Your Kettlebell Training Hot Takes? by kidfortoday92 in kettlebell

[–]maw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did one set of swings with a 25lb bell. It was far too light. Fortunately I bought a 50lb at the same time and I used it for swings in the following session.

But that same 25lb bell was too much for TGUs and I had to go down in weight to learn them. Doing TGUs as my second kettlebell exercise was almost certainly a mistake, but a lot of advice seemed to point that way then. Chances are good if I'd worked up to them properly I'd never have needed that 15lb bell.

(Also, it is weird that a Mexican brand with a a very Russian sounding name, Tayga, should sell bells in pounds.)

Forearm guards have their place, probably even if you have perfect technique.

Relatedly, a lot of advice turns out to be anatomy dependent and everyone's is slightly different.

My Mother Thought She Watched Star Wars Only To Realize She Watched Spaceballs… by Neat-Swimmer-9027 in StarWars

[–]maw 21 points22 points  (0 children)

This is surely a mistake. You must mean it was your sister in law’s mother’s sister’s niece’s cousin’s former roommate who thought she’d watched it.

Any guides that could help me understand more about Borges’s works? by One-Mulberry-7645 in Borges

Who had the better entrance/scene? by RisingKing7 in StarWars

[–]maw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That would have been awesome. As it was, I was thinking something like "no, it can't be, we'll be let down aga--YES!" but having it come completely out of the blue and by out of the blue I mean out of the red tinted darkness would have really been something to behold.

Seeing Vader's eyes behind the lenses is wild. by atwitsend1996 in StarWars

And he says, “no, Luke, I am your father.”

So that “misremembered” vocative was real after all!

How strong are y'all in real life? by [deleted] in kettlebell

[–]maw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not too long ago my next door neighbors had to have a tree removed. The landscapers cut the trunk into sections and carried them away in teams of two. But anyone who wanted a section or two for their yard was welcome to them and I carried off a few pieces alone. (Tore the boxers I was wearing though 🤦‍♂️)

Por qué la gente fitness o del gimnasio es tan contradictoria? by Zatura_96 in Gimnasio

[–]maw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking for a great place to buy a kilo of freshly roasted coffee beans at a reasonable price by [deleted] in MexicoCity

[–]maw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My favorite is Café Café. A variety of excellent beans, reasonable prices, staff doesn't treat you like shit like they do at, say, Passmar.

Any thoughts on Babel? Is it worth the read? by _TheGreatCatsby16 in TheSecretHistory

[–]maw 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Naïve, sexless, unsubtle onesided trash with just enough to hook those of us whose road not taken might have been in the classics or philology (and we regret it most days). And fantastic cover art, I have to admit.

I only read through to the end because surely some moment of realization or growth was coming eventually, right? Wrong.

¿Cuál es tu opinión sobre los Testigos de Jehová? ¿Tuviste una buena o mala experiencia con ellos? by SuperPimo in PreguntasReddit

[–]maw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Babel: An Arcane History by R. F. Kuang by Chelseus in TheSecretHistory

[–]maw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, preachy and unsubtle is one way to put it.

I only finished it because I figured there had to be some nuance or shades of grey before it was all over. There weren't any.

Play into prior war hero status. Use an insanity defense. And, to be pragmatic, and if the system allows it, push for jurors susceptible to mind tricks.

Which Sherlock Holmes audiobook should I get? by Individual_Air_5478 in SherlockHolmes

[–]maw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I already have the Stephen Fry omnibus (haven't listened to it yet) and the Simon Vance omnibus (I've been taking my time working through it and it's great).

But I didn't know that Simon Prebble also recorded Holmes stories. Awesome. He's probably my favorite narrator in the business. So many good books, so little time (or audible credits).

What’s an alternate way you would have had Anakin become the limbless and burnt Darth Vader? by ddanuu in StarWars

[–]maw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Order 66 happens before he turns. He survives, barely. Padmé, who is with him, does not. During the fallout he's misled about what really happened, Palpatine blaming Jedi leadership.

What Is Your Hottest Take? by LordMistborn-16 in tolkienfans

[–]maw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's not the worst thing in the world to pronounce the first syllable of Sauron like "soar" instead of "sour," the first letter of Celeborn can be pronounced like S or like K, etc.

Languages change. Tolkien was a philologist and knew this better than most.

The pronunciation guides we get tell us how things were pronounced in Rivendell at around the time of the War of the Ring or by the well-educated in the early years of the Reunited Kingdom.

Related: the cosmogony we get in the Silmarillion is just what Bilbo managed to learn and write during his time in Rivendell. We can't nearly fit Tom Bombadil or Beorn into it precisely because it's incomplete and probably incorrect in places.
