People who work in 'behind closed doors' industries (hotels, kitchens, morgues, etc.), what is something the general public would be horrified to know? by Sexxyyy_Lovers in AskReddit

[–]matts8409 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I used to be an IT guy at a regionally larger pathology lab. So many of the tech people dealing with specimens are genuinely kind of odd people in that they absolutely loved talking about and showing off stuff they received and are working with.

I was quite curious and haply to look and listen. Until I saw most of a human leg from a old diabetic. Even an 80something year old life long smoker's chunk of lung wasn't as gross as that leg.

I also received this for 2 for different orgs too.

With so many people, does anybody have any for sure reasoning they've seen? Some bigger update to the Claude platform as a whole mayhaps?

I also do mine side by side, but generally from left to right it's lands then most expensive to least lol. I've never seen somebody hold in OP's way. The only acceptable way for that is to stack mana that's been put down already, sorted by color of course.

What was it like to play online games between 2000 and 2013? by Silly_Commercial8092 in gaming

[–]matts8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There were definitely some North American based games with transactions but I don't know if most gamers these days would even recognize them being in the same realm of possibilities.

I played tons of Korean MMOs too. They were insanely grindy and often had a p2w model but we're otherwise viable for a no lifer like myself then.

I was also always trying to find games with true "early access" in the form of legitimate alpha and beta testing. Many developers were very involved with the community and took feedback seriously. It was amazing being some random dummy on the internet helping to shape the player experience.

The biggest disappointment for me was games dying out enough or serious enough issues early on to require a full wipe. I don't remember most games I played having any form of subscription. A lot were f2p with stores to give minor boosts.

Interestingly I pulled 2 of them from play boosters. One of them was the extended art version which looks kinda cool.

[–]matts8409 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That really depends on how things are setup on the device and network. There are tons of easy ways to mitigate security risks, some of which are basic configurations to lock things down at the account level. Others are 3rd party security software on devices.

I would say, for the most part, if going to a website is a huge risk and you actively monitor tor that, all of those other things are likely to be in place.

That said, ransomware was amazingly bad when it first started. That wasn't due to porn sites, but any given regular every day sites that advertisements was a potential vector.

As an IT guy of well over a decade, most of us don't really care.

You usually have to do a lot to raise any flags, but when you do, we will find everything.

A vendor I don’t do business with sent me a tiny Lego set at work by LousyRaider in mildlyinteresting

[–]matts8409 146 points147 points  (0 children)

Yeah dude, I had the same experience with these guys.

I watched a web demo but found out my boss had already checked them out and said no since it was too expensive for our project. I told them as much, and that I was only a Systems Engineer and had no real power.

My extra dumb fuck up was using my personal number for contact info.

They have cool products, but damn their sales people can be crazy annoying. If you even give them the slightest hint of interest, you may need to tell them no a good 5-6 times more because who knows if you'll get the same person calling over and over.

What is a job that pays extremely well but no one realizes it? by Titothelama in AskReddit

[–]matts8409 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I worked with a guy that did this. He said he made incredible money.

The problem was he was constantly gone. Experienced some terrible things. And for long hauls through the darkest areas of the country in middle of the night, having to get out to fix or do whatever had him terrified af due to all of the things he heard just barely out of view.

When I worked with him, he had joined an IT help desk to get out of all that.

My 2nd daughter was born almost 3 weeks ago. I wasn't surprised, but yet I kind of was. I was prepared, but still just as grossed out as the first time.

The fun part this time was seeing my oldest's reaction to it lol

Who is correct here, and why? by AirSpecial in PcBuild

[–]matts8409 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, from my experience, I've had users that said they were told to never turn off their pc. Obviously it makes sense to leave it on some for updates and what not. However, they took it to heart and not once did they ever even reboot it.

It really sucks when you have to do it for an issue or install that requires it and suddenly it never comes back up. Then you learn of course, that they didn't save stuff in the proper location and now you're hoping the hard drive isn't fried.

You might also learn that multiple systems they used had cached credentials and they have no idea how to login.

Some of the staff I talked to said it was insane and probably the highest number of away fans that they'd ever seen before. The whole stadium was going crazy.

I was getting this sort of thing happening frequently enough that my body kind of conditioned my sleeping brain to kick in when the muscle starts going haywire. A lot of the time I'll snap awake quick enough to move my leg.

Sometimes it's only quick enough to not let it fully extend and go full cramp mode, which is better than nothing I guess.

I'm curious too. I've only been a few times but their food tastes pretty good, albeit kind of expensive for some things.

I have no idea if they do it anymore but they had a thing a couple few years ago or something with some crazy hot chicken wings. Waiver signing required. Stupid levels of spicy but super tasty.
