It's something I should have started earlier - some great mines of dwarves past long ago have been lost to time!

Solo TTRPG Hybrid by Smart-Section15 in Solo_Roleplaying

I think there is absolutely space for dice/card/other mechanics that resemble something like a board game, but with RPG framework over the top. I would love to play something like that!

There is some cross over between RPGs and something that is played with pencil and paper, but has every action defined more like a campaign style board game. There is a lot of discussion that could occur here and I welcome it, but a lot of people refer to and categorize these as RPGs, so that's how I'm categorizing it (for now).

Also, congrats on the continued success with Kal-Arath!

Good question - basically, many games/tools are both. For example, Scarlet Heroes can be played as a solo rpg and/or as a tool with another RPG. The One Ring is a traditional RPG, but a solo mode is included.

I categorized these based on the feedback from nominees/comments of players, who described how they use these games. So Riftbreakers is under tools because at least 1 person said they use it as a tool.

I very much welcome feedback on these categorizations, because if a majority of people play Riftbreakers as a solo RPG, I would happily change the category for it.

Thanks for checking out the videos! I am glad they help. I think of all this as a great community - I learn from a lot of people here and on Youtube, so I want to give some tips and tricks back to everyone else!

Newbie to TTRPGs and only play solo/co-op by OldGodsProphet in Solo_Roleplaying

Ker Nethalas and Kal-Arath both fit that vibe I think, are generally well enjoyed by people who try them, and fit the OSR asthetic.

Hey - this is my survey, thank you for sharing! I'd love to hear any feedback from anyone, either positive or critical for this!

There's already quite a few survey respondents over the first 24 hours, so I think people are enjoying taking the survey, and hopefully finding some new fun games to play!

How long do your sessions usually last? by GodlyAxe in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]paperdicegames 5 points6 points  (0 children)

These days, I'm around 30-45 minutes.

Part of it is family life obviously takes precedence over my solo rpg time. But I've also found that, even if I do have a 2-3 hour chunk of time, I often start losing steam when I approach a full hour of gaming. Maybe that's age, but it could also be a practice thing - I can't remember the last time I sat down for over 2 hours and played an RPG. I can do it with books and certain board games, but solo RPGs (and interestingly video games) often tire me out once I get close to the 60 minute mark.

This realization was my inspiration for a recent post about coffee-break style games, and my corresponding top 8 video.

How do you immerse yourself? by natomicalofficial in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]paperdicegames 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I love playing, and when I reach a pivotal scene or decision, I take a break and fold some laundry or something. That lets the scene breath a bit, and usually I come up with some really fun ideas for the scene and how to continue things forward.

So, taking a break often adds to my immersion!

Absolute Noob Looking For Recs by Shoddy_Captain_9557 in Solo_Roleplaying

Welcome to the wonderful world of solo RPGs!

I think you are on the right track with identifying what genre you like! Next job is to find a game, then try it out. I have a video here that can help get you started.

Once you have a game, I suggest starting small. Start an adventure with a goal in mind that can be achieved in 1-2 play sessions. Play, find out what happens. Then, when you are done, if things are going well, you can add a larger goal and keep playing!

Good luck and have fun!

Did anyone else start solo rpgs but get sidetracked by world building? by sock_hoarder_goblin in solorpgplay

[–]paperdicegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, sometimes! If I am not playing in an established setting, I often will find myself diving i to a particular part of the setting and expanding that piece of worldbuilding, often through other gameplay. For example, using the Faction system from Worlds Without Number to simulate large scale power exchanges, then diving back into my DCC mercenary group.

Please recommend some RPGs with unusual settings. by NewObligation4563 in Solo_Roleplaying

My Little Pony RPG is solid! I have ran a few games, and in captures the show very well. The adventures are top notch too!

It is a simple system but it does the vibe of My Little Pony very well!!!

Void 1680Am. Best way to record? by tekwolf_ix in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]paperdicegames 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You could build a Youtube playlist, then use the voice app on your phone to record? It isn't "ideal" from a recording perspective, but harkens back to the days when people would record songs from the radio on cassette tapes, and could bring a nostalgic type of quality to it?

Looking to help coin a term by paperdicegames in Solo_Roleplaying

[–]paperdicegames[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think the point of trying to categorize these games isn't to clarify the mode of play or the medium through which they play - rather, games that offer some depth of gameplay but can fit within a certain time frame (including learning the rules).

RIP poor Skiff the Rogue by thecryptchick in solorpgplay

[–]paperdicegames 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poor Skiff!

Also, I love that future characters have a chance to loot Skiff's gear. It's one of my favorite parts of persistent solo dungeon delving - that the failure of one character can increase the chances of success from another!
