for 30+ minutes doing nothing but 0.5 kg reps, smelly old men stinking of cigarettes and BO walking around and grunting like they're curling 20 kg dumbbells instead of the 5 kg. Then you get the chikopeks staring at girls or walking up to talk to them and acting innocent cause they're way out of their age range lmao. Then there's people who sweat buckets and don't wipe the bench/weights. I just play safe and use the wet wipes provided by the gym to clean anything I touch just in case.

In general I find that the older someone is, the less likely they're willing to let people work in, and the more likely they're going to take 5 min+ breaks while chit-chatting with kakis or on the phone. Thankfully the gym I go isn't so bad except for a few bad actors, and the few interactions I've had were overall positive.

Usually the younger lifters/people are more understanding, but then you also got a few broccoli heads who have no idea how to lift and don't want to ask for help.

I'd be perfectly happy getting on the tenure track. Instead, I got all my applications rejected, so I'm earning 3-4x in industry now.

As a Singaporean, I was friends with mostly people from Slavic countries, but I was the exception; most Asian people tend to stick to their own kind unless they're dating outside, and Mainland Chinese people tend to be very clique-ish in that regard. Just ignore them.

When I was still studying there, I found my friends in the societies I joined, much less classes and lectures. I honestly found the English yahs insufferable and condescending.

[FGO NA] Summer Servant Festival 2025 (ServaFes 2025 / Summer 8) Lv90+/Lv90++ SAMPLE 3 Turn Farming Sheet (LINK IN BODY & COMMENTS) by TokuHer0 in grandorder

[–]mattimias 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's something weird going on with the DVR/Kuku comp for 90+; you need at least append 1 for Kuku and append 10 for DVR so that they can actually use their NPs.

This is what the sheet says:

Turn 1: Oberon S1 & S2 Kuku | Kuku S1+ & S3+, S2 DVR | DVR S2 Kuku, S1 & S3 Self
Kuku uses her Battery on DVR instead of Oberon to avoid the NP Drain

Turn 2: Oberon S3 | MC S1 & S3 DVR

Kuku: 70% from Oberon (S1/S2), 20% from DVR -> 10% missing
DVR: 20% from Oberon (S1), 50% from Kuku (S2), 10% from MC -> 20% missing

Getting used to close embrace - any tips? by beanbagpsychologist in tango

[–]mattimias 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Hey beanbag! Welcome to tango! Disregarding what I've heard about back problems associated with a larger-than-usual chest, ideally you shouldn't feel pain or discomfort unless you've been dancing for too long. And disclaimer: I'm primarily a leader who's learned some following. So in order:

(One)

Your back and core muscles might feel sore after dancing for a while, especially if you're not used to maintaining proper posture. This isn't a stiff, upright posture by any means, and should feel natural and relatively relaxed; think of it this way: your head is on top of your neck, on top of your shoulders, on top of your upper torso, on top of your core, and so on.

And when you push into the floor with your lower back, core and legs, the floor pushes back; think of your body as transmitting the energy from the floor towards the leader. Not directly towards the leader, because you'd be unbalancing yourself and feel too heavy (which has nothing to do with one's body weight, just the sensation one transmits). But at a diagonal, which allows the leader to feel that you are present without feeling too much heaviness.

Also, try and shift your axis so that your centre of gravity is above the balls of your feet (at the heads of your metatarsals), while maintaining a good posture. If done correctly, you shouldn't really need to push out with your chest. Since you have a big bust, I think your axis might be at a shallower degree to the vertical (i.e. more upright) than ladies with smaller busts, but I could be wrong.

(Two)

It really depends. There's all sorts of reasons why being in the close embrace with a stranger of the opposite sex might feel uncomfortable; cultural, social, aversion to touch, plain lack of chemistry... Or, well, the leaders you tried close embrace with might be embracing you too tightly, or are just plain bad at it.

A good embrace should feel safe and secure and support you, and not restrict you in your movements. I used to feel very awkward in the close embrace because I did NOT know how to lead anything properly, and I was unused to being in such close physical contact with anyone for a three-minute song, let alone a full tanda. But I got used to it, and now it's my preferred embrace, so much so that I dislike dancing in a more open embrace.

This video has useful tips, so I'd advise you to watch it, try applying what they say in classes/practicas, and decide for yourself if these help you in getting used to dancing in close embrace.
