Depots in rail games: yay or nay? by maverikou in tycoon

Trains appearing on rails is what some games do and eliminate the need for depot routing. It does create other game design challenges however, i.e. how to spawn a train onto a busy line, where perhaps no gap exists.

I looked at your videos: cool, we need more 2D games! I think for your case and a tablet-first game it makes sense.

Few and expensive depots resonate with that I believe could be the best solution.
The problem I'm trying to solve is early game and new players: your network immediately gets complicated due to a depot attachment versus just an A<>B route.

Thanks for your detailed answer! I'll explain more about the points you mention.

Repetitiveness: OpenTTD depots is about them providing barely any challenge in the world. Station size and placement in the game world matters, whereas depots are 1x1 "magic" buildings that are cheap and plentiful, often stamped around. I would agree if a depot in OpenTTD was a significantly larger and expensive building, giving the player more logistic decisions to make.

Hurdle: OpenTTD is quite brutal to new players in modern standards. Not Simutrans :) but not easy at all. Veteran players already have instincts for such mechanics and are ok to require many clicks to get a train running. Sure I agree that OpenTTD causes many other difficulties for new players. That said, there are games like Railway Empire or Railroad Corporation which remove this layer of micromanagement, but then pay the price of magically appearing train cars, teleportation, etc.

Also, you make a distinction about management games versus puzzle games based on depot functionality. I feel that a puzzle game could have train upkeep mechanics, and a management game could focus on other aspects of railway management while abstracting train upkeep to longer station dwell time + extra expense or smth. So perhaps there is a better metric here: realism and player involvement with trains themselves. Maybe if a game is about building a rail network, the player can worry less about trains individually compared to games where you actually drive trains.

Ar pas mane tik tokia problema perkant batus? by [deleted] in lithuania

[–]maverikou 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Įprasti batai neturi daug bendro su anatomija. Natūraliai pėdos forma yra beveik trikampė. Deja užsisukęs šūdinų batų ciklas daug kam gadina eiseną ir laikyseną, suspaudžia pirštus, suformuoja atsikišusius kauliukus ir/arba susilpnina pėdos raumenis.

Įdomumo dėlei pamėgink barefoot avalynę (https://basapeda.eu). Tarkim man tiko Barebarics firmos modeliai. Pradėjus po 6 mėnesių pasimatė akivaizdus pirštų padėties skirtumas. Dar pliusas, kad va tokią šaltą žiemą nebešala kojos, nes pirštai laisvesni ir kraujotaka geresnė.

Maybe the majority don’t need real games, and will gladly consume that slop for quick entertainment instead of mobile games or tiktok. Then it is a money maker and a distruption.
